As for keeping wages high, it is the responsibility of the employer, not the employee, to not pay under the minimum wage, and those that do pay under it should be kicked from one end of the country to the other.

Then of course we took a break got money for the first time and invited all these "fuckers" over to do the jobs we simply wouldnt do. It essentially took us 2000 years to become some sort of financially independant country and in the space of merely 15 years WE fucked it up. So once again there is a boom in Irish emigration.

My God.
I feel so blessed that I have a great job in California. And I was so tempted to move back home to Dublin in 2005 because I missed my friends and love the new Dublin flavor. As an artist I would be so screwed if I had moved back. Things should get better I hope. The tech bust here in 2001-2004 was miserable but I survived and lost lots of weight from only eating noodles.

We did send the money home. Ever taken a basic junior certificate history class? Money sent home from the Irish diaspora formed a huge proportion of the income for many Irish families. It was also what allowed others to get the money to emigrate.
The Irish were notorious for sending money back to Ireland, and many families wouldn't have survived without it.
