I remember as a kid, my family never missed a John Denver Special. When he hit the charts, My older brother save his paper route money and bought a rosewood 6-string Guild almost like JDs, from a priest in our church. After a while, he could play most of JDs songs. He was 13 at the time, hes 53 now and still has that guitar. It has the prettiest tone. The man may have looked a little geeky, but he had the pipes and could play. RIP
in Australia, it's the 11th of October, but tommorow I will be away all day. So today, I'm listening to all of his music, and all the videos.
Tonight, I'm going to have a campfire, and I'm gonna get my guitar out and play this song. I picked the instrument up because of two people- My Dad and John Denver.
He died when I was only 9, but he has had an impact on my whole life.
@Daisy8007 - it's written from the point of view of an old man who's nearing the end. He's reflecting that all in all, things have been pretty good, although like most us he's got a few regrets. The good times cancel them out though. I learnt to play this especially to play at my dad's funeral. He's still with us but I'm not sure how I'll go when the time comes.
I so wish you could have grown old instead of dying young. I don't understand why good people have to leave us this way. I can't believe it's been 15 years. You left the world a better place and will live forever through your music. I cherish the memory of coming to see you in an outdoor concert with my toddler and infant in tow. You lovingly acknowledged the squeeling and crying in the audience with grace and humor. We miss you John.
I think it's funny how he took out the marijuana reference in this "While all my friends and my old sit and pass the pipe around" was "ait and watch the sun go down." HA.
He's not talking about planning on dying, he's talking about being thankful for all of his experiences, I don't think he'd be talking about committing suicide on a muppets show.
@MzRainbowConnection John's body will one day live and come back to us again right here in real life forever and ever, someday!!! :) :) :) Well, that's true.
@annettemarie1969 This was the first video I watched after John died and it's innocence and charm moved me to tears. I hadn't seen it when it was showed on the Muppets, it's enchanting. I always say that I was so lucky to have lived through the 70s and witnessed the whole John Denver phenomenon, he was the 70s to me.
awesome song hey I thought you knew how to fly this thing... everybody dies but not everyone really lives life is tough get a helmet...and have fun!!!!!
@jayepaws I know that it It turns me on to think of growing young, you'll forever and ever be young again, as I know that you don't only live once, you only live forever and ever as your body and soul will both stay alive forever and ever for a lot of decades, centuries, milleniums and years, and your body will survive forever and ever after the 31st century as to say that yes, there's forever and ever gonna be another 1996-2010-present and just thank god that we'll keep reliving 1996-2011!!!
I wish today's hollywood and music scene wasn't so infected by degenerates. Its wonderful and refreshing to stop and take a breath and look at this kind of way of life again.
I loved this song so much when I was 17 or so. Now I'm in my midforties, have a very diffucult time and feel so comforted by this song and this video. Some of my very dearest friends from my youth want to help me now.
Thank you, J.D., the Muppets, everyone how made this beautiful video and to you, angusyoung111.
In this moment I feel this video was made long time ago just to help me today.
@Clothos60 I know that it It turns me on to think of growing young, you'll forever and ever be young again, as I know that you don't only live once, you only live forever and ever as your body and soul will both stay alive forever and ever for a lot of decades, centuries, milleniums and years, and your body will survive forever and ever after the 31st century as to say that yes, there's forever and ever gonna be another 1996-2010-present and just thank god that we'll keep reliving 1996-2011!!!
@COWBOYMACLEOD That is so true. This life is only temporal. Regret looks back worry looks ahead but faith looks up. John Denver is not gone that is the thing we need to get out of our minds. he is in the next phase as a larve in the water becomes a beautiful dragon fly. we are all on the same and wonderful journey to Heaven.
@mikewarmblood Well, I rest my case about being on the same and wonderful journey to Heaven, because I'll never belong in heaven, and I'm never gonna be in the next phase as a larve in the water becomes a beautiful dragon fly, because for a lot of decades, centuries, milleniums and years, both my body and soul is gonna live forever & ever for a thosand years as I'll keep roping calves forever & ever at the NFR, Mo'betta, Calgary Stampede & many other rodeos and open ropings in the US and Canada
@mikewarmblood I'll still be alive and around forever and ever in the 100th century as I'll still be roping calves in the rodeo forever and ever as after the 100th century, there's still forever and ever gonna be another 1996-2010-present and just thank god that we'll keep reliving 1996-2011!!! I wanna say is that you don't only live once, you only live forever and ever, understood, so I'll never be in heaven, you know that, I'll never be in heaven as I'll be glad to stay alive roping forever
@208DyOnna I know that it It turns me on to think of growing young, you'll forever and ever be young again, as I know that you don't only live once, you only live forever and ever as your body and soul will both stay alive forever and ever for a lot of decades, centuries, milleniums and years, and your body will survive forever and ever after the 31st century as to say that yes, there's forever and ever gonna be another 1996-2010-present and just thank god that we'll keep reliving 1996-2011!!!
