  • by any chance will Garden Lime work as well?

I will be getting a couple of deer hides next week and im a bit of an amateur thanks in advance.

  • @Sakurablossom131313 thats what burnt lime is keep on tanning

  • @BCRachelReed thanks again

  • That's what I want - a "deer hide sweater". Maybe not.

  • I just harvested 3 deer this morning and am planning to tan the hides/skins. I am going by your videos so I may have a few questions. Thanks again

  • Thanks for responding. So I just mix the water, ashes and skins together for a few days?

  • @MrHardPressed stir them once a day keep at 70 dgr

  • I'm at home and want to know if I can use ashes from the fireplace rather than buying lime? How much ashes?

    thanks

  • @MrHardPressed you sure can 5 gal water 1 gal sifted wood ashes thanks for watching

  • Sorry I am a little confused. Do you use lime or lye? I have never put lye on my garden.

  • @e026026 lime or lye will dehair tyhe skin and if you put wood ashes ont the garden you are adding pot ash when it rains on it it leaches out the lye

  • Hey I was thinking you could line the pit with clay. What do you think?

  • @workwithnature yeppers you could

  • Great videos very interesting to be doing the good old survival skills. Keep them coming and happy Christmas :)

  • @workwithnature thanks you have a merry christmas

  • ok great thanks...i will let you know how it turns out :)

  • im on day 2 soaking my hide...is it normal for it to start stinking like decay ???

  • @SocialFever yeppers that normal

  • @SocialFever thats normal

  • i found this part of youtube by going to redneck.youtube.com

  • hey would you be able to do a video on the recipe to tan a deer hide with the hair i wanna make a rug or like a blanket

  • @HOYTCRX just did one called smokeing a deer hide cople weeks ago .

    thanks

    mike

  • @HOYTCRX Hey! You can also look at the video I made about tanning a coyote with the hair on. You follow the same steps, but you just skip the de-hairing process.

  • thanks for the vids. what else can I use to soak my dried out skin so that I can de-hair it. I don't have lye or lime. Can I just hydrate it in straight water real well, and then start scraping it?

  • @teiaperigosa you can put it in warm water for 2 weeks that might work but if i were you i would go to some garden store and get lime .

it take 3 days in warm water to dehair a hide.

  • @BCRachelReed okay. I'll take your word for it and just find the lime... thanks a lot for the responses. I may have a few more questions along the way! stretched and dried hide before, but never tanned. looking to make good use of this goat skin!

  • how do you make deer hide into a usable material with hair on, i would like to make a trappers style hat out of a deer hide with hair on

  • @january989 watch my vidieo on tanning a coyoute hide

  • where can i buy alum

  • HI Mike, I just tanned some deer hides like you showed and it went well, but i couldnt finish up and they dried and got stiff as a board, can i re-hydrate or is it a lost cause.

    Thanks

    Brett.

  • @bfd1966 all is well put them back in soap and make the wet again then keep them in a plastic bag in cool place then you will have plenty of time . thanks for doing the hides you have to stick to the softening process till soft.

but your ok softening is the hardest part to learn.

    have a great day .

    mike

  • I just skined a Coon. I want to make a hat, what do I do, Flesh it, then what? does it need to be tanned?

  • @DigestYourselfTM you bet you need to tan it salt and alum will work and then soften it . have fun thanks for watching .

    b c s m

  • Hey love ur videos!!!! ive probably watched all of them. Now i have a few questions to ask before i attemt this....... First, so after you use the soap as the tanning process you don't need to smoke the hide at all? And also when ur done the dehairing process, do you have to put the hide in vinegar or can you just soak it in water?

  • @1997MountainMan smokeing is something you do to help water proff the skin sometimes i do smoke. vinagar is to stop the lime from working you can also just put it in a big container of clear water and wash out the dehairing sol. thanks for watching .

    b c s m

  • @BCRachelReed Do you think you could make a video for us viewers on how to smoke and water proof the hides for moccasins, pants, and such?

  • @1997MountainMan hey we wiil try to get that up if the weather dont change fo the worst . thanks for watching and keep tanning.

