  • the bass sounds like tuba

  • beautiful song, so mellow

  • stupenda

  • This songs reminds me so much of Layne Stayley....RIP, Layne.

  • Has anyone heard this acoustic on Live at Benaroya hall Cd 1...SOAMAZING...Dumbass critics gave Benaroya hall a 2 out of 5 F-ck that!!! PEARL JAM Baby!!

  • youtube is so fucking gay, i wish there was another video website......

  • badmotorfinger t shirt nice =) great song.

  • Is there a haprsichord in there? Or what is that haunting twang? So simple, yet effective. Pure.

  • If you mean that deep sound in the background, that would be an orchestra contrabass, if I'm not mistaken.

  • Yes it is :)

  • It san be done with a bass guitar alone, I believe :)

  • @rokubenny2005

I don't hear anything like that... the only thing with a similar timbre is the prominently strummed acoustic guitar, but surely you don't mean that.

No instruments out of the ordinary here, methinks.

  • way in the background, very deep...like a horn almost.

  • haunting. touches the heart strings. Resounds upon the walls of my heart, I think the theme of "house but not home", as stated by Lexo is definately plausable. Thanks for the excerpt, Grrrrunge.

  • And for everyone that wants to learn more about Kurt and his life, I recommend the biography by Charles Cross "Heavier Than Heaven" :)

  • @Grrrrunge that's a great book

  • Ok...I wanted to clear things up to you all.Ament wrote this song about his childhood.

"It's a little bit reflecting on where I came from...I grew up in really rural area in Northern Montana, and ["Nothing As It Seems" is] I think until two or three years ago, I looked back at my childhood as being a fairly utopian situation where I had the freedom to ride my bike around town when I was five years old, and my parents didn't have to worry about anybody taking me and killing me or whatever.

  • In the last couple of years...there have been some things that have kind of allowed some darker things to come to the surface of my childhood, seeing things that I had kind of selectively forgotten for my own mental health or whatever.

  • I had just seen Affliction and I had just read Nine Below Zero by this guy, Kevin Canty, all very kind of rural things that unearthed a lot of stuff. ["Nothing As It Seems"] is just kind of what came out. I'm just now starting to actually really analyze what I was talking about...because I still don't really have a grip on that"

  • Quoting Jeff...Found on Wikipedia

  • No, this song is not about Kurt, It´s true Jeff, the writter, don´t know what about talk this song either. I think it´s about find a place, "home" not like a house, "home" like a family. A place in the world. "A whisper through a megaphone" Some times one person can be surrounded by people and feeling alone. So all of need someone to love, a mother or sister, brother, friend, lover. Some one else can be our home.

  • Great Song. Pearl Jam's the greatest!

  • That guitar is so heartbreaking... and the lyrics... the emotion in this song is palpable.

And Kurt who. I think your thinking Metallica.

  • great, great song

  • Love the mood created by the guitar...Brilliant!

  • Fantastic dark cords for the mood of this song. The guy in a genius.

  • Everybody shut up, who cares what it means. That's for every individual to decide for themself. Or you could just listen to it and not think.

  • man calm yo ass wat the hell u talkin about

  • lol, sorry, i was havin a bad day. it happens.

  • I actually kinda agree with you dude. it's up to the individual what it means, or maybe its up to the individual to have it mean nothing and just that it pleases their ears... good post... maybe no the shut up part, that was a bit harsh, but hey everyone has bad days.

  • RIP Kurt..

  • wt?¿?

  • No; the song is about Jeff living in Montana.

Besides - it was written and released like 6 years after Nirvana was all over.

  • the fact that it was written after kurts death only comproves the theory

  • what theory?

im die hard pearl jam fan

what do u thnk song is about

  • read other comments before u talk

  • i asked what theory u had

    its not bout kurt cobain

although for some reason everyone seems to think pearl jam only writes bout them - this song was 6 years after his death and ament sed even he didnt fully kno what the song was about and he wrote it

  • right...every song writen after kurt cobain's death MUST be about him, cause he died and these people start writing songs??very suspicious

  • Eddie Vedder has the most amazing voice.

  • couldnt agree with u more

  • nice song, the best of the pearl jam,so fucking bass and acoustic guitar,I LOVED IT

  • I love this song so much! I heard it the first time today... and I fell in love... this great voice.. oh my god.. it´s so beautiful!

  • Binaural is relatively underrated as Pearl Jam albums go

  • one of the best songs ever, more people should hear it

  • nice, not only first poster but first one to say heck yea! i love this song
