sorry to say but this is auto feeding or auto watering not hydroponics. if you really want to try hydroponics look into deep water culture it's the easiest form to learn.
Nice video and great post! I have a question about the air pump part. Is it like one of those pump systems that one uses in a fish tank that goes from the pump to into the water and it just puts air into the water to makes bubbles? If so, I can quite understand how it can be used to displace water. In any case, where can I buy one of those? A pet store? any help would be appreciated.
@jbvap dude, (or chick, whatever you are) chill, maby you didnt notice but in the vid he blatently states not to ask " how do you start one of these " i was poking fun. the contrsuction is pretty damn simple and i would think even a person with 2 brain cells could muster up the mental capacity to comprehend how it works. now quit being a troll (or go the fuck back under your bridge. )
Make it into an aquaponic (fish) system and the you don't even need to add nutrients. Just have a fish tank as your reservoir and add worms in your growing medium. Once a week you put some compost tea on the leaves and in the medium and voila! Organic culture.
@SHTFSurvivalist You might want to have them help you build it. It will give them a greater appreciation for it. But let's leave the cutting of the bottles to you :)
@anonwoohoo Surface tension from water droplets doesn't allow the air to pass through the tube, so instead the droplet gets pushed up the tube instead.
@megstAA The original conception was for a small apartment with no/limited access to a garden with soil, so the hydroponics route suits. Plus soil attracts weeds and other pests which then compete for the nutrients (since all nutrients are in the soil), with hydroponic farming all the nutrients are soluble and activated with water. Not to mention soil is messy for indoor growing. Hydroponic plants also grow quicker because they lack elaborate root systems that would normally grow in soil.
@VincentsBlog Don't forget the fact that the roots have greater access to oxygen in a hydroponics system, so it allows them to absorb and process nutrients faster. It's one of the reasons NFT hydroponics is popular. Window Farms are actually very similar to that model, but most NFT systems are flat, where Window Farms are vertical.
More plants per square foot = easier matinance and more food in less space :)
you probably already found this out but you should keep all the bottles and the reservoir 100% lightproof or you will get problems with algae and rootrot in some point, green bottles will prevent this little but thick black is best
ARE YOU PEOPLE DUMB??? PLASTIC???? DO YOU FOLKS HAVE ANY CLUE WHAT IS IN THAT PLASTIC??? SO YOU START A PLASTIC BOTTLE GARDEN , SO YOU CAN PERSONALLY REGULATE WHAT CHEMICALS AN FERTILIZERS GO IN TOO YOUR FOOD. OK THATS GOOD BUT WHAT ABOUT ALL THE CANCER CAUSING CHEMICALS THAT LEACH OUT OF THE PLASTIC !!! WATCH THE DOCUMENTARY ..... TAPPED ...... HOPEFULLY SOME OF YOU FOLKS WILL WAKE UP !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Very intersting system, I want to start one to but I would apreciate any information about how to install this kind of systems, I'm new in this way of farming
I'm not sure about the advantage of using an Air pump vs a Water pump. Is it because it is easier to pump water to great heights using an Air pump? Or may because it uses the rising bubble to lift the water, therefore it uses less power.
Nice to see two plants per bottle and looking lush...
In the process of building a system too; however, despite looking at the windowfarm community site still unclear exactly how water is sent up the tubes? I need a non-return valve/needle?
I went into a hyorponics shop here and they didn't know about it, and sold me the idea that using a water pump is better than air pump. That an air pump wouldn't get water that high, but clearly you are doing it.
Awesome job on your window farm! I think yours is the first I have actually seen that has 2 plants in each container. Do you just plant two plants in one net pot? Also how large are the bottles you are using for yours? I really like the design of yours how you have used a main reservoir instead of making the bottom bottles reservoirs for each row. I'd like to learn how to do that. How hard has it been to maintain? Do you get lots of food out of it? Thank you for your time :)

@liquidxskin19 Hydroponics is pretty much anything using water and a soil-less medium so I say this would qualify.

u need to use black tubing and put the reservoir in a dark place so that allege doesn't grow in your nutrient solution

is the airpump so neccessary? couldnt it be done manually with soil in the same structure just as well?
