I don't think the Jovi are as bad as people are making out. To be honest, the shows have got longer, the albums collection has got bigger, and Jon and Richie are still on stage performing their arses off for us. I really think people are criticising them unfairly at times. My only bug bear is that the extra guitarist, Bobby Bandiera, was never needed, and is certainly not needed now. Richie is the only lead guitarist and it is an insult that they allow someone else to steal some of his chords.
I love to hear Richie sing lead on Jovi material. It has a unique spin on the music. Doesn't hurt that in my opinion he IS the Soul of Bon Jovi so I would expect that to be up front in his Solo stuff .
Richie is a hell of a guitar player. I wish a real introspective part of his music would start coming out now, after all the wild oats are sown and it's only the music that remains. But he will never be able to if he keeps doing those crazy Bon Jovi tours. I don't want to hear Jon sing anymore, he has nothing to tell anyone anymore. Please Richie, get into your own and retire the Juggernaut. My dad used to think he was the eternal playboy too -- it fades you know, make something while it lasts.
Comments are true about Jon the 'corporate figurehead'. I had exactly the same lingering feeling lately. It seems Jon is in love with his own myth, finding acceptance and esteem among the 'big boys' in the corporate world. 'Being someone." I watched his Larry King interview and I simply can't stand him... Bon Jovi has indeed become a Juggernaut, no originality and subtlety anymore. It's been driving Richie into the ground as well, having to take a stint of rehab during the exhaustive touring.
@pppppatrikkkkk Whilst I agree with you mentioning Jon as the 'corporate figurehead', I don't agree with the rest of your comment. I don't think he is obsessed with being accepted in the corporate world - he is already accepted and he is already a big player. I also don't think that subtlety is an issue - I actually love how over-the-top they are. Infact, that's what always drew me to the band, from the start. What I can't stand are the boring bands who pretend to be 'subtle', only for effect.
I just wish they'd get back to being a great original strong united band and do what they used to do best. Jon, stop buying football teams and selling baby prams, reclaim the rightful rock god position you used to own. No rehashing old stuff, no more relying on your looks so millions of women buy these sub-standard albums, it used to be about the music and you had integrity - get it back. I keep buying every new record in the hopes I will regain my faith in you - please don't disappoint me.
I'm also disapointed that their new stuff sounds like they're ripping off their old stuff. We Weren't Born To Follow sounds like the chorus of Born To Be My Baby, When We Were Beautiful sounds like Springsteen's Gypsy Biker, We Got It Going On sounds like It's My Life Which sounds like Everyday which sounds like Have A Nice Day. And I remember Jon saying he never wanted to re-write Livin' On A Prayer because it had already been done.
I also think their last best album was These Days. Every other album they have bought out since may have some choice cuts, but it feels like the rest is just album filler content. I have over 600+ bootlegs of b-sides and rarities and you can hear them jam the songs into life and hear the camaraderie, not they each go in and record their 'bits' and you can feel it isn't the same.
I liked Bon Jovi better when Jon wasn't the corporate figure head. When Doc was their manager it just seemed like Jon was having more fun. Granted they toured too much, but when you look back at old video clips and interviews it was a pleasure to watch and listen to them. The only thing that has changed over the years unfortunatley is Jon. The rest of the guys are still fun to watch being interviewed and on stage, but Jon seems soulless.
I have met Richie and he is the nicest person EVER! I do believe he has a much better, more soulful voice than Jon. His solo albums prove that he can stand on his own. Jon may be the 'face' of the band, but Richie and his talent is not to be overlooked, he is the soul.
one of a rare breed of bands if the lead vocalist didnt make the gig another top bloke could stand in and the crowd would not be dissapointed step up richie and entertain
richie's got a voice for songs like this but imagine him singing songs like livin on a prayer... that wouldn't sound as great as it does when jon sings them (in my opinion)

instead of drawing comparisons,i'd rather sit and admire the diversity,i mean.. page didnt sing, neither did slash,or angus young, tony iommi..any of the great lead guitarists from the great rock bands. i thnk its a tribute to the music and ability of bon jovi that they have 2 incredible voices with songwriting talent to match!
he tries a lot to sound like jon in this vid. i heard him singing this song before and he put a lot more growl in it instead of clear tones. (please compare it to the "Jon Bon Jovi & Richi Sambora - Wanted Dead Or Alive" video on youtube) nonetheless great performance. Richi's got an amazing voice as well!!!
@pacovl46 no actually listen to bon jovi live. hes a shitbox ( not really he's actually good) but you can clearly tell its both of them together if you hear bon jovi live. its a good mix of both
@heyhowami richi always did backing vocals. they're both great singers, and voices definitely change over time. especially considering how many shows they did over 25 years!!!
During his prime Jon Bon Jovi was a technical beast with singing. Nowadays his voice has thinned a lot and he pales compared to his late '80s and early 90's singing.
Sambora also has amaing voice, and he has preserved it really well!