  • Zxbijxz, When I tan my hides with the fur still on, all the hides I have tanned were rabbit hides, but my understanding is that the Alum will work the same with deer hides. One thing to note however is that a deer's fur is hollow and will probably break off eventually. I rinse my hides using city water from my hose. This works just fine. The water that I use to soak the hides in with the Alum in it has been sitting out for a couple of days to allow the chlorine to evaporate.

  • Im wanting to tan with the hair on can i follow the steps above just leave the dehairing pros.out

  • @jntmo there is no need to pre soak the hide go strait the fleshing get all of the flesh. next rub the skin with salt let it set for about 4 or 5 days.now mix 2 pound of salt 1 pound of alum in 2 gal water. let hide sit in this water for to weeks then wash in soapy water to get the salt off stretch and hang on the rack for the softening process . or just hang on the wall for a wall mount you can also glue on felt to the back side if its a wall mount. Thanks for watching have a nice day

  • @BCRachelReed I purchased Alum at a local pool supply company. Is this the right stuff? It says it's used for pools for filter aid to clear cloudy pools.

  • @zxbjxz yep that will work have a good day .

  • @BCRachelReed Thank you sir! I'm doing hair on the hide. I have already salted the hides for 4 days, scraping off the salt and resalting every other day. I'm getting ready to make a solution of 8 cups of salt and 4 cups of Alum with 2 gallons of water. Does this sound right? I don't have a small enough scale to weigh the salt and alum.

  • @zxbjxz yea that sounds right . have fun .

    b c s m

  • @BCRachelReed Can I soak the whole hide like Survivorman did then flesh it after and skip the de hairing process? I've got a deer hid I want to make buckskin out of but rabbit and racoon pelts I want the hair on.

  • @CarolinaCountryGuy because they rinised out the lye that the ashes made in the creek lye will burn your skin and put your eyes out.

    have a good day

  • Cool vids. Thanks. I have a skin coming to me tomorrow from a local hunter/friend and I want to try this ... but because of other projects and lack of time/supplies I'm wondering if I can roll up and freeze the skin then start this process in the spring.

  • @BenTwisted sure you can be sure to put it in a plastic bag . thanks for watching and have a nice day.

    b c s m

  • how much ashes to water do i need for this

  • @crf100person about a gal of hard wood .will do just keep your hide in a warm place so it will work quicker

  • All animals in north america do have enough brains to tan its own hide except two. Bison and beaver. it takes one and a half brains for these two animals.

  • I have seen several people ask about tanning with the fur left on. I had real good success when I made a solution of 1 part Alum (Aluminum Sulfate) to 4 parts water. I made several gallons and let is sit in the water for 5 days. When I was done I fleshed the hide rinsed it real well in water, washed it in a heavy Borax solution, stretched it and worked it until it was soft. It smells nice and looks great.

  • @turbinetoyz Hi, couple of questions I have two hides that I have already fleshed and removed all the fat from a doe and a buck. They have both been salted and resalted for a few day and both are still moist, not totally dryed out. Is tap water ok to use? Where can i buy aluminum sulfate? Do I need to use 20 mule borax to wash the hides after soaking in mixture? Can I put the hides in the dryer to tumble until soft? Thank you for your help!

  • @turbinetoyz Where can i buy aluminum sulfate? Do I need to use 20 mule borax to wash the hides after soaking in mixture? Can I put the hides in the dryer to tumble until soft? How do I get the hair to stay in forever?

  • @zxbjxz

I buy Aluminum sulfate from the local nursery. When I need it I have to order it because they usually do not have it in stock. You may have luck at your nursery. I use 20 mule Borax. My wife does not like me to put hides in the dryer, so I was given an old washer that I use to soften the hides. I have put some rocks and the hides in the washer and set it on its side and let them tumble around in there. This has worked for me.

  • how do i tanit with out dehairing it the deer hide

  • @experimenter19 Hey! Take a look through the comments that are already posted on this video...and you will find some helpful tips on how to tan with the hair on...

  • great stuff. love the videos. love bland county.

