Will a, say, 640x480, i.e. 4:3, image from the pandora (where there would be borders) be feasible to display on a 4:3 tv fullscreen? If so, would it depend on the sw side of things?
Looks great. It's a pity that it hasn't HDMI output. Maybe it wouldn't be really useful for most games, but a 720p or even 1080p Linux desktop would be great to see in my 42" Full HD TV.
It's not like people are going to want to walk around carrying a high enough resolution display to use HDMI, so I think a little(ish) box or dock would do.
I am on your side, facts remain that the several vocal people want HDMI, but it isn't feasible as an addon because there is only one high definition video interface, so at minimum you would need a chip to switch the video between an external encoder and the internal screen.
I am fairly certain that an HDMI chip onboard would make the most sense, but for a portable barely larger than a DS it isn't really a good idea, or even possible.
If you want an external dock, why not just a BeagleBoard?
@r3di2watch Now it is possible though. There are devices the size of mp3 players that output through mini HDMI. Hopefully this is something they will consider for Pandora 2.0 or something!
@videogameobsession Can you let me know the name of the comparable SoC that outputs HDMI?
I am sure that it will be considered if there is ever a successor planned for the Pandora.
I know it is possible to output the HDMI, just isn't feasible as the design phase is complete on this device.
It is likely still possible for an end user to place an HDMI encoder and a switch in the LCD ribbon cable of the Pandora. The cost and complexity involved are prohibitive, so end users shouldn't expect it
Is that a mini computer or what?
i googled but i couldnt find anything..

Wow.
That's sweet. Congratulations, it is officially now the future.
Goes to show what's possible when the marketing guys, lawyers and megalomaniac fossil CEOs aren't riding the designers like seaside donkeys.

AWESOME! Well done guys.
I'd promised this is a few YouTube threads, and the TV-Out is by far my favourite feature of the Pandora!
VIRTUAL CONSOLE HERE WE COME!

And if anyone wishes to sue openpandora, i think now is the time we may see it, (certain difficulties with it being unlicensed for emulation?)
But i certainly hope not.
Again, congrats guys!

Thats like suing Microsoft because windows can run emulators.

Except that the chip to enable HDMI is larger than all the other chips combined, and uses too much power.
Get a Beagle-Board for $150 (that is respectable), it comes with the same CPU and has HDMI output.
OR, modify the unit to support the HDMI by making the screen 3 times as thick and including the HDMI chip inside.

The HDMI should be a peripheral.

True.
People who want something bulkier and more expensive with HDMI should probably look at a different device.

Yeah, I need to get one, too. Already looking great.
Would also be nice to have the possibility to deactivate the LCD once output is cloned to s-video out. Would save battery power.

Great to see this project coming along. Keep up the good work guys, I'm sure to order one.
Oh, and... first comment :)
