@PemaOzer I have two B.A.'s from a University and a lot of customer service experience, and have not even been called for an interview after applying for several Star Bucks in my home town of Tucson AZ, P.S., I do not know how I could have not passed their online assessment test as I have a degree in Social Psych and partially have done research on designing these tests. WTF, I know with the economy it is an employers market, but what do you need just to get an interview at the local Star Bucks
I'm imagining that this girl doesn't have the luxury of finding a new job - she probably HAS to after posting this. If only she hadn't worn that apron and hat...
First off Starbucks is a joke..... They take approx. 115.00 a month out of your check for insurance and people make about minimum wage so do the math at 20 hrs a week... And they cater to the bitchest spoiled customers on the planet.... Sorry anyone that orders a skinny vanilla latter with a 1/4 pack of Splenda, extra stirred, needs punched in the fucking mouth!!! Worst place to work!!
i work at starbucks. people keep bitching at me of all people for the high prices and its not as though i could explain to them that howard shultz just got a 60mil bonus. i make minimum wage for christ sake. im not the source of the greed. as for a job, its really one of the better food/retail places to be at.
I work for Starbucks.....have for 9 years. Get a different job if you hate it so much......or is Starbucks the only company out there that's "not as shitty as the others?"
BIG corporations + BIG profits+ screw everyone! (all but the execs and big shareholders...but still general public love the place.....why? they are souless inside and no a place I want to hang out at ...
Well Starbucks is a corporation, like all others. The fact that they offer benefits to their employees for 20 hours a week of work (average, of course) is remarkable and simply beyond what many others offer. People always want more. Give a mouse a cookie.....
Starbucks is a responsible corporation. Just because only one of their coffees is certified FAIRTRADE doesn't mean it's not fairly traded. Fairtrade is an organization, but Starbucks have their own, called Shared Planet which has very similar criteria. A barista is a job, not a career. If you don't enjoy it, then go to school. If you do enjoy it and don't mind the lower pay, then good for you. America is the only industrialized country without universal healthcare, is that Starbucks fault?
Wtf. Really asst mgrs and mgrs get great benefits. The partner pay portion of insurance is actually very reasonable. It's a part time job, benefits like ins and vacation are given by companies to secure a workers talents. Not that tough to sling coffee you don't need a brilliant mind or much education so they don't need to offer tons of benefits. Why do people think showing up for entry level jobs earns you the right to full benefits.
Go work for the local coffee shop and see how shitty you
If you look into things more, you will see that a lot of this is false.
And Fair Trade? Are people aware that it costs money to put the title "Fair Trade" onto any product?? Yeah. So, the money put toward those costs is money that is being taken away from farmers. So yes, Starbucks has 1 'Fair Trade' coffee, but it is ALL their coffee ethically grown and the farmers are given everything. :) Let's get our facts write before we get our panties in a bunch!
@beauty4himlove Sorry I have to disagree with the Fair Trade logo meaning money is taken away from the framers, this is untrue, the price of the product increases not the wage the farmers receive as to have a Fair Trade logo the producers, or farmers in this case, most earn a certain percentage from the product.
All the money they make goes to the management and owners of the company, they are the ones making all the money, not the people who are doing all the hard work, the farmers, the ones making the coffee, etc.
@Pinacolada024 indecent? explain please cause if any customer anywhere has a complaint, the manager usually takes care of it----unless of course its the store here in this crummy little town then anyway the employees treat the customers is ok.
@LibrarianKay Actually, I just think that if she wants the benefits that people get from a full time job that takes a degree, she should get a degree and then work somewhere that isn't mainly part time teenagers and 1st year college students.
@mwl3175 Therere's two problems with that idea, though.
1. We're still in the middle of the worst jobs market of (most of) our lifetime. A degree is no longer the assurance of a full time job with benefits that it once was. Even if it was, there's still...
2. Someone has to do it. Someone has to serve your coffee, make your cheeseburgers, wash your car, et cetera. If you think all of those jobs can be filled by teenagers and 1st year college students, think again.
@LibrarianKay It costs 20K to open up a coffee shop. I've seen it done for 2K.
I'm privileged in having responsible parents who came to this country in 1993 with $170 to their name. My father washed dishes with a Ph.D. until he improved his English to get a teaching job.
Certain native born americans are some of the laziest, irresponsible, and infantile people I've seen. That would be OK if their feeling of entitlement wasn't through the roof. Pool resources and create your own economic reality
@martydrooo That's all fine and good. You should be proud of your parents, and what they managed to accomplish. Equal effort does not always mean equal rewards. It's very possible to run yourself ragged in search any work at all and find nothing. Having people you can "pool resources" with in your life, or the opportunity to start a business, are good things, but not having them isn't necessarily a failure. Telling someone to simply abandon a job that treats them unfairly isn't always realistic.
@LibrarianKay I am thankful and proud, always. I don't think the whole "just quit and get another job" is a productive or positive thing to say, per say. I don't say things like that to people. Although, if Starbucks couldn't find anyone to work in crappy conditions, they'd have to pay more/treat better. That doesn't pay today's bills, however. Using your brain always yields more than using brawn, so quantifying effort is hard to do. I'm just saying people should work towards something better.

