Mark is one of the greatest musicians of all times. I listen to his music daily and feel thankful for the chance of enjoying each and every time I listen to them once, twice and so on.
I uploaded a version of Heavy Fuel, performed by myself playing all instruments down my homestudio. If you want to check it it´s Heavy Fuel Dire Straits by Joe Galvan (that´s me, Ha!)
I can understand it if this is not one's thing, but how could ANYBODY actively dislike this? MK is one of the smoothest and elegant guitarists who have ever graced this earth.
I saw Dire Straits in Montreal, somewhere around 1985.
When the show ended there was still about 10 minutes left before the lights came on at 11:00pm (bylaw). So MK sat on a little set of stairs on stage by himself and just freelanced.
I think, you better put together a list of knopflers 50 best guitar riffs and put'em all on rank number 1. At least I'm not abel to chose between first- and second- and third-best
These are all amazing... but is there room in your heart for the opening to R&J? It's one of the most beautiful guitar riffs ever. (Played on one of the most beautiful guitars I've ever laid eyes on).
Also have you tried playing it the way he does, with the open G tuning, but fretted with the left hand? Ouuucchh... Need an ice pack...
@40gilad 1. Calling Elvis 2. What It Is 3. Down to the Waterline 4. Why Aye Man 5. Fade to Black 6. Brothers In Arms (Live; from "On the Night") 7. Heavy Fuel (Live; from "On the Night") 8. Money for Nothing 9. Money for Nothing (Live; from "On the Night") 10. Lady Writer 11. Sultans of Swing 12. Sultans of Swing (Live; from "Alchemy")

you are a moron. "Mark Knopfler's Best Guitar Riffs"
should have explained it. and yes knopfler can and did create some great riffs. they are a bit more difficult to play though than page's crap for example.
Good? That's it? Man, you know not much about guitar... Clapton is amazing as well, but no need to compare them, Knopfler is more than a good guitar player... And try to spell his name correctly dumbass
0:37 is "Fade to Black" - a relatively unknown but still great guitar lick. 0:07 is the main riff from "What It Is." Thanks for your interest in my video! :)
it's from the "alchemy" performance in 1983... however I got that clip from the web, since unfortunately the alchemy concert was never released on dvd :(

Hey, what does a word "riff" even mean, anyway?
smvc90 6 months ago
@smvc90 It comes from the abbreviation "RF" which stands for "Repeated Figure". The classical version is "Ostinato". :)