Sambora is, without a doubt, a better singer; Bon Jovi a better performer. Hell, Daughtry sings better than Bon Jovi. Most people take form over substance, so it doesn't surprise me that Bon Jovi is out front. You have to give these two monumental talents credit for sticking it out together all these years, now spanning generations. BTW, this is one of the five greatest rock tunes ever! Brilliant writing.
Richie has that great bluesy voice....his tone is richer than Jon's...fuller and more bottom...LOVE IT......and it doesn't help that he is so damn good-looking....
I don't think it sounds very good on six string. On the record (and most of the live versions), Ritchie plays 12 string, and I think sounds better, particularly the descending sixths on the intro.
no he isn't and jon is the singer and he always will be so there's nothing you can change about it... no bon jovi is diffinelty worse than jon bon jovi^^
I think you shouldn't compare them, they are both such good singers, musicians and composers, for gods sake, he wrote this song as well, then he might as well sing it too wich he does great of course!
Let's get real here. It's ok for Richie to sing one of the songs once in a while........ But, It would be the end of Bon Jovi if Richie started singing all the songs for them. There's a reason why Jon is the lead singer.
Richie is a better Singer then Jon, i always knew that. Jon has to stop smoking cigarettes and he needs a kick in the balls. Maybe he can sing Bed of Roses and Always with that high tune again.
I wouldn't say he's "better"... well.... nowadays he is, but in his prime Jon Bon Jovi had an incredible voice. Richie just has a much more appealing blues voice. Songs like this Richie's voice just shines like a pretty new gem.
Back in 87 though who would you rather hear sing Runaway? Or imagine Richie trying to sing Living in Sin.
That said, I prefer Richie to Jon 10 to 1. Jon is (unfortunately) a bit gimmicky, which is fine but it over shadows Richie's raw talent.
Check out The old medley of him and jon doing an acoustic Livin on a prayer goin into wanted: make sure Richie's wearing a top hat in the video and then watch it: his singing puts Jon to shame in it, and he does a far better job of it than in this video
Don't insult Richie with that comparison .. Eric is a booring singer without the same intensity in his voice .. you only get depressed when Clapton open his mouth .. and mostly when he plays guitarr too sadly.
These days Bon Jovi (incl. Richie on vox) playing every song tuned a halfstep down, over the years their voices have changed and that´s why they play all "old" songs tuned down. Easier for Jon to hit the high notes on for example always and Bed of roses! Richie doesn´t has that problem cuz his voice is still and will be always higher than Jon´s
I think Richie is great, but does he sing higher than Jon, I don't think so, check when Richie sings These days, wich he sings great, but he can't reach the lines in the chorus, he sings a different voice and somebody else sings Jon's part, really, but like I said I think Richie is just great in singing, guitarplaying and composing!
@Nesh16041972 I like both Richie and Jon's voice's . If you are talking about not hitting the notes , Whens the last time Jon sang the chores to Living on a prayer?
I have been listening to them since forever and Jon's voice totally changed after Young Guns. He doesn't have the rough ,tough voice anymore. It sounds like he got vocal lessens or something.
@alester159 I think you need to get it right. Richie IS Bon Jovi. He is one of the four lead guys. If you think he is better for the job of lead singer, then say he is better thAn Jon, not better than the band as a whole. He is one of them, so you can't make that claim at all.
@alester159 First , you mean Richie is better than Jon , Bon jovi is what they are when you put them all together. So whats the point in comparing them ? they're both great . You can't say one is better than the other. Without the other , niether would be what they are as a band. And as a band you can't top them .
he's not steve vai but no doubt he's a good instrumentalist. It's rare to see chart-topping guitarists that can do things like technical harmonics. and yeah better than that, he's a great great vocalist. but that doesn't mean he can go solo and sell multi-million. in fact he tried that once and didn't work (at least not commercially.) so it's the chemistry of the two that makes bon jovi so special.
somebody please explain to me why he even need Jon??? He does this song much better.. Has a better range of vocals... And to be honest.. Just alot more feeling in his voice... But thats just my opinion...
no its standard...maybe a half step down though, sounds really rich so it is quite possible that its a half step down
the majority of the song is really easy to learn on guitar, the intro is the hardest part...the main riff is based around D, C, G, F...so u could figure it out
I can´t agree whit you there. When I compare Richie whit Jon when they are singing it´s easy to hear that Jon sings better. I just love his voice, what more can I say? ;)
Fine!