being honest i m totally agree with this starbucks partner,, specially in starbucks so called doing business ethically and be a fair trade business partner is completely bullshit !!,,StarFucks SUCKS!!
Wow. Then quit. The company has given it's employees an exceptional work condition and benefits, and you still complain. Welcome to retail; Howard is doing and has done the best he can. If you have issues, take that up with your manager and district manager instead of bashing the company entirely. I'm sure with your ungrateful attitude, you will have the "real story" for any company you work for. I'm a barista (not shift) of 5 years living comfortably on my own with Starbucks as my only income.
@piedownjoe So, You are either an, "I am Sam" like the movie, or a Yes Man or Woman for Your job! Just one question; Are you simply a Barista or an Assistant Manager or store Manager?; as I assume you must live very humble even with full time wages and benefits; you probably make less than $11.00 an hour on average! Not Bashing Star Bucks, however, in all respect to the top management you are probably disposible like anyone, especially in todays economy who questions the man!
all the people commenting about her needing to quit and go get another job and stop complaining, where do you suggest she get a job? there's not really an easy shoe-in these days. the people who work at starbucks and are happy with it should share their stories on here, and that's awesome. it really just depends on where you work specifically.
I've never been in a real Starbucks and have seen them wear hats with stupid stuff on them, I've only sen that at those Starbucks that are IN other stores, like target, or casinos. If she doesn't like it, then why doesn't she quit and find another job? Duh! And you probably wouldn't have a problem with hours if you were good at your job and your manager liked you. And Starbucks isn't a franchise, so it's not like McDonald's, and they don't sell clothes or groceries, so it's not like Walmart.
Remember when everyone knew Starbucks was an evil company that lied to people and movies made fun of them for it? Yeah, it's still the same company. Don't buy their stuff if you don't like it. If you do, don't pretend they have the publics best interest in mind.
wow talk about white people problems... she thinks HER job is bad... she has no idea, people in different country's would literally KILL someone to be in her position.
I've been at Starbucks for over a year and I love it. Also they have awesome insurance ask anybody but this lady. I honestly don't know about the coffee farmers but everything else is not true or current.
So sad, why don't you take a gander at the people sitting on the site of the street outside of your starbucks? Be happy with what you have and that starbucks can give employment to millions of people. They do what they must to stay in business.
I worked part time at Starbucks to get benefits while working another job and trying to climb the latter. When I was finally eligible, the benefits were too expensive. It's a sham.
I worked for SB for 4 years. I'm not going to lie, the job itself is irritating, but I needed something to pay my bills as I worked through undergrad. You only have to work 20 hours a week to be eligible for benefits. With the schedule flexibility of Starbucks, that's an easy amount of hours to work.. If you are a single person, the cost of insurance isn't bad. You might have to get the cheap plan, which provides good coverage, but it's better than what you get at most places.
You must be working at a terrible store, I'm a barista at an incredibly busy store and my manager goes out of his way to get us the hours we want without hassling us or letting us down. The environment and my fellow partners are amazing. Strong dislike on this one. Quit if you can't handle it.
As a Starbucks barista, I can honestly say it's the best job I've ever had. I mean, I'm only 20, yet I've been working since I was 14. I work right in downtown Seattle and all the stores I work at have been wonderful on so many levels. Managers have tried their hardest to get me the hours I need/desire. Sure, the insurance rates are costly, but at least they provide the opportunity to their employees.
As far as companies go, Starbucks is far better than the majority
I work at starbucks, and yes it sucks. Just like every other service industry job. Low pay? Yes we get low pay, just like every other service industry job. Too much work? YES! just like every other service industry job. Little to no appreciation? YES! just like every other job. Starbucks isn't the big bad coffee house, its just another global company.... only with better health benefits.
@Hidepride ALSO, Starbucks lets your life partner.... or even long term boy/girlfriend be claimed on your health insurance. My dad is a manager at local car dealership that he has been with for ten years, he pays 375 bucks a month for vision, dental and health insurance for myself, my mother and him. If he worked 20 hours a week at starbucks and got the exact same plan for the three of us, he would pay 125- we checked.
I work at starbucks in Wyoming. And I pay $50 a month for medical, dental, vision and life insurance. And after working a year for starbucks they give you shares that you can do whatever u want. I love the job and we give the best customer service in town. All the partners work together to help each other out. We've never had a problem with customers and we make alot of tips. I have no idea why she's saying all this n what she's talking about. Starbucks takes really care of their partners.
I work for Starbucks in Los Angeles and have never had any problems like this. I pay $50 a month for medical dental and vision!! At my old job I was paying $80 with no vision!! Insurance policies ALL have deductibles and co-pays. Even when I was on my parents plan as a young adult I paid. I also have never had a problem with my scheduling. My managers are awesome and I know all of them in my district. I frequently get offered overtime to come help at their stores. Idk what she's talking about!!!
I think it really depends on where you work, and some things are run improperly by some managers, not by every manager. Managers who are 'making people work overtime unpaid' arent allowed to, and should have been reported. problem solved. Also, yes, my health insurance is over $60, so the prices of insurance DID go up, surprise. Many of the complaints I see in the comments and in this video however, are on the manager, not the company itself.
I used to work at starbucks...and i used to close the store and we needed to be out by 10:00. We had to clean stocck etc etc....if he didnt finish what we needed to do by 10:00 we signed out like if we were going home but we didnt we had to stay late to finish doin what we were suppose to do. In this case i have lost over 300.00 worth of over time :/
LOL a real barista has decent knowledge of coffees!, proper milk steaming of microfoam and the differences of real coffee drinks! plus they use their senses and techniques of operating a manual machine. grinding, tamping beans by using their knowledge. Call starbucks a barista? well although i work for them as well. I just consider myself a worker. not a barista.
@simpcalo Yea, they know. That's why they said being a barista at Starbucks is a joke because you aren't actually a barista working there. If all you're doing is pressing buttons and don't understand how to adjust and weight out the grind of your espresso, then you have no place to call yourself a barista. Mixing syrups and milk with automated coffee machines doesn't require training. Knowing how to properly pull a shot of espresso does. Or knowing how to properly steam milk.
@ruox54 Just like everyone other corporation/business. They can charge whatever they want, if you're not happy, learn how to make your own drinks or go to fucking Timmies.

