McCain didn't lose because he was too liberal or too conservative. McCain lost because he was too similar to George W Bush, and had Palin out there polarizing herself in the eyes of the voters.

McCain didn't try to distance himself from Bush's policies, which pushed people from voting for him. Palin hurt him even more by constantly making comments that completely polarized her as a candidate. Those two things made swing votes almost impossible for McCain, and very possible for Obama.

The GOP lost in 2008 because GWB ruined the GOP. He started a very unpopular war, and he spent like a drunken sailor.

Meh, no it isn't. Have you seen mid term congressional polling data. The Democrats are in very, very big trouble in the House of Representatives... during a time were Obama popularity would supposedly help the ticket.
