The neo-cons targeted the evangelical Christians as the group they needed to firm up their base. Think about it, most evangelical Christians are Southern and poorly educated. They were easy marks. What they failed to realize is that those bozos will vote Republican regardless of what the party or candidate does. The GOP screwed up and lost touch with their moderates who now vote independent or democrat candidates. It's the "middle" that dictates national elections, not the base.
