  • Such a beautiful piece performed by talented musicians!

  • Not to worry, as a result of Mormon's vicarious works for the dead, I am sure they have converted him posthumously!

  • @mrchorn2 : Yeah, well, except for the fact that LDS Mormons don't believe vicarious works for the dead have converted anyone posthumously, that's pretty funny!

  • @rippinsteo Unfortunately, I no longer have access to a copy of McConkie's "Mormon Doctrine" but I remain confident that a thorough review of that work would validate my previous assertion. The entire premise of Mormon's baptism for the dead, is that they are preforming an essential element of their dogma required to reach the platinum-cardholder version of their afterlife, for individuals that either rejected or died before Smith restored his version of the archaic Christian church.

  • @mrchorn2: Thanks for your reply. Although it unfortunately has been treated as such, McConkie’s “Mormon Doctrine” is NOT an official source of LDS Mormon doctrine that is binding upon church membership for belief and practice. The salient point of baptism for the dead is to give those who are dead the option to accept or reject the ordinance. The mere performance of the ordinance does not convert nor force anyone who is dead to be or become a Mormon. Merry Christmas.

  • I don't really know what Handel would have intended for the most part, but I'm pretty sure he'd have converted to Mormonism at some point if he could've. But that's just one man's opinion.

  • Wonderful!

  • what key is this in?

  • @TheTomBales A Major

  • Que coral maravilhoso !

  • why are they so much better than everyone else?

  • Is that pipe organ real? Is it operational?

  • @Sen957 The pipe organ is real and operational-all seven thousand six hundred plus pipes.

  • @Sen957 Yes, it is operational, I sang there im 2007 (not with that choir but in that venue). It's magnificent

  • The Mormon Tabernacle Choir is the best! I am not LDS either....:)

  • In general I don't like big choirs singing this piece. I just listened to a thoroughly horrible performance by Robert Shaw and the Atlanta Symphony (on You Tube). They were slow, ponderous and completely lacking in finesse. However, I've got to say, for a choir this size I was pleasantly surprised at the elegance and lightness of the piece. A perfect tempo and they sang it with power and energy without going over the top. Well done.

  • this is BEAUTIFUL. that's all that matters.

  • I don't really see why the size of the choir or orchestra affects the interpretation of the piece. When they are in tune, they sound as one anyway. Just fuller. I believe Handel would have been impressed!

  • Grew up listening to this choir!!! A true MONSTER in choral music!!!

  • STOP it with all the NEGATIVE! Good grief. Just enjoy it for what it is. Not what is ISN"T.....

  • We do know what Handel intended from are knowledge of the time, the instruments he used in his compositions, the vocal lines, his and his colleagues writings from that time, and from our basic knowledge of what an oratorio . This is not what he intended at all, and does not match what would have been heard. However, it is a great performance and can always be appreciated as a new interpretation no matter how historically inaccurate! :D From one musicologist to the rest

  • Intended or not, if you had the world's best choir you'd perform this in public as well. I'm not LDS but this choir is still the greatest musical group on the planet hands down

  • Lol! Well, I don't know what Handel might have intended seeing as he is long dead... but I do know that when my school choir (grades 7-12, mandatory) sang this, we had less than 30 people and we sounded awesome! We sing the The Hallejuah Chorus every Christmas too.

  • The incomparable Mormon Tabernacle Choir performs sections of the Messiah exactly as Handel intended. The Orchestra on Temple Square is no less effective in presenting this great masterpiece.

  • @AceCokeBuster Sorry, but it's just ridiculous to say that Handel intended 360 voices and 100 instruments. That's not the same as saying that this is bad; it's just NOT what Handel intended.

  • @azormage Agreed that we don't know what Handel intended. However, we do know that when he wrote it he kept the voicing and instrumentation simple compared to what he could have wrote. This was due to the fact that he would be premiering it in Dublin, Ireland were the resources for performers was much more scarce compared to London.

  • the heavenly MTC performing one of the best known pieces of the greatest oratorio ever Handel´s Messiah. SUBLIME AND CELESTIAL

  • and the mouth of the lord has spooooken it! luv that part at the end!!!

  • And the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it

together: for the mouth of the Lord hath spoken it. (Isaiah 40:5)

I do love Mormon Tabernacle Choir, so amazing.

  • What an amazing choir! The power of all those voices is tremendous! Thank you Mormon Tabernacle Choir!

  • Acts 7:55-56
