yes . well written i must say... SOme may not understand what its like to leave the best years of your life with the best and closest peple you ever knew and have that chapter of that story finish ..though there would be a new chaper that would be at a distance & more solitude.
But in Alex's perspective hes carrying on that chapter , from the dream he kept in him through those former years.
standing at a cross road looking back to home and memories looking forward to dreams and goals ahead ...its so hard at that moment ..letting go and going on.
time carries us all individually like wings on the wind to somewhere, that somewhere where destiny blows, of which that first step forward must we take, out of the nest into the air, never being the same again, glorious and tragic at the same time... but ready in lessons and knowledge ..now parents love and teach them well Towards Jesus !
I understand both sides, but when parents say they have no value if their children do not show sorrow for leaving home, I think that is a little skewed and unfair. Children are meant to eventually have their own lives...and that is not wrong. Alex wasn't leaving the family...that is where parents try to put the "guilt trip" on their children. He was starting a new part of his life that I am sure Alex would have allowed his mother to be part of if she would have acted happier about it.
I love this episode...and hate it a little :( This is probably the only episode in Family Ties that makes me really wanna weep and think about how it's gonna be like if I leave the house. All the good times that the family had together was amazing! This is one of the funniest tv shows out there, and the final episode has drama and really good acting in it. It really breaks my heart to see Alex leaving. Everybody in the show was great! This really is making me tear up ;'-c Thanks for posting!
His dream was coming true. Why shouldn't he have celebrated? He wasn't leaving the family, he was just leaving their house. I don't think he was flaunting anything, I just thought he was proud and happy of what he accomplished, which he should have been.
The problem was- the family was adjusting to him living in their house to living far away.. When he should have been spending the little bit of time with his family that he had left before he left, he was too "busy" getting ready to rush out the door. His eagerness to throw away everything his parents were offering was what hurt his mom.. Especially because he started acting like he didn't need them at all anymore.
@elawton1980 I think it was the way he was about it. He just show that he is happy about leaving - never mention that he is sad to leave the family behind :-)
@elawton1980 The scene with Meredith and Michael J. pretty much summed up the entire series. It illustrated the bond this family had with each other, the "Family Ties" if you will. Elyse's difficulty with Alex leaving and reveling in his success wasn't because she was jealous or envious of Alex. Elyse was proud of him but had a hard time dealing with the fact that her first child was leaving her, I wouldn't expect anything less from her character. Bravo to Meredith for playing her brilliantly.
How can he not see how that is extremly hard on her..shes his mother!! It brakes your heart to see your child go away..and hes being really nasty actully..even thought I looove Micheal J. Fox :P
That last scene with Meredith and Michael gets me every time...Amazing actors, you can tell they were really drawing that emotion from their real-life friendship.
Leaving the family? No. Just because one moves away doesn't mean they are leaving the family. I didn't leave my family when I moved 1500 miles away. I moved back six years later.
Really dramatic and sad, series finale. Michael J Fox was just so brilliant as Alex P. Keaton. Great Show, with real characters and family you could relate to.
This episode has stayed with me my whole life...it is how I felt about leaving my family in Sydney to move to London especially as m brother and sister were so youn when I first left.

It's amazing both Michael & Meredith look like my brother....amazingly it's a coincidence. They both must look like each other.

It's the "leaving the nest" syndrome that all mothers feel when their kids are ready to leave home.

But even if I didn't move back, that would have had NO bearing on whether I left the "family" or not. I was still very much family with my family.

maybe. frankly in my opinion though, for about the last 3 years of it's run there was an equal balance of comedy and serious drama
