Because AIG holds over $40 Trillion dollars in Credit Default Swaps (securitized insurance on mortgage defaults) their collapse and the collapse of other similarly affected financial institutions would have lead to world wide financial meltdown-which would have precipitated the Second Great Depression.

No he did not. Bush, Obama, both branches of Congress and both political parties created TARP (Troubled Asset Relief Program) to bailout major financial institutions and prevent their collapse. Because AIG holds over $40 Trillion dollars in Credit Default Swaps (securitized insurance on mortgage defaults) their collapse and the collapse of other similarly affected financial institutions would have lead to world wide financial meltdown-which would have precipitated the Second Great Depression.

Part of the reason that we're in this mess is the risky business practices created by the moral hazard of previous government bailouts. The "too big to fail" policy in the past has provided an insurance policy to large corporations who as a result act in ways much riskier than they otherwise would have.

People who oppose TARP and the Stimulus make think of people in a sinking lifeboat. Some idiots (AIG, sub-prime lenders, etc.) on the lifeboat have created a large hole in the boat, water is rushing in faster than AIG can bail and therefore the boat is sinking. AIG asks for help (which they dont deserve) bailing and TARP opponents say: hey, we did not put the hole in the boat, you did, you bail the water.

No, we are not all in the same boat, and the people given money DIDN'T use it to buy the "troubled assets" they were supposed to. So clearly they didn't need to be given money to solve the problem. By the way the problem was created by government in the first place. The fact that nobody knows where the hell the money went tends to show that it went nowhere the government is proud of. The idea that it helped is psychic economics, based on nothing but vibrations at a seance for the economy.

Based on their stated beliefs, Republican/Conservatives would advance the idea that such an institution has the right (as a private institution) to select for prizes who they chose and for whatever reason. The two reasons the judge mentioned for choosing Obama don't make any sense to me. A leader of a country with probably the largest number of nuclear weapons is praised for his effort to prevent other countries from using nuclear technology (even for electricity). A person who says that we need to make peace is praised even though no actual peace/results are achieved. Nobel prize is sucks! it has been given to the wrong people including racist scientists

This just shows us who Obama is. It says something about you when Quadaffi, Ahmadenijad, and Chavez sing your praises at the U.N. When the murderous terrorist supporting dictator of Libya says that he would like to see Obama be the American President forever, that says something very negative about Obama. Siasa, Koffi Annan together with the UN won the Nobel peace prize 2001. Then I was the loudest critic because I felt he failed first in Rwanda where the UN just watched as genocide went out of control, then that was the year of 9/11 and George Bush ignored the inept and powerless UN and did what he damn felt like. His work in Kenya I feel is as a result of his failures in Rwanda when he was the secretary general. I must say Koffi is much better and more of use now than when he was in the UN.

I've come to like Obama but I disagree with him getting the Nobel Peace Price, considering he is leading all NATO nations into expanding the war in Afghanistan and Pakistan.
No war is peaceful, and Obama shouldn't be exempt from this just because he is popular and uses the word peace.
I think that Morgan Tsvangirai and others were more desrving of the award at this moment in time.

Scary how he can deny something and then in the same moment calls out for its acceptance. Moreover, its interesting that he mentioned Iran (indirectly) in this speech - is that a marker for war? Justifying that it is perhaps cloaked peace?
