I'm seriously thinking of buying the sony camcorder.
I got one problem, tough. I'm a musician, and I heard some of these cameras have a automatic volume function (to avoid volume distortion) that cannot be disabled.
In my case, I need to be able to connect an external audio source (mixer or mic) and its important that i can control the volume manually.
in this camera, can I switch off this auto-volume control?
dustytimes nailed it. You should have shot at the same time. The suspicion is that TM700 shot is made significantly later, and this is why shop signs are on and everything looks darker.
clearly there were adjustments that could have been made to TM700 for brighter exposure.... Not an even comparison. I own a TM700 and you can get more light out of night time city shots like this.
@djandreaa I'm not saying the cx550 can't do better. I'm not familiar with that camera. I'm simply saying that my TM700 can generally get a more exposed shot than that without all the artifacts you speak of. I use mine pretty often.
Hello I am from Argentina, I am in two minds between these two cameras, could you please help me decide for one? Thanks!!! I will really appreciate your comment.
djandreaa, what about the two image seems like you can see with your eyes? Like the panasonic image, or the sony image? does the sony amplifie lot the picture light? thank you.
If you wanted a TRUE comparison, you should have shot this scene at the same moment. I had noticed that the store lights were OFF in the first sample and ON on the second. Also the weather conditions seems a bit different too.
I think the Panasonic looks better and is better.. The sony does have more light but the picture looks very flat.. No depth of field... The panasonic produces better colors and just has a better feel overall...
Thanks FranBro. I wound up getting the TM700 since it was about $300 less and it has IMO a better lens range overall. The video quality should be about the same in both units. Don't know about reliability though on the two.
The color reproduction on the Panasonic looks much more realistic if you ask me. I'm trying to decide between these 2 cams. Anyone know which is better?
I assume the second half was the TM700. You'll also notice that the Sony doesn't have a wind cut feature in a $1000 camcorder. Ridiculous.............the Panasonic does. I thought that the Panasonic had truer colors.
I also read in Sony's specs that the CX550software doesn't support Windows 7 64 bit OS. Even the 110 doesn't. I wonder if you can still import though to different editing software.
i have the 550 and a windows 7 64 bit computer and i simply plug the 550 in via usb and drag the files from camera to computer. no problems at all. and then i can put the files right in vegas.
Panasonic has awesome low light recording features. First you need to set the scene mode for night and then set the shutter speed to as slow as possible to allow the maximum light to the sensors.
I want this camera, but I am afraid that I will not be able to edit it for youtube. My wife records herself singing with our current camera, at the same times as recording her voice with a $800 mic that is hooked to protools (Music recording and editting software). She then puts the video (picture only) and the sound file from protools together so that we can have a good video plus great sound. Do you record in 60p and if yes, what software do you use to edit it?
First of all, according to a review on someones video it states that the cx 550 does NOT have a gain control, AKA you gotta keep it on auto and it keeps variating in lighting, and decides for itself how much to increase. Second I believe this user posted another video with the TM700 of the same location but it had better tighting, he may have figured out the features. The TM700 is exceptional, as far as fan noise, You would have to literally be pumping audio just to hear it, I love the audio
I think the Sony CX550 outperforms the Panasonic TM700 in this situation. 3 chips means less room to absorb light, hence bad low light performance. This has always been a problem ever since Panasonic first released it's first 3CCD camera, the standard definition NV-MX500, which I bought back in 2003. Sony finally offers recording at 24mbps with the CX550 at the highest resolution. The CX550 only records in 1080 interlaced, not progressive :(
@maitp 2Sensors means better low light performance!!!!! Think about it, if you have 3 chips, that equals more surface area than only one cmos chip. Plus, the light gets filtered better as it gets split in to its individual parts.
Thats why panasonic use 3mos, because it provides better low light performance
@Daredish Total sensor area depends on how big the one chip vs the 3 MOS are. The Pana. has something like 1/4" sensors; I think the Sony has 1/3" single one. So in this case, yes, slightly larger surface area for Pana.
One more question , does TM700 record 60p with HA (17mbps) or it must be 60 with 28mbps ? ....my 4 years old HP with AMD 2.8 ghz dual core 3gig memory windows OS 32 bit computer seem can't handle avchd (m2ts) , how powerful your computer is able to render this type of file?.....i got vegas pro 9....what do you think ? can i able to edit ....making a movie with vegas pro 9?....thank you again... i am really appreciated .
Thank you for taking time reply ,i am a huge fan of sony camcorder , my brother just bought a cx550 and it looks really great when play directly from camcorder to tv(42" plasma), the color look fantastic ....but , he advice me to look twice on panasonic tm700...=
cx 550 has more light in low lux than tm700? how do you see thing in real eyes...which one look realistic ? i assummed you like panasonic more than sony!
@djandreaa Now, it torn me between cx550 with 64ghz platbed memory built in + plus it can export directly to portable hard drive with no need a computer! .......And Tm700 with 60p ....3mos but only 32 ghz flatbed memory built in + can't export directly to hard drive without computer ? Aaaaaa .....why???????
how do you compare these two camcorder? which one look realistic? i mean ...it looks like sony look more like in low lux? or panasonic look more realistic color ?