  • Thank you so much for posting your videos. I am about to attempt to tan a cow hide for the first time (I had some success with a deer hide). Will soap be ok to use on cow hide ? Also, I would like to try part of it keeping the hair on. If it's not a stupid question, Do I need to do anything to 'fix' the hair so it doesn't moult off later on?

  • In a survival situation you can put the wood ashes on the hide, get it wet and then roll it up. I've done that before.

  • my deer hide is super thin for some reason am i scraping to much on it ???and its tearing very easly..is deer hide supose to be this thin like maybe the thickness of a chamoise cloth or maybe even thiiner is this normal

  • what kind of salt do i use and do i have to freeze them once i salt them

  • man you are gonna need at least 100 pounds of salt to cure all the hides you got.you have to lay them all out hair down on a incline cover each one with salt and let the salt pull the water out of the hide.but you better get to fleshing now because they are decomposeing all the time unless you freeze them . whats the temp where you are. the colder it is 30 40 makes the dehair slow way down.regular table salt for cureing . ok have fun. b c s m

  • pre flesh and the salt cure all the hides. if there slipping now and not in lime water they are starting to rot. salt cure so you can work on them 1 at a time. Mike C Reed

  • so basically its ok for them to slip or start to rot ...salt will keep them from rotting and it will dry them out right???i dnt think my 2 hides im wrking on now are near ready to be fleshed n dehaired the hair isnt even sliping close yet idk wat i doing wrong this is day 3 so any info please...

  • keep the water temp at luke warm ad more lime and that will work some times i put them inside with the heating stove in a old cooler and stir them 2 times a day. that makes it take 2 days. thanks derrick dont give up you can do it. b c s m

  • im in princegton wv lol my mom taught school at rocky gap for 31 years....her name is louise carr and the hides are in my garage and there isnt any way i can keep the water lukewarm orr heat the room so i guess ill juss try to dehair tomorrow i hope it wrks

  • hey mike i got lime havent been able to find burnt lime so the regular lime will wrk wont it??

  • hey that what my dad usted to call regular lime . that s how they make it. sorry for the confusion. just be sure to ware rubber gloves when working with the lime water.

     have a nice day b c m

  • i use like 2.5 or 3 shovels full of wood ash from a fire and mix that with 2.5 or 3 gallons of water soak for 5 to 7 days...yes u use ashes from a fire....the neutralizing process isnt necessary i dnt do it...to me its an extra step

  • Thanks for the tip.

  • all i was able to get was powder lime from lowes they dnt sell burnt lime...will the lime and water work they have been soaking for bout 24 hrs

  • sorry for the confusion you are useing burnt lime thats a old saying my dad used. keep in a warm place the hair should move in about 3 days just pull on it from time to time till it just slips off . have fun and a nicn day. b c s m

  • so i tried to felsh the hides so far thst been very complicated for me to do idk y...although it is day 2 that may be y it was super hard to deflesh and try to dehair.when i did today idk semed like the flesher was cutting into the hide a bit i cut one or 2 holes not meaning too....i wwas doing this on a piece of plywood bout 2 inches thick and 6 or 7 inches wide...since i tried to do the de hair n fleshing today did i ruin my hides since i tried already

  • take a look at my set up where im fleshing it his me about the belt line its 6by 6 and the corners are rounded off. if you dont have a 6 by 6 or 4 by4. you can use pvc 6 or 4 you have not runied the hide yo just have holes in it take it easy and try 8 inchs from the sides working your way in. go around the hide . this is your first time you just have to ge the hang of it. you can do it . have fun . b c s m

  • i have 31 hides coming to me tomorrow they have been in a barrel for bout a week or a lil bit more the guy said that some of them are slipping so is that a good thing??and like they r for free so should i soak them or start dehairing and fleshing them

  • In other tanning tutorials there is a step that calls for soaking the hide for about a week in a solution of water and vinegar. Is this necessary? And do you recommend using neat'f foot oil before softening the hide?

