Kraus was as a character, a true gentleman, always ready to help. His action revealed moderation and equilibrium. And his singing is the same. His father was Austrian.
His artistry is like a good caviar: you need a little experience and developped taste to really appreciate it.
As a vocal technitian, only, perhaps, Lauri Volpi, could know better how his voice work as its best.
He was unique. I had the pleasure of hearing him very, very close on the stage. It was always a lesson of singing.
He is a perfect singer. High notes, legato, everything is outstanding from a technical point of view. It's just that Kraus singing never goes any futher than to my brain. It doesn' touch my heart or my soul. My emotions stay could. Why? I don't know!
Saludos.
Kraus never had a problem with C to F Natural, even in his 70s.
To Hellopairs- Kraus had perfect technique, I am not going to go into physiology here, but if you do not understand these things, please don't say ignorant crap like that his voice sits in a bad place.
His technique is FLAWLESS, and he produces a beautiful sound. Please post a video of your similar vocal problems... It took Kraus his whole life to get to this technique in this vid, and there are no problems there.
As far as I know, Kraus never had a problem with any note, I would say the other way around, he felt more confortable with the high tesitura such as I Puritani, La sonnambula, La Faborita, La fille du regiment etc, these with Wherther were his favorites adding Rigoletto of course.
Saludos
You are right, pay attention to Rockwell's singing, he shouldn't have ever sung opera, he whistles all time..Rockwell the tenor that whistles??, incredible bad technique,
alfredo kraus is the tenor i look up to very much. he just stands out so well, and i hope my voice is as fresh as his at that age. i never get tired of listening to him. what a maestro.luciano pavarotti was great, but alfredo kraus is just something else and his name should be on the lips of everyone, including those that do not know opera, but know luciano pavarotti.
Unfortunately the placing of my comments were not put where I wanted them to be. All of them were intended for "hellopairs" as it calls itself, not for anyone else.
dont worry. Hellopairs seems a proper dick. The last time I saw Kraus was on his 70th birthday concert in the Barbican and he was still at that that age the best tenore di grazia in the world!
Thanks for the vote of confidence - he really does seem quite ill. Yes, Kraus was truly a miracle - a genius. Never was there anyone who could come close to the style, dignity, grace, and intelligence of that man. "A proper dick", I like that :) UK maybe?
Both of his versions of Spirto on youtube are really not the best. Hear him go flat at the end of the recit? Glaring! True its a difficult and slow aria but it just sits in a bad area of his voice. i have the feeling he hates singing this one (how i feel about singing Dala.) Seems i have known many of the same diffuculties he has had.
I'm having a hard time reading this - not literally or course. When I'm finished thinking of my reply, I post it. I can assure you it won't be pleasant.
You're a person that is incapablunderstanding and beyond hope.I happened to have heard Kraus sing this role (when he was not so young anymore - at Carnegie Hall with Verrett) and his 'Spirto gentil' received one of the greatest (and well-deserved) ovations I have ever heard. .
I also heard Kraus live and probably heard him several dozen times in various roles. Since you seem to,"have known many of the same difficulties", perhaps you can tell us all about your 40-year career in the greatest opera houses of the world such as La Scala, the Metropolitan, Teatro Colon, etc.
And also please inform us of your catalogue of studio recordings so we can compare your renditions to those of Maestro Kraus. Usually people such as yourself that criticize have never even heard the singer in question live, only on YouTube or records
The opera world has some incredibly stupid denizens and they are usually the first to shoot off their big mouths. By the way, both the high note in 'Spirto' and also at the very end of FAVORITA when she dies, "E spento" (which without having a score in front of me I believe is a D flat but it may ONLY be a C) Kraus used to turn/rotate his head slowly so that those notes were sent to every corner and angle (and person) of the Hall. And they were!
Basically what this all means, is that you're the piece of horse shit that gets smashed under a shoe. You're the scum that covers a puddle of sewage. In addition to all that, you should have your tongue removed with anaesthetic.
You see, for your comments you should have selected a much earlier recording of this aria. Any criticism on a recording of 65 year old Kraus will look nasty, regardless of your intentions.
I just watched the 1972 video of this same aria. Kraus exhibits only slight changes due to age. He was over 60, yet the voice is fresh, controlled, dynamic, and the diction exemplary. He was truly the PRINCE OF TENORS.
@puregoldenchild Kraus restricted his repetoire to tenor roles that were best for his voice. The Duke, Edgardo (Lucia), Werther, Lord Arturo (I Puritani), Alfredo (Traviata) etc. These (and others) are roles he owned for decades, and I heard him in most of them. No Cavaradossi, Pinkerton, Chenier, etc. He was one of the gods of opera.
When I listen carefully I hear more and more and Kraus never disappoints. He has such dignity, his physical movements even become profound. What dedication!