Everyone should support the organizing campaign of the Starbucks Union. Union representation is the only means working people have to defend their rights in the workplace...without unions, workers are totally at the mercy of management. No one should ever be powerless in the place where they spend most of their waking hours.
uhm...when I worked for Starbucks I was part time and I could afford the insurance, and my schedule was flexible because I had another job (which they already knew hiring me and made sure that they weren't conflicting the schedules...THEY did that, my managers.) I guess essentially I'm like "if you don't like the way you think Starbucks is doing something, get another job...or open your own coffee company". That's the REAL story.

Yeah none of this shit is true! I hope that people realize that this is not TRUE and don't believe her. Starbucks is a great company, I have been with them for three years and love it. We all get treated very well.
O noes record profits!! Shareholders take the risk so they reap the rewards. Did you forget about your stock options? Sell some of those if you want to offset the cost of healthcare. Which b.t. dubs you indirecty increased when you voted for Obama (dont even try to act like you didnt) Why do you deserve more than a days pay for your days work exactly? Fucking ingrate. Not only do you get paid a fair wage but you get tips to the tune of $1+/hr (that you dont claim) Fucking socialist pig.
@hgmda9 The profits are always due to the work of the employees and the patronage of the customers. What the shareholders do, by comparison, is trivial. And it's disgusting that both the shareholders AND the banks essentially caused this recession by demanding that businesses impose mass layoffs.
BTW, in a democracy, you have the right to vote for who and what you want and no one should ever face retribution for their votes. Most people wouldn't be better off if McCain had won.
WOW! This bitch must be one of those who doesn't get along with her manager and her manager can't get rid of her because she threatens lawsuit for wrongful termination. FUCKING BITCH!!!
And, although we need more Fair Trade certification, just because a coffee isn't certified doesn't mean FT beans weren't used for part of the blend. On a completely different note, wearing your apron when you're not working like that is a violation of company policy...
Although this video is two years out of date, it's still mostly hogwash. I don't believe for a second the stuff about farmers in Ethiopia, because I know firsthand about how Starbucks treats farmers in Rowanda. Also, it's amazingly simple to come by enough hours for health insurance, and if $40 a check is too much, you've got problems, because that's freaking ridiculously cheap.
@hisbassness Insurance is cheap IF you are paying for just yourself. As a single mom I'm paying $80. That adds up to $360 a month. And it is true that it is hard to maintain hours depending on where you live. Some Starbucks have a consistent flow of customers throughout the year. But many more have high and low seasons that are so drastically different that there are too many employees that remain of the roster during the low seasons.
@hisbassness The inconsistent hours also affects me in getting any gov't benefits such as medicaid or food stamps. They should at least guarantee us a reasonable amount of hours if the benefits gotta cost so much. I mean, think about how much $360 could benefit a struggling single mom.
the benefits were some of the best, the work is fun and there more than just 1 Fair Trade coffee... I loved my job there. this chick is lame and ignorant
Instead of spouting off bullshit claims without providing any sources to any of your claims, shouldn't your first concern be the egregiously low pay employees get? It's quite ridiculous. $7.35 is not a livable, even if you get tips (which are minimal).
"There's only 1 certified fair trade coffee at starbucks out of the 16 varieties they carry..."
Um, there are like 36 different coffees, not counting limited editions and seasonal offerings. Starbucks pays fair trade prices on most of their coffees, even if they are not "certified" fair trade. She fake barista If she is, she should be canned... Cafe Estima, Espresso Roast, Pike Place, and a few others were all fair traide at the time this video was published. Labor stuff ALL TRUE
if you dont like it QUIT!!! don't complain about these lies shoved into your head. I don't generally judge people but from watching this video you remind me of the girl in high school that would walk around with her friends talking about how mad she is and how bad she wants to hurt somebody but can never do it. There are millions of people who want your job. So if you quit and find a job "suitable to you" you'll make us all happy