  • yes you can i would use miniral oil instead its cheep and will do the same thing thanks

    b c s m

  • Thanks for the reply. I will try that. Also, I can't get lime in my tiny town, if I can't make it to a big city before I process the deer, how much wood ash should I use? Can I use the wood ash right out of my fire place? Also, can you explain the "neutralizing" step that others say to do with vinegar and soaking for 7 days, and why you don't do it that way? Is there a specific reason to do (or not to do) that step? Thanks again.

  • yes the wood ashes from the fire place will work but dont let any nails or metal get in it it will stain the hide.neutralizing is stopping the lime from keeping up the decaing of the hide . lime speeds up that part of dehairing. just rinse the hide good and leave in a bucket of water over night . have fun . b c sw m

  • hello mike you may no my mom she was a school tgeacher where you live at rocky gap elementary school she taught there for 31 yrs her name is louise carr....my question is can i just soak my hides in hot water instead of usin lye because where we live we arent allowed to have fires lol so can i use just soak in water for a bout a week....

  • No, you can't just soak it in hot water because it will cook the hide. Remember you can actually eat the hide if you are in a survival situation and you're desperate. You can also make glue. Instead of lye you can use burnt lime that you can buy at Lowes or any hardware or feed store.

  • so i can mix water andburnt lime together to substitute for ash and water....it will still get the hair off hide right??

  • Right, that's exactly right.

  • ok asweet ty very much....right now i dot 2 hides in about ahlf trash can full of water and bout 1.5 quarts of regular lime i couldnt find the burnt lime lowes didnt have it lol....so im using lime and water i guess that will work right

  • yes it will work hang in there and you will get a good peice of leather.

    thanks b c s m

  • wow, i liked this vid so much another fellow redneck ima subscribe and watch somemore vids ty very much

  • hpiownzilla01 thanks for your comment i have a lot of fun doing the videos next i will show you what i did with this hide. thanks again b c s m

  • hi what do i do if i want to keep the hair on the hide? how would i do that?

  • Do not soak the hide. Flesh it immediately, and go straight to the tanning solution. I recommend a Cabela's tanning kit. Follow the instructions for "hair on" tanning.

  • Thank you so much for such a rapid response. We are very excited to do this activity with the kids. Your videos are great, I love how you incorporated a little history into it too. When we are all done I will be sure to share our outcome with you.

  • Hello. We are wanting to tan 3 deer hide as a home school project with the kids. I thought you were sopose to salt it 1st, I see this video and think I am wrong that I should be soaking it 1st. Yes? No? I will be getting the hide tomorrow and would love to know how to do this right, we are really excited and this looks so much easier then my research. Thanks so much!

  • hey RLKWALKER thanks for asking you only salt when your gonna store the hide before you tan it. go ahead and soak it in your dehairing water and lime or wood ashes and water. be sure to stir them 2 times a day. 3 to 4 days is all it should take. thane dehair and flesh. rinse and wring then put in your soap. streach and soften. thanks and have fun. b c s m

  • Hi!

What is the lime to water ratio for your dehairing solution? How do you dispose of the lime solution once you are done with it? Is it toxic to the environment?

    Thanks!

  • morgetron hey you can us as much lime as you like i use 5 gal water i quart lime .lime i what farmers use to sweeten up the ground so pore it out on your lawn. juts rember to wear your gloves. thanks b c s m

  • thanks you r a big help BCRachelReed

  • hi this is my first time tanning but i want to know can you still keep the hair on

  • h4224jack first flesh your hide dnot soak .after you get it fleshed cover flesh side with salt and lay at a angle so it can drain do this 2 times about a week should do it then soak in a cold water to clean get all trash blood dirt out of hair. next soak in 20 mule team borax it will keep the bugs from eating your hide. then soak the hied i 1 bar soap for 2 or 3 days.becareful that the hair does not start to slip. then just streach and soften . or if makeing a wall hang just let dry.

  • i'm soaking a deer hide right now. i don't have any lyme so i'm soaking it in a water wood ash solution. i want to make buckskin leather but should i have cured it with salt first? i killed it today so i might can save this hide if i did something wrong

  • your ok salting a hide is to dry it out for later use. just stay with what you started. your doin fine. thanks for your comment. BCSM

  • great vid

  • Thanks! Part II is going up now and will be ready in a couple of hours.
