I think reviewers are being WAY too hard on DNF. I went back and beat Duke 3D again after playing it, and I thought every change was for the better (excluding 2 weapon limit of course ;D). What many seem to think is boring gameplay is really just proper pacing.

@MrLoonytoon1024 Agreed. The point is, the wait really killed peoples' appetite for it. With a new developer Duke can shine again. Forever's failure pretty much lay at the hands of 3D Realms. They tried to make a perfect game, but because they kept scrapping it, it would never get finished. A game always has some flaws, that's inevitable. The fact that Gearbox was able to FINISH DNF was an achievement. And beneath a lot of the flaws, I could see a good game buried in there.

I wanted an archetypal badass who laughs in the face of death, cracks cliche jokes about everything, goes around all guns blazing and feels like the Duke. Instead, in Forever, Duke seems like an aged movie star who runs to cover each time he is shot.

I want the original 80's style badass back!

Oldschool people, who waited for this game so long, didn't had their expectations met. Really. It is understandable that no one did anything for 10 years and then you stashed things together and put DNF on it, but seen as a sequel to duke3d, DNF is really far-less impressive

Things I didn't like about DNF:

1) timeline, after game end. You guys should seriously draw 10 years time as "Bitch'in'!" and the last 3 years as "Let's rock!"

2) 30 mins credits... seriously,.. all pets listed?

3) no linux or mac port. Seriousy, wtf? ut2 engine IS linux and mac compatible, its ut3 when epic renamed itself to epic fail.

4) high linearity, duke3d was far less linear, at least you were not locked out in a corridor

I believe that 2K and Gearbox was too desperate to end the jokes associated with DNF and vaporware that they didn't bother with too many new ideas. My favourite FPS games are the first three Turok games where you have open worlds and like 20 guns you can carry at once and they are all super unrealistic and awesome. Duke Nukem Forever was very much a game that influenced that approach and although I never thought it was as good it is still an amazing game overall and much better than modern FPS games. So I was exited for Forever even if it was a fraction as good as the old Duke.

I love Duke 3d...I still play it till this day! I've been playing it since release day when I was in the 8th Grade (29 years old now) I just take things for what they are regardless....I am just happy to see Duke on the big screen again. I know the game has some crazy faults but fuck it....we got a Duke release and hopefully a REAL good one in the future.....

@legionofdoom2009 Exactly. Cod 4 got so much praise and is even on some lists of best game of all time. And then what? It was dated in a year. The next FPS came out with a fresh coat of paint and was now the "best in the genre" and then another one. Now Cod 4 looks old and its only been out a few years.

Duke 3D is still awesome. Ocarina of time is still one of the best (in my opinion best) games of all time and even today is enjoyable and its over a decade old. Cod 4 is dated already. Its sad.
