I play the bow like a cello and feel really dumb cause i keep contradicting myself which one it is. But i tried the other one with the underhand grip for like 30min. And wanted to shoot myself. It was soo uncomfortable and i have gorilla arms so i know its weird but i feel i can use the cello type bow easier cause its more monuverable.
I play german bow now after playing french for 5 years. It's 50-50 to me. Yes the french bow seemed to have more wrist usage but yet I have better grip and control of the bow when it's german
@wks1978 I played french for 3-4 years before switching to German and yes, German took a little longer to get used to bowing straight. It often starts a little squint but once you get used to it and understand how a straight bow looks and feels then it's not a problem :)
The G Major chord after the D F# can be played in one position across the four strings so u dont have to string change twice and shift in one chord. Put a 2 on the G on the Estring, 1 on the B, and thumb across the harmonics...
German Bow isn't difficult. I started on French and after 3 or 4 years swapped to German. Takes longer to get used to German but once you do i think you get alot more power/strength to play the bass. I think It's defo worth a 6month-year trial :)
I started playing with a german bow for 5 years, then switched to a French Bow for the next 4 years, and I personally like the French style better because I feel that you can use more of your wrist.
If you dont recognise a bass bow, just see how the person is holding it when not using it, eg, long rest or pizzicato. If they hold it pointing down, its german, if they hold it pointing up its french. German bows are held with the palm facing up, whereas french bows are held just like the cello and violin bows.
Either the bass is too soft or the orchestra is too loud.
I think if the orchestra would lower the dynamics and the bassist would move his bow down towards the bridge to attain a more soloistic tone, the sound would be great.....But we're listening to a recorded sound. I'm sure the live sound was alot better. Great performance! Bravo!

I just would like to remember that this concert has never written by Dragonetti (probably by Dragottesini ;-)!). Surely it's an Edoard NANNY's concert written while he was the director of Nationa Conservatory in Paris. The only one who has recorded the authentic concert by Domenico Dragonetti has been italian maestro STEFANO SCIASCIA. Look at his web site. Also Fiona Palmer in her wonderful book indicates the correct concert edit by Malaric. So don't call him"Dragonetti Concert" :-((!
But remember this concert has written by Edouard Nanny and not by Dragonetti. It's an historical great mistake. In London you can find the original one, or if you listen to a cd by Stefano Sciascia. It's very hard in comparison to this.
Most times, when competent people are looking for a title, they look at the title bar at the top of a screen. Alas, this is proven to be the case yet again. Domenico Dragonetti - Concerto for Double Bass I mvt.
There's a fine distinction between nerd and educated. Because I choose to insult people with innuendo instead of calling them big and fat and assuming that they have physical attriutes I myself am self-concious of doesn't mean I'm nerd. And anyone who goes to youtube, including you, to listen to classical music must be in some part a bit of a nerd.
I give you credit. You can't guess phsyical appearance, but personality you can get parts of. Actually youtube brings out the worst in me with arguements. I'm not this bad at all in person.
i too play german and think wrist movement and control of the bow is easier. played french for 3 years b4 german. I suppose it must depend on the person.
@PiercedxXxCrystal It does all depend on the person based on the simplicity of it, however I found more trouble with wrist problems using the german over the french. It also seems to leave less room for increased style with the bow, but Im sure that it was because I only played for about a year on the german.
@PiercedxXxCrystal I have never had the pleasure of playing with a German bow, but I believe it present a much more controlled sensation in posture because, as you said, the position of your wrist is parallel to the motion of the bow, whereas the French style kind of constitutes the movement of your entire upper arm, which presents much difficulty in controlling many factors in your playing (volume, attack, sustain, etc.).

It's nice to see that the bass had a 'lead approach' in some classical music.

And as for bows, I play French, and it seems to have more wrist usage than German.

I play french bow.
I've never tried German.
What I do notice is a lot of german bow players seem to bow with a slightly crooked bow, not exactly perpendicular to the string.
Does anyone else notice this?
wks1978 2 years ago
Yes, but that's bad technique. Normally you try to have a nice and even 90 degree angle to the string.
