not sure if you can do it midway through a game but you are given the option at the start to switch em off, though I think they add a little more interest. Its actually a fairly good tactic to force your foes recourses by sending pirates after them :p
*sighs* Good. I remember when I first played this game that the pirates proved to be much more of an enemy than the actual computer oponent. God, why do they have to be so damn good?
Probably because they don't have the kind of caps that an AI opponent would have. Pirates don't have to worry about resources and spawn with more ships then anybody would have until late game on a small map not to mention more Gauss platforms then possible surrounding their base. It makes it quite hard to eliminate them from a game which is why so many online games make them inactive.
Yeah. It's really anoying when you're attacking the pirate base, and after the platforms/fleet has been wiped out, odds are you're hurting a bit, then to have another fleet spontaniously spawn while you're bombing the base, ugh. Ah well, it does make things a bit more exciting, though it's wierd that the "Pirates" were treated more as mercenaries than actual pirates.
I generally until late in the game before I drop a giant cap fleet on a pirate base. You'd be surprised how much punishment a TEC Argonis can soak up, especially from Guasses.
My favorite thing to do when playing offline is beat the enemies quickly and just focus on fighting the pirates. They always have more forces than you can build, so it's good practice for new players like myself.

awesome vid. very dramatic smiting of the pirates.

I didn't got Space Ponies, but I heard it has something to do with a colony.
