  • Huh. Beginning is sampled from THX-1138.

  • This takes me back yearssssssss. Grew up with this album, die with this album.

  • When I first heard Pretty hate machine in 92', I was 15. Needless to say, i really enjoyed it, then when i got my hands on the downward spiral I was hooked. Since then i have been a true fan, always waiting impatiently for the next album. Thank you for 2 decades of amazing music, it has been a great pleasure to watch you grow and matuer as both an artist and as a person. I can only hope to continue enjoying new NIN music for many years to come.

  • Yes friends, there is truly no free will and we are just machinery.

  • I was in 11th grade (1993) when I got Pretty Hate Machine. Loved NIN ever since.

  • Musically.

  • 1992-94 are definitely his darkest years.

  • @Bostonian91

agreed.. 1992 and 94 were his darkest.. since then he has his dark moments.. especially when he wrote "Every Day is Exactly The Same" profound meaning behind his works.. but it's bound to be different to someone else's perspective.

  • The opening sounds of "Mr. Self Destruct" on the Nine Inch Nails album The Downward Spiral is a sample from THX 1138 in which a man is being beaten by a prison guard. THX 1138 the movie, watch it.

  • Introduction is perfect

  • i'm sorry but the Intro sounds like a giant fapping o_o

  • @zyntherius2 and that's not badass?

  • @thepeopleinthetrees itotallyagree

  • best intro ever!!!!!

  • a.k.a. Mr. Put Off Homework Like There's No Tomorrow

  • the story of my life

  • I don't think age factors into music too much anymore. This wasn't the norm when it came out, it was a subculture that embraced it, and there still is that subculture amongst kids in modern times that embrace Reznor's work. Insync and the Backstreets Boys were big shit of the 90s, and you know what no one remembers? Those groups. Good music lives on despite the bad. So don't worry about it. 20 years from now Spiral will still be a classic, if not more so.

  • @SloreTactician Yup, and I was one of them !!!!!!!!

  • D00M Generation musik

  • Damn, this is really sick!!! One of my favourite songs when I was 19.

  • schmagoogle, could you list what track numbers they are?

  • It almost sounds like some kind of television channel depicting a futuristic robot authority figure beating a man on the ground?

  • @cxc496

Interesting thought. Try "The Becoming" immed. after this track.

  • First NIN album I ever got... but it wouldn't be the last.

  • Now that was a good film. The kids Will make some music human nature to fuck, kill and create.

  • where can i find this album

  • @TheStonesfan50 l2google.

  • @TheStonesfan50 just about anywhere lol

  • 90s kid right here! :)

  • ღ♫(((¯`♥♪(♥♫(♥♪(♥♫d)))`♥‿ღ´(((b♫♥)♪♥)♫♥)♪♥´¯)))♫ღ

  • our generation has really gone down hill, in the 90's, everything was kick ass cartoons, music. now its almost 2012 and either everything is not played anymore or cancelled... seriously this gen should be last gen, and lets bring all the old but good things back

  • Not everyone in this generation likes the popular music... no it can't be call music, its shit. I love nin and was born in 1994

  • i doubt many people know that the opening part of this song is from the 1st film by George Lucas THX 1138

  • @RAND0MM3TALG0TH I did know that. It's the part where he's watching the "tv" beat someone. Great film.

  • @RAND0MM3TALG0TH

Did you also know he sampled "Robot Jox"? I can't recall which track ATM.

  • This is a great song off a great album.

  • @SloreTactician Your talkin about me :)

  • ONLY ON ACID<<<<<

  • @paps1707 you're the perfect age for the dubious 'poetry' of this album, then. Do me a favor and wear a dog collar and black eye shadow to school to go with your NIN shirt, that'll show those dumb jocks.

  • This song is the theme of Screwtape.

  • This is just....divine!

  • Anthem of the mid '90's teenager. Not just this song but the album. Epic. Will never forget those days.

  • 14:28 in the movie

  • the beginning is from the first movie George Lucas directed called THX 1138 ..kinda like 1984

  • Not on SYL level, but it has more angst.

  • there's a few remixes of this by trent aswell that are pretty awesome, theyre on further down the spiral

  • personally, I find this song highly motivational when lifting weights

  • @OrbGoblin Same here! Not just this song though, I'll listen to a lot of his faster paced songs while working out.

  • 3 people need to self destruct.

  • @barelyillegal79 i understand why you'd have said that but not under these circumstances, thats not funny.