My all time favorite John Denver song b/c it so closely reflects my own feelings about life. Even on the bad days it helps me remember all the good things I have to be thankful for.
I like how they changed the "pass the pipe around" lyrics for a kid's show.
If oldies are all you know about John, then you have missed best. He wrote some of his best after the disc jockeys and radio stations wouldn't play his music. There is a very funny campfire scene before this where JD tells a scary story about a giant maneating chicken! You just gotta see it! It is very funny.
@rtiffanytaylor Maybe he knew it and that's why he wrote this song like that.... He doesn't look very old in this video! In his 30s or 40s only I would guess!
How rewarding it is to see this performance once again!! I can now lay my head down upon my pillow to rest...with thoughts of this to base my dreams upon. Many thanks for sharing this treasure!
LOLOLOL.. yes i know i do.. LOL.. but well i just cannot help it.. i do.. i really do love music so very much! .. but this really is one of my most favorites...LOL.. ok seriously it really is!
and i bet u wish u could sit round that campfire as much as i wish i was! i so love JD.. he puts me in a state of heaven and peace and calme and true pure blissfulness sereneness .. his songs melt my heart into!
@broadwaydude2378 -- There comes a time in everyone's life, often in their 30's or 40's, when they begin to face the prospect of their own eventual mortality (which in John Denver's own case was unforeseen and came far too early). My guess is that this song was the result of Denver's own attempts to deal with the knowledge that he would not stay young forever and would one day die. I don't think of it as *planning* or wanting to die, but as facing the reality and inevitability of death.
@OreadNYC Somewhat in line with your comment, did you know that John Denver wrote a song named "I Want to Live"? Very nice song also, listen to it. ;)
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Kindly begging your pardon, but I would neither want to have my hand up a Muppet butt (OK, save maybe as a puppeteer) nor to "pass the pipe around". If there was anything that needed to be changed in that wonderful song, that was it. Now a moderate amount of beer or wine? That's another story! :)
Still, John did reply to some critics (of "Rocky Mt. High") thus: "When I write a drug song, you'll KNOW that I've written a drug song!" :) He meant this song's lyrics innocently enough.
I love the muppets and I love this song! But why change the lyrics? I'm sure everyone in that room with their hand up a muppet butt would love to "pass the pipe around."
His music had a great deal of caring in the words. and the melodies just kind of stick with those of tender heart. If ever I was feeling low I could turn on his songs and in a few minutes I would feel better. Uplifting.
I sure do miss him. At least we have recordings.
When I learned he had died, I had the blues, deep low down blues for several days. Didn't go to work, used up my last three vacation days.
Hope to see him in the new world where his wonderful voice can sing praises to God.
I can't believe i cried, the comment about the warmth of the puppets touched me. My mom rented a hotel this night so we could see him in color, and we recorded it on cassette. I listened to this muppets tape growing up, and John tought me how to sing. I also agree with the comment he was not the same after annie and him split. I found myself in lake tahoe upon his death news, and sat around the bar in a casino singing his songs with all these women who heard that day. I sing pro now thanks to him.
john denver will always live in my heart and be my favorite singer next to elvis johns life was never the same after annie left l think it was annie his guitar and his words and music he loved so very much megs
Mom had the Poems Prayers and Promises album on 8-track (not kidding) in the 70s when I was a kid. It was a soundtrack to me then, but as an adult at the time of my life where I realize I have less time left than that which I have already lived, it helps me feel peace with my mortality.
Such a touching, bittersweet song, especially when we remember how John Denver died. Not sure what his age was in this video; was he already contemplating his death? Strange how the Muppets--those little bits of fur and foam-- can add the sense of love, and hope to this scene.
I'd really like to thank you for posting this... My family is going through a rather rough time right now, with the inevitable loss of a dear loved one...
It was a beautiful song, sung only the way John Denver could sing it...
The Muppets, in their own inimitable way, lend a more light- hearted theme to this song...
I'm finally really setting down and relaxing so it was time to watch the video's you sent. This one first John Denver was always one of my favorite's!!! Thanks!! Cherri
i'm glad your getting to settle down and relax, cherri. before i was kicked-out of med school i would advise patients to breathe into a brown paper bag when stressed. that could be why i was kicked-out of med school!!! (just kidding)
a wonderful song, indeed! i suppose the original lyrics wouldn't quite work for a children's show! the focus on the family folks would scream that he was trying to turn all their kids into stoners. i was surprised he was even able to keep the "i've known my lady's pleasures" line in!
john denver...what can i say...when i was 5 i heard "thank god im a country boy" and loved it...then as i got older i listened to and understood more songs by him...this one, along with "rocky mtn high" are my 2 fave 2 sing at karaoke...i can say he is the artist that inspired me to become the songwriter i am today, and have been since i was 9...he will be missed
When I think of how dark this world seems at times, I think of how John Denver provided so much light. It is indeed a much darker world with him gone.
best part is at 2:06 makes no sense haha