Are you serious!?! You really should find something better to do with your life!! I have (much like almost all the partners I know) never worked for a better company in my life. How dare you try to bash a company that even when it was being pressure to cut benefits remained true to its belief in it's core values. You are a spoiled little brat that should go out in the world and see what it is like to work for any of the many horrible companies out there. Get a life!!!
"Ohh my retail job, one so simple a monkey could do it, DOES give me benefits.. but I want to complain about something!" Get a different job then, if yours is so terrible. Starbucks is the best job I've ever had. It's so easy to get enough hours for insurance too: Just go to other stores to pick up shifts if necessary.
Yeah I dont think 90% of this is true, I have worked there since 2006 and yes it's not a great company and I do pretty much hate my job and most of the customers but starbucks pretty much bends over backwards to give you a schedule that works.
She is completely lying about everything and one of the best things about working at Starbucks is there scheduling they have given me the hours I need and time off on the days I need it consistently
I newly out of high school and only paying 60 dollars for full health insurance and aflac! It's very cheap and you only have to work 20 hours a week to get full benefits. This lady doesn't know what's up, she's probably just has a mean store manager or something that she's taking it out on. Who the hell would let her stand outside her store and bash her company?? No one. Fake!
Oh and "high deductibles" my ass. I pay just $5 out of each paycheck for vision coverage, and I only had to pay $60 for a pair of glasses that would have cost over $400. My $1000 prescription only costs $20 for three months. And I don't have co-payments when I go to the doctor. Nevermind, I forgot that your coworkers can't get into work more than two days a week. (As if ANY employer would hire someone who is available less than 20 hours a week.)
Who the hell "struggles" to maintain 20 hours a week? And oh wow $90 a month for complete insurance...total that for a year, it's still less than half the average amount people under 35 spend on premiums. Oh and you forgot to mention that, unlike buying direct from the company, they do not even ask about let alone deny or charge more for "pre-existing conditions." Good luck finding another job that will give full benefits to part-time workers, let alone those without college degrees. Quit lying.
Starbucks does indeed suck. The supervisors are jerks and I tried complaining about my crappy training to the person above them, but turns out they were best friends so I had the supervisor give me shit for it. The only way you're gonna have a great time at Starbucks is if you're a supervisor. You can treat your employees like shit. I mean, what are they gonna do,fire you?
@bealtespip123 That sucks that this happened to you. However there are a few things against Starbucks policy here. The store manager should not be best friends with a supervisor as it is a violation of policy for them to hang out, outside of work. Anyone not treating you with respect is in violation of policy and should be reported to business compliance immediately, that is a number available to anyone to prevent such things from happening. Sounds like that store needs some help.
@bealtespip123, Did you just go to your manager? Or did you try going to your district manager? I feel bad for you if you really had such a bad experience. I love my job, store, partners and manager.
Hah.. If you really worked for Starbucks they would FIRE you for doing this stupid video. I am a Shift Supervisor at Starbucks and NONE of this is true.. You need to give your friend back that apron.... BECAUSE it is NOT yours orrrr... you just got fired and want to get back at the company...
Why do you have to lie like this?? Starbucks is a great company, health benefits, scheduling, and other benefits too... Starbucks is the #1 purchaser of Fair Trade coffee, so i don't know where you are getting your "information" from, but do some better research....
Well... what other retail job do you know of that offers any benefits to part-time employees? Let alone stock options and weekly mark outs. And as a former manager for another retailer the rates are far cheaper 40 bi-weekly compared to 70 bi-weekly, and the co-pays are very reasonable. Now as for fair trade coffee... Starbucks is the #1 purchaser of FAIR TRADE coffee world wide.
Look, if you are not happy there, then go find a better job. Either way, I like the taste of their coffee and lattes, and that's all that matters to me. If another cafe can offer me a better flavored coffee or latte at a comparable price, then I will go there. But corporations do not have a social responsibility, they ultimately have to deliver profits to their shareholders. Maybe you should quite since you are obviously not happy there.
coming from a Starbucks employee, I can tell you none of this is true!

