I want to thank you so much for your easy lessons, they are wonderful!
I have a question about the slipknot, does it count as a stitch when you read a pattern? or do you start counting the stitches starting from the stitch after the slipknot?
@Knit1For1Life when you make a slip knot it usually does not count as a stitch. However, the way I make mine, my slip knot is loose and I count it as a chain. I work into it as if it were a chin. If you tighten the knot then do not count it as a chain.
@ManectricPup well, then it is not a slip knot.... Slip knots will slide...thus the name! Perhaps you are working too tightly. Try to keep everything loose.
THANK YOU for the Back to Basics videos! You are a wonderful teacher. I am learning from you by myself - all my family is back home. You're really helping me! I'm grateful. -Lisa
Thank you for these B2B videos! I used to crochet and then stopped when I became too busy with college, and I had lost my skills and needed some refreshers and these are perfect :)
My chain keeps getting really tight when I begin, and I find it harder to keep my string tight because it keeps slipping from my fingers. Can you help?
@babymariemerchant I 'm not sure. It seems you are trying to keep your yarn too tight. That is what makes your chain tight. The yarn around your fingers should be relaxed, not tight. There needs to be some tension, but not too much. Getting the right tension comes with practice.
I just want to say I <3 this back 2 basic 2010 series so far. I am on night 2 of practicing & I think I got the single crochet as I just finished my 7th row of my sampler scarf. Had to pull it all out on my 1st try cause I was doing something weird when I was done with my row, but I got it figured out. THANKS... this is my 1st experience crochetting & I am teaching myself with your AWESOME help of course. Thanks again!
Wow! I gotta say, i'm not really into crochet, but i'm gonna try for sure!!! You're such a good teacher, you make this seem so easy! I'll let you know how it went!
I've been practicing for a while and every time I start the chain and complete about 5 or more loops, the chain begins to either twist or curl up. So when I look for the "v" I have to kinda stretch it out to straighten it so I can see the "v"'s I've been making. Am I doing something wrong to make the chain start to curl?
@subachel size 13? if it's a steel hook they will indeed be tiny. If you are using the size hook to go with your yarn... with medium yarn you should use a size I ir J which is a US 10; or a K will be a 10 1/2 or 6.5mm. Relax your yarn tension. Your yarn should not be stretched while making your stitches; the loops should be loose so your hook will easily go into the loops. It takes practice.
THANKS!! I've been trying to use this book I got called Readers Digest Complete guide to needlework and have been getting nowhere. Illustrations just don't cut it! I love how clear your videos are! Thanks again!!!:)
your vidoes are the only ones i seem to be able to follow!!! thanks for making something easy...easier! and taking your time!! ...QUESTION: does it matter whne you make your chain if you bring your yarn over the top of your hook or from the bottom? i bring mine over and it dosnt get the "bumps" on the back like yours, both sides look the exact same.. am i doing something wrong?
It does not matter; you are essentially grabbing the yarn and pulling it through the loop. The bump is there, but it may be between the other two loops. keep practicing!
I will practice practice today! after house work and cooking dinner lol

@michikodesu Yes they do curl a little. Keep practicing. You want the chains to be all the same size & shape.

anncomiling 1 year ago
Do you mean your stitches are too tight? or your yarn is too thin?
If your stitches are too tight, use a larger hook. If your yarn is too thin, use a smaller hook.