WOW.. first time ever I hear Richie and his wonderful voice!! so so so nice!! thanks!!!!

@sandri1976 really? lol he always sings either Ill be there for u or lay ur hands on me while jon changes
theguitarguymike 10 months ago
@sandri1976 try and find his "One lead guitar" album you're in for a treat :)

Check out The old medley of him and jon doing an acoustic Livin on a prayer goin into wanted: make sure Richie's wearing a top hat in the video and then watch it: his singing puts Jon to shame in it, and he does a far better job of it than in this video

This was always Richie's song. The guitar rift is haunting. And it's all Richie!

Suprised how good singer he is. Nice!!

Richie is a very good singer, got a touch of Clapton about him I think.
JoJo72X 2 years ago 7
Don't insult Richie with that comparison .. Eric is a booring singer without the same intensity in his voice .. you only get depressed when Clapton open his mouth .. and mostly when he plays guitarr too sadly.

I have to agree with you!
Nesh16041972 2 years ago 7
He should sing more, sounds pretty good. Gotta tell John to stop hogging all the lyrics !

yep ... The guitar is tuned a half step down ...
it really fits richie to sing this song :-)
Freja6185101 2 years ago 4
These days Bon Jovi (incl. Richie on vox) playing every song tuned a halfstep down, over the years their voices have changed and that´s why they play all "old" songs tuned down. Easier for Jon to hit the high notes on for example always and Bed of roses! Richie doesn´t has that problem cuz his voice is still and will be always higher than Jon´s
MrSamborasSon 2 years ago
I think Richie is great, but does he sing higher than Jon, I don't think so, check when Richie sings These days, wich he sings great, but he can't reach the lines in the chorus, he sings a different voice and somebody else sings Jon's part, really, but like I said I think Richie is just great in singing, guitarplaying and composing!
Nesh16041972 2 years ago
@Nesh16041972 I like both Richie and Jon's voice's . If you are talking about not hitting the notes , Whens the last time Jon sang the chores to Living on a prayer?
I have been listening to them since forever and Jon's voice totally changed after Young Guns. He doesn't have the rough ,tough voice anymore. It sounds like he got vocal lessens or something.

Richie IS Way Better Then Bon Jovi

@alester159 Learn to spell.
DancinJim 1 year ago
@alester159 I think you need to get it right. Richie IS Bon Jovi. He is one of the four lead guys. If you think he is better for the job of lead singer, then say he is better thAn Jon, not better than the band as a whole. He is one of them, so you can't make that claim at all.
topbidder1963 1 year ago
@alester159 they are both good you cant have favorites they are both rock gods
slashangus123 1 year ago
@alester159 First , you mean Richie is better than Jon , Bon jovi is what they are when you put them all together. So whats the point in comparing them ? they're both great . You can't say one is better than the other. Without the other , niether would be what they are as a band. And as a band you can't top them .

Check out Phil Baril's cover of this song on Youtube, it's awesome, and played on a 12 string!
flcracker9 2 years ago
he's not steve vai but no doubt he's a good instrumentalist.

DISMISSED375 2 years ago
no its standard...maybe a half step down though, sounds really rich so it is quite possible that its a half step down
the majority of the song is really easy to learn on guitar, the intro is the hardest part...the main riff is based around D, C, G, F...so u could figure it out
hiddenbase 2 years ago
might sound that rich just because it seems to be an all-koa guitar =)
ippusor 2 years ago
the intro isnt hard at all, you just need to get your fingers in a certain postion

Richie sings MUCH better than Jon these days and he was always singing the high harmonies.
ltsmash1200 2 years ago
I can´t agree whit you there. When I compare Richie whit Jon when they are singing it´s easy to hear that Jon sings better. I just love his voice, what more can I say? ;)
