We went through these same tunnels from Meanwood baths as nine year old kids all the way to the end at the aire without protection and without lights in the late 60s. It was pitch and to our horrer we could not get out the other end so had to go all the way back. When i think back it was the most stupid and dangerous thing we ever did. People never believed we did it but they can't take away the memory of what we did.
great to see phil, we used to play in these places when we were kids & explore them, we went from the beck at fearnvilles down the tunnels all the way to roundhay park, also the meanwood beck aswell, it brings back memories, time to post this on facebook so all the old crew can see from the late 70's early 80's.....

I believe there is an extensive tunnel network under parts of Liverpool also; built by a millionaire in the late 1800's-not to mention the Paris underground caverns..i like it
Spoke to you on your myspace site. I do think your adventures are very informative and good. I loved your myspace page and found some wonderfull photos and stories. Hope you get to do much more.
As a kid in 1960's Gledhow, it was the height of daring to go down Little Switzerland to Gledhow Valley Road and then run along the tunnel that takes the stream from right to left along under that road. Quite long and phrase "light at end of tunnel" valid.
Music is too loud and irritating - had you got loud music blarring when you went through the tunnel - why not??!! Turn it off or at least turn it down - it spoils it
That brings back memories, I played down those tunnels as a kid. Spent the first part of my life in Roscoe road until it was pulled down. Then I moved up to the Gipton estate (when it was still a decent area)
Bradford ("Broad Ford") has got same but better. Coming in down the back of the Alhambra Theatre the Beck ran into an old tunnel under the low city centre.
In '93/'94 behind Sunbridge road whilst prepping for the new Aldermanbury, they dug up the old (very old) tunnel and put a concrete one in.
This takes the water from that point down under the town through to Forster Square / canal road area.
Also a Bradford Canal which linked up to Leeds/L'pool at Shipley.
Wow! I'm amazed. I've lived here and around my whole life and thought i'd seen most of it. How wrong could I be. Nothing like secret tunnels to keep a person fascinated. Cheers
i wouldnt do this unless all were armed with some sort of weapon and each team member was able to fight hand to hand if needed...dont know what or who you may encounter...friend of mine "hobo"ed with a friend and ran across some "unfriendly" characters, until they was convinced that it be to their best intrest to just walk away, which they did...also you dont know what type of toxic sh1t could have been dump down there, stay on the train tracks, safer and cleaner !
It's a shame that there isn't places like that here in Finland :(. I would like to visit the UK or Australia just for the sewers and other places like that.
Thanks apple... Actually it's a well known urb ex run... there's more people go down there than you'd imagine..it even has it's own name. THE MASTICATOR.
Yes you could walk it from Adel but it might be a fight through the undergrowth.. The walkable culvert starts at Buslingthorpe lane... Yes the Roscoe setion is the Gledhow beck, we followed it in half way but it was a very small boring section.
my mate used to have a garage off meanwood road, penraevon avenue. I used to look over the back at the beck, i once suggested following it but no one was up for it. Could you go all the way from adel woods to the river aire? Also the branch behind the roscoe, does this go towards gledhow valley woods? Great vid anyway!
This is brilliant. I've wanted to go through the beck tunnels myself for a long time now, I live in the area and have always been interested in this stuff. Great work, watching ths is the next bext thing to being in there.
takes me back to my teenage years in Hemel Hempstead, where a similar river ran underground from Northridge to Boxmoor. The tunnels were of about 2ft radius, but every few hundred metres there was a concrete "room", usually with manhole access to the world above.
3 friends and i hacksawed a grill at the bottom end of the tunnel by the canal and used to travel possibly miles up the narrow pipe using skateboards & candles.
thanks for the fast reply phil i have just tried again and when it gets to 54 seconds and the title THE FIRST TUNNEL comes on it ends must be a problem at my end anyway glad to see youve made a video i have been interested in your pictures for a while now keep up the good work
Fascinating! Well done!
