I think what saved his life is that he hit the rock first before his final descent to the ground. He was up so high that, if he hadn't broken his fall, he would have hit the ground harder due to velocity buildup when something is in downward motion.
And it probably would have killed him.
I'm a paramedic, and I've seen people die from a lot less trauma than he had.
DUDE! I can't believe it! Charlottesville is my hometown! I was just watching Rescue 911 and nearly had a heart attack when I heard where it was from! xD
@ZMommaL56 No, I think Allergic reaction at prom is more descriptive of what happens in the segment, unless "Don't Take the Girl" is the official title of the segment.
that kid should have realised his dad couldn't climb up and grab his hand. Oh yeah, and is it just me, or does that kid's voice sound like a middle-aged women's voice? two words: gender-change
@someguyonthiswebsite i think he didn't helped because he thought his dad would have made it to the top. There's a piece in part 1 where they said "he (his dad) climbed it before & he has been climbing for 10 years.
I'd hate to see what the kid would have done if his dad had kept trying to get up anyway. People with obvious head trauma don't always get why they're supposed to lie still and won't always do so.
It happened to us about 2 months ago. A guy who'd been hit by a car going less than 25 mph, but whose head hit the car's windshield and bounced him off it onto the road, kept trying to get up.
We had to get the cops to assist us, b/c we couldn't stabilize him while he was doing that.
I like helping people at calls like this better than the one we had last night.
The woman was telling big bold lies about what was happening, b/c she didn't want to get her husband in trouble; a guy who, incidentally, had beat her so bad she needed ambulance transport.
Trying to work on this patient was maddening, b/c she kept telling stories contrary to the method of injury. I kept telling the cop she was lying, and he kept trying to get her to tell the truth. But she never did.
Rule 1 of climbing: Always make sure you have a way back down.
On a lighter fact, for having not climbed in 10 years he did pretty damn well! Of course I'll bet he was irritated with himself when he realized there was a TRAIL!
Isn't it true now that after September 11 2001 that all communities everywhere in the US must have 911 set up? That's at least what one of my firefighter friends told me.
as a ff/medic in charlottesville, any sort of "technical" rescue automatically gets an engine company as well as the closest truck company, along with a heavy rescue squad, medic unit and ems supervisor. the truck company is used in case of rope rescue ops

Thank you allgood2000 for uploading this episode. When one of the boys saw this, he just screamed at the top of his lungs. If I saw anyone that did that, I'd scream too.
In my sister's emergency, all my Basic First Aid training was completely useless.
I'd just finished the course the day it happened, and there wasn't one damn thing I could do. They hadn't covered, in Basic First Aid for 8th graders', what to do when someone vomits a sink full of blood.
I decided to become an EMT so I'd never have to stand by in helpless terror if something like that happened again.
I also like the way the EMTs calmed us while paramedics worked to stabilize my sister.
same happened with me somewhat. my friend had a seizure and all i could do was stand there and wait for 911, thats why i am a lifeguard now and when im older become an ER doctor
Thank-you so much for this eposide to post this on your page I really liked it. I wish this show is back on again I hope you are doing well Quadracer687 (Laura)
So I think it was kind of stupid that they went to climb the cliff without any safetey equiptment. and allgood2000 I really enjoy watching these videos, thanks so much for posting them :)
The cliff fall in the first part looks so real that you barely remember it's a reenactment. They sure did a really good job recreating the "accidents" on this show. I mean, even the most of the acting is good, especially from the kids. When I watched this show as a kid, I didn't know about acting and reenactments back then. Now, I'm flabbergasted at how well they were able to recreate the incidents.

Oh my God. That doctor must be a genius. He looks like he's in his 20's. The youngest doctors I see are at least in their low 30's.
Dr. B. was 32 and still a resident, b/c he had to also do a post doc, whatever that is.
He's funny. He's terrified of bugs.

Hey allgood I was wondering if you could change the episode 616 allergic reaction at prom to the name of the song in it which is DON'T TAKE THE GIRL.

Well kids, what did we learn about free climbing without equipment? Don't do it. Kudos to the kid who told him to stay down and not get up.

Wow. Our captain hardly EVER goes on runs with us. Our Battalion Chief goes, but the Fire Captain usually only goes when a fire is involved.
I've only seen the captain go on three runs, but I'm not always there.
Going on runs with Captain B. makes me a tad nervous. The same way I feel when I have to perform procedures in front of certain doctors.

Didn't they use MAST then? I wonder why they didn't put MAST on him?
They don't have MAST now, tho I haven't figured out exactly why that is. Not using it anymore hasn't stopped us from still having one in our supplies.
Lately they've been going wild with all the changes they've introduced into EMS.

My guess as to why Barry fell was because it was 10 yrs. since he climbed, and so he would have been rusty.
Maybe he wanted to show his kids that he was a brave and courageous dad, but that bravery almost cost him his life.
happy7117 2 years ago
When Barrie falls in Part 1, his scream sounds fake. Was a dubbed sound effect used for his scream?? That's my guess.
Another observation:
When Barrie falls, it looks like his body hits a hidden trampoline by the way his body bounces off the rock.
happy7117 2 years ago
I think so. I'm pretty sure I've heard that scream on other shows/movies.

why send and aerial ladder truck since there's no high rise fire in this type of situation?
gregorkrause 2 years ago
They probably thought they were going to need it when lifting him to the top of the ravine.
But some departments bring the truck closest to a priority 1 trauma.
It's probably the first reason.
