@bluecobalt27 & britainfan4lyf, no offense, but I don't really see the points you're making. Russell makes Hollywood movies these days, what bigger sign is there that you've been accepted by the American audience?
Not so. The Delaware valley was founded by the Swedes/Finns, New York by the Dutch, Mississippi valley by the French. Even back when the elite were largely English "blue-blood", a major portion of white Americans were of German extraction. You may have even heard that German was flouted as an official language; that explains why there is a 'Germantown' in every Eastern state.
The first census in 1790 had English Americans at 47.5% - 2009 at 9%.
@MattyJames25 Didn't the British fight the Dutch out of New York? It was called "New Holland" when the Dutch discovered it, the British named it "New York" after York in England.
@RizoSaysAha "Didn't the British fight the Dutch out of New York? It was called "New Holland" when the Dutch discovered it, the British named it "New York" after York in England."
Yes, true. The Dutch still founded it though, and peopled it- many neighborhoods today still have Dutch names like the Brooklyn, Harlem, Stuyvesant, Coney Island etc.
Those claiming English origin have dropped dramatically over the past 30 years (as in total numbers not just percentages) but the surnames tell a different story (even allowing for Anglicization). There are other factors too - the number of people claiming 'American' ancestry, the tendency to define yourself by the ethnic ancestor instead of the English (or British) ones etc.
@quarkwrok Where your 'analysis' is most flawed is not just in the underestimation of Anglicized last names (Johnson for example, long the most common last name owes its popularity to the Swedish/German Johansson and its other Nordic derivatives, not the English name), but in the fact that black Americans all have English last names as a result of their English masters. Furthermore, a lot of Americans simply don't know their ancestry for lack of records. We say 'white people' because of this.
@MattyJames25 I took into account generic Germanic names like Adamson, Smith, often angicized. The adoption of the German language IN PENNSYLVANIA ONLY was at a time when over a third of the white population was of German origin and that was tunusually high. English and Lowland Scots/Scots-Irish account for a good 2/3rds of northern European origin (catholics, Greek orthodox, non-Christian etc were a small minority 100 years ago) and English is not considered an inherited ethnicity. Go figure.
@quarkwrok Well in 1790, during the first census, English was an ethnicity. The total figure was 47.5%. And "American" wasn't a category back then.
As for Germans, they were the largest immigrant group between 1840-1880; over 1million Swedes alone came in the mid-1800s (not to mention other Nordic countries, see Mid-West); Poles have always had a strong presence & E. Europeans; Italians came in the late 1800s; northern blacks etc. Point is that it has always been far less Anglo-Saxon than Oz.
@MattyJames25 No perceived not official ethnicity, refferencing American is to show the pointlessness of current perceived ancestry . British Isles was still the majority in 1790 and assimilation to it not the minority German. Claimed Scandinavia and Polish ancestry has also fallen, but not German for some reason. Italian, Latino, Arab, Asian, Indian, African have increased at the expense of northern/eastern European but British Isles immigration was large and continuous.
Facepalm. Immigration from the UK hasn't made the top ten countries of origin since the 1800s. English Americans constitute 9% of the US in 2009. People who self identify as 'American' are only 5.9% - say all those white people were English, it makes the total only 14.9%
The UK remains to this day Australia's largest source of immigrants and constitute well over 85% of the country.
Australia is far more Anglo-Saxon than United States. Game over, goodbye.
@quarkwrok As well as twisting stats and repeating factoid about Australia being more Anglo-Saxon (sic) when no one disagreed you still fail to understand the point about perceived origins. eg English 1980 49m 2000 24m American 1990 12m 2000 20m! So all-Americans whatever that is are having 12-child families and English-origin folk are not having kids? Don't think so. Scotts/Scots-Irish haven't dropped and as for Welsh don't even go there - up and down like a whores panties. Hmmm.
Respond to this video... The always rising 7.3% American in 2000 is quite large compared to most other groups so don't belittle it, even if it only appeared in 1990. Presumably from outer space. All this BS on top of negative posting on some video sad or what. What IS your agenda?
@MattyJames25 UK immigration ALWAYS top 10 1900-1990, then there's Irish and UK-born via Canada (especially pre 1960's). All far outstrips German. *slow sideways nod*
Russell is a ledge.... I'd love to see Russell interviewing Chopper Read. I reckon they'd get on well, but I also think there'd be a lingering danger of Chopper having to get the bolt cutters out.

@MattyJames25 actually the census in 1790 was 74.3% british ancestry and 60.1% english. not to mention all the founding fathers were either english or scottish
@jed371 "actually the census in 1790 was 74.3% british ancestry and 60.1% english. not to mention all the founding fathers were either english or scottish"
I'll leave it to you to examine the census itself, but say I grant you that the colonies were 60% English (which I don't), it still demolishes the comparison between Anglo-Saxon homogeneity in Australia up until the 1970s versus the more diluted ethnicity of the early United States.
@MattyJames25 where are you getting your figures from? i was being generous with 60 percent, it was as high as 80% if you look at some sources. Either way, australia has just as much a varried genetic make up as the united states
@jed371 where are you getting your figures from? i was being generous with 60 percent, it was as high as 80% if you look at some sources. Either way, australia has just as much a varried genetic make up as the united states"
1. From the National Committee for Research on the 1980 Census: it references the actual 1790 census.
2. Today people of English extraction in the US is at 9%. There is no comparison.
You can find all this and more at census.gov, if you are really that interested.
And I feel an equal sorrow for you and in you jon, for the greatest pain in life is usually caused by the unnatural insertion of one's head up one's arse.

1. From the National Committee for Research on the 1980 Census: it references the actual 1790 census.
2. Today people of English extraction in the US is at 9%. There is no comparison.
You can find all this and more at census.gov, if you are really that interested.

@MattyJames25 i know today its only 9%. im talking about 1790

And I feel an equal sorrow for you and in you jon, for the greatest pain in life is usually caused by the unnatural insertion of one's head up one's arse.
