Very refreshing to hear an all-male version. I had heard about Texas All-State Men's doing a version but it completely slipped my mind until now. It's very interesting to see what parts of the arrangement end up becoming more pronounced and the difference of the effect when changing the tempo of the song, especially when comparing this to the one I posted of SoCal Regional Women's.
Thanks for the upload! This was great, and I'm sure it would have been even more breathtaking had I seen it live.
I really just have to say that there are NO other men's chorus versions out there that even come close to this. I live in Colorado, but seriously, Texas has some kick ass choirs.
This is a very beautiful but forceful song. It gives me goosebumps every time I hear it. The choir did an amazing job of harmonizing, and the dynamics are beautiful.
The 8th/9th grade men's choir sang this song at my school this year, and they did an amazing job as well.
I think that they really accomplished that because no matter how many times I listen to this song, it never gets old. And, it sounds so much better in Men's voices. Don't get me wrong, I love women's voices, but there is just something about a powerful men's chorus singing about the end of the world that just gets to me, haha.
Such energy in this performance, yet wonderful articulation, and a beautiful legato in the pie jesu section.... We are doing this this spring for SWIowa Men and I hope we can do it well. It is a fabulous piece.
I absolutely love this song in men's voices! It sounds great! And the piano ia awesome! I love the section where it gets slow and drawn out! GORGEOUS! Great performance, gentlemen! This is one of my favorite songs by Stroope, and just favorite songs haha!
This song is absolutely amazing! And the way the piano is giving the undertone fits in perfectly. You'd expect to hear this in a End of the World movie of something, haha. My choir is doing this in the Spring Concert. I hope we sound good! =)
i know from personal experience that this song is very hard to perform, but after listening to some other versions, plus my own schools, i think it was a tad bit too slow. =/
it's a shame more stuff from Michgan's All-State aren't on youtube. they always have a first-rate all-state. dr. anton armstrong said it's one of the best in the nation....
Eh... Texas still has the best choirs. No other State can match it, sorry. It's not a bragging thing... It's just ten times more difficult to make All-State in Texas due to our population; only the best make it.
especially last years all state band, i was at the performance because my brother was in it (and i plan on it this year) there will never be a group with that tonality again. it was absolutly amazing.
I'm tear-ring up right now...powerful...This is what men should/could be doing with their time and energy...acting as a Team to bring such phenomenal strength and beauty to the planet...TY!
i think i see sam from oconnor.i cant say much. just dont lose control.i really wish i had the opprotunity to sing in this choir. i really wish i had made all- state last year... but this is my year. no joke im going to go.
This song is absolutley amazing, that was one of the finest tenor sections ive ever been in. one of Dr. Stroope's finest pieces. i still get goose bumps whenever i hear it.
This song is kick ass...he came to our school North Harford High last week...unfortunately our Dies Irae wasn't quite as good because the freshman (especially the tenor freshman) didn't know the song at all.
Ooh, I've never heard this performed by a men's choir before. Wow.
Z. Randall Stroope is amazing. I got to work with him a few years back, and it was a wonderful experience. Not to mention I love all his compositions and arrangements.
Didn't he make an arrangement of "There is No Rose?" Oh, our chamber choir in school is singing that and it's absolutely gorgeous. The All state texas choirs really are beautiful.
im mad that this choir didn't get a full orch!! ugh.... it would have beeen so much more amazing with these powerful male voices... and a kind of forboding orchestral sound... ahh.. this song gives me chills.. TEXAS IS THE BEST.. no one can top us
Me and a group of guys in my choir are doing this!

The latin poetry isnt all like "Im a lion, Im a lion , I wil eat you!"
theres a poetic thing too like instead of having an accent on "Dies Irae" tehre should have been less emphasis on "Irae" idk but its hard to control.
