Then again there's the guy we know with a Neckville who downgrades other people for having a banjo "just like Earl's". No one can tell him different. That's cool, but people have come to me after walking 1/2 mile from the other side of the Darrington Bluegrass Festival grounds, thu all the other jams and camps, to say they heard my banjo over everything and wondering what make of banjo I had. They also compliment the beauty of the sound over all the others they have heard. It's a Style 5 Gibson.
I have run into the same thing you are talking about. I have a 2007 Blackjack, and lots of people tell me how loud and clear it sounds. I have, just like you, had folks walk from the other end of a park or square just to tell me how wnderful my instrument sounded, while stubborn ones denegrate me for not sounding "just like Earl." If you ever have people tell you the latter comment, just remind them of how great your banjo sounds!!
All these banjos sound good because of the person picking them a good picker can make almost any banjo sound good .