So yes, Starbucks has 1 'Fair Trade' coffee, but it is ALL their coffee ethically grown and the farmers are given everything. :) Let's get our facts write before we get our panties in a bunch!
beauty4himlove 1 month ago
@beauty4himlove Sorry I have to disagree with the Fair Trade logo meaning money is taken away from the framers, this is untrue, the price of the product increases not the wage the farmers receive as to have a Fair Trade logo the producers, or farmers in this case, most earn a certain percentage from the product.

@LibrarianKay Actually, I just think that if she wants the benefits that people get from a full time job that takes a degree, she should get a degree and then work somewhere that isn't mainly part time teenagers and 1st year college students.
mwl3175 1 month ago

Pool resources and create your own economic reality
martydrooo 1 month ago

Idk what she's talking about!!!
rachellabella333 4 months ago
I think it really depends on where you work, and some things are run improperly by some managers, not by every manager. Managers who are 'making people work overtime unpaid' arent allowed to, and should have been reported. problem solved. Also, yes, my health insurance is over $60, so the prices of insurance DID go up, surprise. Many of the complaints I see in the comments and in this video however, are on the manager, not the company itself.

@hgmda9 The profits are always due to the work of the employees and the patronage of the customers. What the shareholders do, by comparison, is trivial. And it's disgusting that both the shareholders AND the banks essentially caused this recession by demanding that businesses impose mass layoffs.

hisbassness 5 months ago
Although this video is two years out of date, it's still mostly hogwash. I don't believe for a second the stuff about farmers in Ethiopia, because I know firsthand about how Starbucks treats farmers in Rowanda. Also, it's amazingly simple to come by enough hours for health insurance, and if $40 a check is too much, you've got problems, because that's freaking ridiculously cheap.
hisbassness 5 months ago
@hisbassness Insurance is cheap IF you are paying for just yourself. As a single mom I'm paying $80. That adds up to $360 a month. And it is true that it is hard to maintain hours depending on where you live. Some Starbucks have a consistent flow of customers throughout the year. But many more have high and low seasons that are so drastically different that there are too many employees that remain of the roster during the low seasons.
meatstickk 5 months ago
@hisbassness The inconsistent hours also affects me in getting any gov't benefits such as medicaid or food stamps. They should at least guarantee us a reasonable amount of hours if the benefits gotta cost so much. I mean, think about how much $360 could benefit a struggling single mom.

Dumb bitch.... I'm a proud barista, and love what Starbucks does for me. If ya don't like it, GTFO!!

@bealtespip123 Sucks when you go to Starbucks & there's a long line of 13 year old girls. Shouldn't they be drinking Capri Sun?
powerofone321 7 months ago
