That's a great video. We're collecting our new pup next Saturday. It really emphasises what a great decision getting a RR is. Your RR is a great looking dog. What's your best advice when socialising with other dogs, what time, with other pups or straight in with adult dogs?? Thank you for any input you can provide.

it is all ok, as long as they have normal temperament. :)

you have to walk a lot with you'r dog all around in you'r field so he knows where hé can go

then try to take his leash away try to keep him close

sometimes go of the fields if he follows of the fields let him know he cant do that

hey there, sweet video! i just got a RR, he's 11 weeks now. like your video i have large fields around me and would like to be able to let him off leash in the future. how did you train him not to run off??! thanks for any tips!

Besides normal recall training (which with ridgeback is somewhat hard) what i did was:I used a beef liver as a treat (which he likes) and when we were outside i gave it to him while I whisteled loudly. I have a specific whistle, and I tried to connect that whistle with reward he got (a liver peaces) He did not had to do anything he was just given the treat when he was near and when he heard whistle. Eventually I lenghteng the distance between me and him and he soon knew who and why is whisteling

In my research I read that the Rhodesian Ridgebacks are Suitable to cold.

This is my main concern as I live in a climate that can get cold and I go hiking in the mountains for 2 to 8 hrs.

What is your experience?

Define very cold? Longest I was outside (and without any protetcion for a dog) when was -5 to -10 °C and knee deep snow was 5 hours and I (he actually) had not any problems. If the weather is dry (no rain, or dog doesn't get soaking wet) and the dog is active I don't believe you will have any problems. But now there is large variety of neoprene (or any other for cold climate) dog vests to buy, so cold would be no issue for me.

I thought of that afterwards, -5 to -10 degrees is lower than I'll go out in, wow.

Here in New Hampshire the average temp. in the winter is 30 to 80 degrees in the summer.

I was thinking of getting a doberman but after doing research I fell in love with the Rhodesian Ridgebacks Temperament and after seeing videos I fell in love with there beauty.

My dog Zoe is half Rottweiler and half Ridgeback, but her genetic material must be 99% Ridgie because she is identical to these dogs, just a little draker in colour and no ridge. I checked out the list of iintelligent dogs, and Ridgeback was #52?!? No way, these are the smartest dogs I have ever met; it just happens that they have very few crazy obsessive/compulsive traits bred into them , like border collies or labs, et alia...

I love my dog!

This is a really great video... had my eyes watering... lost a ridgeback a few years back... i was devastated his was cuzi...(cooZee) he was 13 he had a cancer... Our vet was so dumb she knew he had cancer because we took him in and it had already went up his leg... I have hated and grudged that vet ever since.. because of her i lost the bestfriend of my childhood. We got another one though he is Kane and he is 4 built to kill but heart of gold and i couldn't love him more.

Amazing dogs. So loyal, such amazing watch dogs. Mamba, my Ridgeback is very well trained. Ive had a few Ridgebacks, but............when they find game, (not human) they are as good as gone. Amazing hunters, amazing dogs. If you own a Ridgeback, everyone in your family will remember and talk about that dog until they die.

Yes, they have a mind of their own, but if you have good bond with them, they return home after a half hour or less, and they do listen, and the best training with these loving dogs/gods, is kindness.

About temperament, outside explosive, in house serenity, to be short. But in relation with other breeds, I don't know, I only have experience with dobermans before RR.

I agree with ZDSsdz and will add that from my experience, Rhodesians can be a pack member. These are clever, pensive creatures....very protective of their humans yet not vicious with strangers....guarded and wil wait and scope out a situation. You can actually see them thinking...their eyebrownub twitches. Mine lived with 4 other Dogs & 2 cats.....never had a problem. God, I miss them all so very much!!
