5th November 2011: how can two people NOT like this glorious music?! It beats me! To me, this movement sums up what is so wonderful about Joseph Haydn the man. Whenever I hear this symphony (and so many others by 18th century composers) I feel like standing up and singing along.
What I find so great about this piece is that it's fun, cheerful and you can easily dance to it and at the same time, is kept in an elegant and organised manner! Haydn <3
You don't have to be a homosexual if you don't like women. There could be a thousand reasons why someone doesn't like the opposite gender - or even people in general.
@8Metaphysicist8 Haydn was not gay. He was deeply in love with a young girl whom he wanted to marry, but went she decided to enter a convent, he settled for marrying the woman's sister. Later in life, he confided to a friend that his marriage to this woman - a ditz who had no sympathy for or understanding of his musical interests and profession - had been a great mistake. He regretted the particular woman he married, that's all.
You are definitely confusing Haydn with Händel. Haydn hated his wife, but he couldn't wait for her to die not because he was gay, but due to his desire to marry his mistress, whom he really loved.
There's a good chance Händel was gay, since he showed zero interest in women and had strong connections to various noblemen active in upper-class homosexual circles in Italy.
@miginaustria haha, I know, I know XD I made a mistake; it was Handel that my textbook mentioned. It also said that "some scholars believe" Handel was gay, so I guess there's a few different opinions. The evidence does seem to indicate that he might have been a homosexual (or maybe asexual?) but I really don't think that matters a whole lot when studying his music :)
@RectalR1pper hey rectal jackazz, y don't u do the world a favor n c a psychologist, u need some serious help for seeking attention like this on youtube. i'm concerned about u, don't wanna c u on the news ok
I am reading an interesting book, "The Triumph of Music - the Rise of composers, musicians and their art", from Tim Blanning... Portraits musicians situation almost like slaves under aristhocracy... Haydn suffered a lot in Prince Esterhazy's hands, untill prince's death and finally, freedom and fame in London...
@treandsetter In Haydn's day he was the one who was the popstar in classical music, Mozart not so much. His works were pirated by many printers for the European market.
He understood the difference in his work and Mozart's and perhaps the political changes coming in the world that would make his friend's music so loved by the masses. My humble thoughts about the two masters.
Maybe not grander or greater than Beethoven's,or as searing as Mozart's later symphonies, but as great or greater than both in terms of ideas in continuous contrasts. All three are great. Haydn has verve and rhythmic energy that Mozart picked up on. And LVB learned a lot of orchestration from Haydn.
I love this repeating motif. And this whole symphony- it's so dynamic,it sounds like somebody was in a hurry

@mouadfone Two too many I think. Then again, you always get a few weirdos who listen to Haydn just for the sake of disliking it.

In my music appreciation textbook, it says Haydn didn't really like women? It also says that he might have been a homosexual? o.O
Either way, amazing piece. I'm one of those cliche people who think Beethoven is better though ;)
