I grew up in the north end of Muskoka (very close to Algonquin Park) and you should be more careful around moose. They aren't very friendly at all. I'd rather encounter a bear than a bull moose.
moose plural is still MOOSE not MOOSES! (just sayin), and I live near Algonquin park, you're more apt to see a moose later in the fall, Late september, october, when the bulls are in the rut and looking for a cow to mate. Also, the calves are old enough to be out and about.
It is common to see moose on the side of the highway, but it is advised that you DONT get out of your vehicle and get close to the moose because they're very unpredictable and dangerous animals!
Wow, beautiful. You have to be careful with them. No matter where you hide, they will tear through anything if they feel threatened! Graceful beasts, but we must respect their space.
they are very impressive....I met one at the end of a portage, it crossed the river with so much ease....and when I heard how it brakes the bushes on my side of the river I didn't know what to grab first and run. I threw everything in the canoe and bye byee.....:)
Depends on when and where you go - in July August we always see moose, especially on the Nippising, Madawasca Crow or Petawawa river, anywhere there are big marshy areas. This moose was a surprise because it was on a beach, no where near a marsh. Have a great trip!
re. what did we do to provoke, see second comment above - our friend was sleeping on the beach and sat up very quickly and yelled in surprise, this startled the moose who had been walking on the beach. You can see his sleeping bag in the clip.
Where was it - Mouse Lake in Algonquin, near the northeast end of the park.
Our friend (Chris)slept out on the beach and the moose wandered onto the beach in the early morning, not noticing Chris. When Chris sat up though (yelling HOLY CRAP), the moose seemed startled and came towards him. We weren't sure if the moose was just trotting towards him, or was "bluff" charging, but we all went and hit behind a huge rock just in case... we ran into the woods after this, the moose turned ran the other way, so luckily it was just another bluff!!
I see, Moose are never "fun" animals to deal with. They have horrible eyesight so anything that moves they usually take as a predator. I've had a run in with one before in a canoe. Luckily the Canoe was silent so he must have thought me to be a fast moving log. Very interesting story though! Might have been scary/odd then but think of the stories now.
Sorry, and to add, after he charged, which was thankfully a bluff charge, he turned and ran off in the other direction (through the campsite) and we didn't see him after that. Answered other question below, thanks :)
LOL, i love the ending!!!

@hastalavista yeah, when i went (july of last year) i saw about 6 or 7 mooses.
of course, the males are rarer because they shy away from humans.
we got pretty darn close to a female who was eating reeds in the lake. we were maybe four meters away! pretty amazing

I have been charged by a moose in our campsite in Algonquin, it's definitely a scary moment. Those animals are huge and dangerous!

What exactly did you do to provoke it to come at you? and where did you go after it charged?
