@yokiitaja1 I don´t know anything about kinds of wood, but maybe that is the key. Some trees may have thicker and/or stronger wood. Anyway the Vickers fires .303 ammo while the M249 fires .223, so that should count too.

@YeaYoKo no, you said replace S.A.W. with M249 S.A.W. they are the same gun,while on the other hand, the M249 fires a 5.56 NATO, while the Thompson fires the .45 Auto, being completely different guns, with more then 70 years in between them. when i was deployed, we just called it the M42. don't ask why, ill never know..... in fact, the support guy, who we called the Bra ( because Bras support boobs, and he supported us) mounted a M203 launcher on his M42, the thing weighed at least 25 pounds...

The thompson was replaced because it was heavy, and it was not good in jungle combat. The rounds weren't reaching a high enough velocity penetrate jungle cover or bullet proof vests that were used at the time and the main reason they wanted to make the m3 was to copy the germans

I love the mythbusters but come on y would they use a 223 weapon to try this... I have seen footage of .50 cal machine guns chop through trees with a couple hundred bullets on a tree even bigger than this one. Really it is possible but with a much larger caliber... and a vulcan mini gun is not needed lol the ideal weapon would most likely b the browning .50 cal

I've actually done this at a Vermont training site. Two 3-round bursts from an M60 on a qualification run and I took down an 8-in birch tree. Of course, it was green, but no less fun, lol! Using projectiles to cut down a tree, though? Not very efficient.

The SAW M249 is a MG by the definition of machine gun, and so is the AK-47. Contrarily, a standard army issued M16A2 has 3 modes, safety, single, and burst. Just change the receiver for automatic capabilities, but the SAW is not JUST a fully automatic belt fed M16. Come on now, be rational, I'm not going to explain it.

"If they wanted to use a MG, they should have used an M-60."(I sure hope you're judging that on the cartridge). Yes, MGs, automatic rifles, and SMGs all serve different purposes.