Aren't we all?

@broadwaydude2378 -- There comes a time in everyone's life, often in their 30's or 40's, when they begin to face the prospect of their own eventual mortality (which in John Denver's own case was unforeseen and came far too early). My guess is that this song was the result of Denver's own attempts to deal with the knowledge that he would not stay young forever and would one day die. I don't think of it as *planning* or wanting to die, but as facing the reality and inevitability of death.

@OreadNYC Somewhat in line with your comment, did you know that John Denver wrote a song named "I Want to Live"? Very nice song also, listen to it. ;)

angusyoung111 is right, country music is the sound of every one's life and experience...a sort of philosophy!

High") thus: "When I write a drug song, you'll KNOW that I've written a drug song!" :) He meant this song's lyrics innocently enough.
rakkav 3 years ago
I love the muppets and I love this song! But why change the lyrics? I'm sure everyone in that room with their hand up a muppet butt would love to "pass the pipe around."

Because this was part of a family show. I remember this too. It was the first time I fell in love with Denver before I saw his christmas special

One of my favorite John Denver songs. He sang it here so beautifully. His music touches my soul. Wish we still had him around with us.
1flylikeaneagle1 3 years ago 7

This is from about 1982 or '83. John was about 39 or 40 here.

I'd really like to thank you for posting this... My family is going through a rather rough time right now, with the inevitable loss of a dear loved one...
It was a beautiful song, sung only the way John Denver could sing it...
The Muppets, in their own inimitable way, lend a more light- hearted theme to this song...
Thank You, and God Bless!

John and the Muppets had a very special friendship. He was probably the only guest star who really became one of the muppet family.

Let's not forget Paul Williams, he had a muppet likeness and kept it at his house, and co wrote the songs for the muppet movie

a wonderful song, indeed! i suppose the original lyrics wouldn't quite work for a children's show! the focus on the family folks would scream that he was trying to turn all their kids into stoners. i was surprised he was even able to keep the "i've known my lady's pleasures" line in!

john denver...what can i say...when i was 5 i heard "thank god im a country boy" and loved it...then as i got older i listened to and understood more songs by him...this one, along with "rocky mtn high" are my 2 fave 2 sing at karaoke...i can say he is the artist that inspired me to become the songwriter i am today, and have been since i was 9...he will be missed

When I think of how dark this world seems at times, I think of how John Denver provided so much light. It is indeed a much darker world with him gone.

I love that he sings "and watch the sun go down" instead of "and pass the pipe around" for this Muppet version. John Denver's the coolest!

As much as I like Denver's music and songs, that line really bothers me. I lose a little respect for him because of it.