  • Wow!!!! Just heard this for the first time in like over 12 years. This has got to be the most underrated NIN song! Love the drug and suicide references:) Bad ass!

  • @kindasortaplayguitar - Are you implying I wasn't a bitter teenager?

  • @SloreTactician I love this response.

  • @catastrpoheballet101 It is also referred to in in depth psychology as the shadow which every single one of us possesses yet tries to deny. When we've rejected the "bad" in us it usually shows itself externally. In this case all of the things he hates about himself are all of the things he has rejected within him which causes the suffering and appears outside of him. Accepting all these things he hates about himself is called reclaiming the shadow.

  • i want Self Destruct

  • @catastrpoheballet101

I believe he's trying to express the condition of the human mind; a retard leading on the part of the mind that expresses itself to its full potential.

The result is a destructive person

  • An entire generation of bitter teenagers grew up with this album.

  • @SloreTactician Makes me sad this generation is growing up with sparkling vampires and boy singers with "boy"-ginas.

  • @coldstaind91 Not all of us, some of us were raised correctly.

  • @coldstaind91 Not my case, I'm 29.

  • @coldstaind91 im 14 and i listen to this.

  • @dreamtheaterfan360 Bonus points.

  • @coldstaind91 yeah I wish there were more popular artists like this.

    More music like this...

I'm fifteen and I grew up with Pink Floyd, Korn, Evanescence, Nine Inch Nails, Otep and Emilie Autumn

  • @Thespiriticlan

Get some Tool, Pusifier & Lamb of God mixed in there!

  • @recalibration I did.

    Then I had an eargasm.

    Then died from awesomeness.

    It was just that amazing.

  • @Thespiriticlan

How about something as dark & in the vein as NIN, but completely different genre?

"Well, gosh darn, I said it feels so right / Settin off explosives on a Saturday night"

    See watch?v=iZw0tVwtATY & watch?v=28htktcco_s .

  • @Thespiriticlan me too

  • @christttttttopher >,< nice to know

  • @coldstaind91 Atlest i'm not.

  • @flyboy2000008 Atleast*

  • @coldstaind91 I'm in the age range to be considered part of today's teenage society, but I am very proud to say that I don't follow those trends. NIN FOREVER. <3!!!!

  • @DNAshurii Well, then you rock as a teenager, you rock as a fucking person, and you rock as a NIИ fan! haha

  • @SloreTactician well sorry, not all of us had perfect lives and NIN one of the few things that held us together when everything went to shit, not everything is the same for everyone.

  • @SloreTactician Bitter teen, bitter adult, bitter old man, bitter deceased person :P

  • @SloreTactician I was one of them WHY THE FUCK IS THAT GUY BANGING ON THE DOOR?!?!!??

  • @SloreTactician

    Now we're bitter adults.

  • @SloreTactician I was one of them!

  • Beast. 8-)

  • 最高の曲やー

  • @COIDMAN777 yeah, pots and pans falling down the stairs. Very funny jackie chan.

  • Thats dr. Self destruct to you

  • Taking a shit while listening to this song. Epic.

  • @xz129 very epic.

  • this shit had a giant effect on who I am right now...as I grew up my parents wanted to stop it but the force was just to strong

    日本の漫画で、面白いのは、『寄生獣』が、面白いですよ♪

  • woah... I was listening to this song and the cover art on the video started to throb O_O cool!

  • @PoseidonKross2009 Wow, you're right.. o-O Neat-o.

  • This song is so fucking awesome. It pumps me up all the time.

I am the bullet in the gun -perfect line right there

  • Before I knew that sample was from THX I thought for years that it was Trent in the studio by himself. It even sounds like him.

  • This is out of tune!!!

  • HE RECORDED DOWNWARD SPIRAL AT THE SHARON TATE HOME!!

  • This fucking album is a work of art.

  • i fucked you in the butt... now your my bitch.

  • one person is going to get killed by MR SELF DESTRUCT

  • @Dracanon

    ur next on my list.

  • OH DAMN

  • 1 person bites their nails

  • When i first checked out this album (being a HUGE fan of The Fragile) i didn't like it. It sounded like it could make you insane just from listening to it, just a lot of screaming/whispering set to loud compressed beats made in computer... But after i bought and REALLY listened all the way through - i love it! It's amazing!

I think the album is supposed to make you feel like you're falling deeper and deeper into insanity, hence the title: The Downward Spiral

  • @WelcomeGhostsIV The same for me... I really liked a few songs, like Closer and Ruiner, but other than that, it was at first too abrasive for me. After some time, though, I've begun to truly appreciate it. One thing I love about NIN is seeing it change through the years, each album describing Reznor's mental state.

