You can either not save your game, and it will return you to right before you fight the final boss (so you are allowed to roam free and get everything), or you can convert your save into Hero mode, which will start you off at the beginning again. In Hero mode, there are no hearts dropped by enemies or in pots/bushes (you need potions and fairies), enemies deal twice as much damage, the dialogue is a bit different (some secrets are revealed), and more.

@MrSpannytheRandom You mean, if he falls through the clouds? I can't remember exactly, but I think he just gets returned to the last solid ground he was on. As for falling onto the surface from the sky, your sailcloth always opens automatically.
