Im pretty sure Hiway Market closed in 1987, possibly 88. I remember after it had been closed I was around 10 years old. My friends and I snuck into the empty store, Just as it was being gutted. We explored the whole place. I remember specifically the record store, there was still some old records left behind and posters, wish I would have known to keep some of those posters. I also remember the secret passageways around the perimeter of the record store, I guess to catch shoplifters.
Yup, HiWay Market is but a fond memory for poeple of my generation. Gone are the creaky wooden floors, the enormous conveyor belt from the parking lot level to the main level, the escalator up to the toys. *sigh*
I remember always seeing the Hi-Way Market commercials during "The Flinstones" that always was on at 12:00pm, followed by "Agri-News". As far as I know, the Hi-Way Market closed down in the 90s or maybe even the late 80s. Thanks for posting this.
OH MY GOD!!!!! I had these toys!!! I still remember the night we went to HiWay to get them We didn't have the house but we did have the characters and the Flintmobile. Thank you so, SO much for this. You literally just brought back a flood of memories!
That's quite a memory! Sounds very special. I've had similar 'floods' myself, so I know what it is like to have such things come rushing back in an instant!

HiWay Market has been gone for a very long time. Agreed it was a wonderful, magical store. They don't make places like that anymore :(

There was only 1.
In Kitchener. Not far from where the Volkswagen dealership is on Weber St.

I think HiWay Market is now where the Zehr's is. I could be wrong, I haven't been there in a while.