With that said, The Fragile FTW.

  • This song describes my alcohol problem almost to the fucking word, some lyrics don't apply but holy shit, it's like what the devil on my shoulder would say to me if I were a cartoon...

  • LOve this song.........I can't BELIEVE that this album came out 17 years ago! HOLY SHIT...........

  • What is your "self-Destruct"?

  • play nazi zombies while listening to this song

  • I use to listen to this over and over again on my way to work when I was like 19/20yrs old..

  • Comment removed

  • This song is for all the people with bullshit pig bully parents.

  • And I control you.

  • when i listen to this am i an animal, human robot?

  • the last 50 seconds of this song fucked up my ears lol

  • I'll fucken say it. Trent Reznor is to music as Edgar Allen Poe was to poetry.

  • "no one gets out alive"

  • " I am an exit"

  • Comment removed

  • I somehow taught that it was an helicopter on the cover,no I'm dissapointed.

  • No dislikes, gotta like that.

  • @savinisbitch There is 1 dislike :(

  • FYI: The sounds at the beginning are from the movie THX-1138, where the main character is watching some film of a man getting beaten by a police baton. I was watching it a while back and was like "Hey, it's Mr. Self Destruct!" Gotta love Trent's obscure samples.

  • @Sarc37 I think he named a few of his songs after episodes from The Twilight Zone.

  • @Sarc37 i heard it synched up with Begotten where god is cutting out his innards. either could be true i guess, i haven't checked

  • @Sarc37 Hahahahahaha yeah I just watched THX-1138 (WOW two people who have actually watched that actually good Lucas movie!) and saw the scene and knew instantly where I had heard those sounds before. Then again I can see why he referenced THX-1138; it details a overly callous and totalitarian society of absolute materialism (wink, wink) that is enforced by brutal (robotic) police and tripe religious inconography (wink, wink), themes Reznor has used at various times in his musical career.

  • @MarkWF5485 But did you know that NIN 1969 was a character in the THX 1138 script that didn't make it into the movie? "The policeman turns and walks into the whiteness, leaving THX sitting on his bed. The other nine men are: SEN 5241, PTO 0340; NIN 1969; TWA 7070; DWY 1519; NCH 0066; IMM 9472; JOT 1288; and TRG 3442."

  • @ModerateMartian Iiiiinteresting! It is a truly profound work from way back when George Lucas didn't completely suck.

  • @MarkWF5485 Sure is, love the original version, not so much the Director's Cut due to the fact George Lucas changed so much and some of the contexts within the film. Like the part I used in this video watch?v=5Bj5Fq4Sq1s

  • @Sarc37 thats awesome i didnt know that

  • @Sarc37 And I love Trent even more now. THX-1138 is one of my favs and I never noticed that. Thanks for the note, mate. May your pleasures in life increase!

  • @Brunnhilde1000

gay, scanty commentary there.. what the fuck, you some ghandi junior?.. plejjuss increes.. faggotass

  • @hiv1111 It was an hedonistic cynical blessing. Perhaps I should have put a LOL to make things more clear.

Dude, you complement me far too greatlly!

It could only be a "faggotass and gay" in a Oscar Wilde Lord Henry sort-of-way, but even so, it would be stretching Lord Henry too far for a compliment. It was just a meek heteressexual commentary, really.

As for being ghandi junior, again, I am far from it. To be the daughter of Ghandi in character would be fantastic. But no, Im not.

  • @Brunnhilde1000 this comment is awesome.

  • @Bostonian91 Thanks. Even in abuse, truth is complimentary.

  • @Brunnhilde1000 My bow to you, few people would be able to answer better to this abuse.

  • @Sarc37 hey I have that movie really obscure movie

  • @Sarc37 I always thought it was Trent using his punching bag

  • Imagine playing this at a rave.. NIN is trippy in a bad ass way.

  • @Skwafatch

    or taking estasy... OMG...

  • Fuck this album is lot better thanthe fucking overrated shit of pornography

  • the continuing conversion from human to sheep is ever continuing we need to realize we are the ones in control , we are the leader of this country not religion not politics not morals not the sake of children us the present the people we have been lied to

  • @TheProfit12 what counrty u fuck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! the world a shit hole and we're all FUCKED!

  • @TheProfit12 No, the leader of this country is a nigger named Barry, and he just happens be a Christian with children.
