@MrKurosaki95 the main carving tool is a block plane. check out current pricing at ensobuki.com. craved and finished weapons can range from $150 up to $300
Ok i have a cherry wood bokken that has lasted me quite a while and is still good but its kinda beat up and a bit bulky so can i just almost sharpen it or is there a proper way to do that?
@Mr3nvious Well, tuning up a used weapon is always a good idea. If you like the size andshape i might suggest refinishing it with a 200 grit sandpaper. I like to use a random orbit sander but doing it by hand with a sanding block will work to. Finish up with 400 grit and re-oil with a mixed teak or a Boiled linseed oil.
Thanks for a great set of videos. Is the curve on the blanks made by bending the blank by clamping or steam or other force, or is the blank literally cut out of a larger piece of wood in a curve? Apologies if this is a stupid question; I'm not a woodworker but would be interested in learning more. Cheers!
@Gilmaris those who dont learn history are doomed to repeat it for example hitler didnt learn his lesson from napoleon when he tried to invade russia and france and england at the same time right befor winter needless to say the result was the same
Well....i have made a few of those. But really only as experiments. I havnt done Kendo since i was a kid, and am not really up on the latest..I understand they have grafite Shinai now.....
yeah they have carbon/graphite shinai out now...but i dont like em. they're more durable but they dont have that traditional shinai feel, idk how to explain it if you haven't used one and whatnot. anyway the graphite/carbon ones are also usually pretty expensive( i see em in the $400's on a regular basis). *shrug oh well :) ty anyway
The Blanks I produce are 1.25" X 1.25" X 48" and they come w the standard curve. They are Grain Correct and are Impact Grade Hickory. The starter kit i sell comes w 2 blanks, one to practice carve and one for the finish weapon. one blank per weapon. If your an experienced carver one blank will prolly do. I do a deal w the standard kit. email me at the addy on the vid for details.
Shaping ever aspect of the weapon is just a matter of taking it a strike at a time. There is no real Secret to it. make a few cuts, look at it ..then a few more..look again..Ect, ect , ect.. It absolutly requires you to enjoy what your doing. And Patience...LOTS
I assume you mean a Belt Sander? Yes they are faster AND YES its a great way to make a Bokken. I've done 2-3 that way. BUT, you see, I like to carve. And i'm in no hurry. You see, once you make a bokken that will last for YEARS there's no need to be in a Rush to make another. And, I really dont like SawDust all That much. BUT , People DO keep emailing me about making one w a belt sander, so I will get to that.
a plane god damn. doh when i was about 13 i made a bokken, took me close to 2 weeks. i used a knife for the full crafting apart from sanding, im 31 now and i still own it, i would love to try and improve on it... (mummbles about why didnt i think of using a plane)
Rich great instructional once again..... Sanding - you have forearms and biceps of death after sanding to the right smoothness.
I use about 8 different grits of paper, finishing of with dry 2400grit wet and dry paper... smooth isnt in it its sick.
thanks for posting, good job!

"This is not Japan, this is not the 1600s"
Indeed, you can bet that back in 1600s Japan woodworkers and others were saying, "dude, this is not the Heian period. Move with the times, man."
They weren't stuck in centuries old history, and there's no reason we should be, either.
