I was keen to play this awhile ago, and when it was P2P it was only like $5 for 60 days. I was so close to buying it, however i think i'll just wait for GW2 now, it's sorta too late for me to play it now. Especially when i download at like 200KB/Sec, and this is meant to be over 20GB...
I don't understand everyones concern with game size. Seems like many of these #'s are bloated. I downloaded high res and it was about 10 GB, updates didn't take very long so I assume they were only about 1.5 GB at most. I dl @ 1.3 mbps tops and it didn't take me but 3-4 hours. Not that big of a deal at all. Just do it before you go somewhere, or during the night. USE YOUR HEAD PEOPLE.

@070DK070 lol i didnt know for sure it just seemed to me at the time that it would benefit them. DDO used to be a sub and it tanked, then when it went f2p it got tons of people- this was while this game was still sub based and it was seeing a similar lack of players.
With LOTRO there is really a more mature basis of players (more old, less young) than to that of World of Warcraft where the young overload the old and the reason is just as gakiyarou puts in his video: storyline structure. Lotro is a breeding spot for Lore-driven role-players and that is why LOTRO is still so successful. Lotro, with its amazing extra features, allows role-playing to happen when almost every other mmo does not, yet they still have stories to drive their games.
@slatersk001 I just wish it was based on a better engine. It still astounds me how companies can release games on piss poor performing engines (cryptic is the worse by far) when other companies like NCSOFT put out games that look phenomenal and can run on a crappy laptop on max (like Aion - too bad that game sucked, it was so pretty).
@gakiyarou I can totally agree with you on that :) Apart from the lag wise that you get for trying to run this game on better performance, it is fairly well done. But yeah they really need a better engine for this game.
The reason why LOTRO is similar to Dragon Ages on the subjject of graphics is simple. It was made to be realistic (unlike WoW, not beefing on it) where the sword swings, the actual textures are made to be as simple as possible without making it impossible for people to play on high due to comp specs. As a WoW player for 4 years, DoD for 2, and also a future SWG mmo-gamer, I'll still consider LOTRO my favorite.

WoW is a very solid, well built game, with a HUGE player base. Look at it this way, everquest 1 was never even close to being as popular as WoW, and they still have a lot of subscribers!

@nikefreak01 I personally found D&D to have way to much of a learning curve in terms of how your character progresses, it works a lot like the PnP games, which I never got into. But if you really like playing D&D irl, then you will prolly like the game. The Narration in the game is really cool.
@kris10ish it is free to play, however many of the quest areas require a 1 time purchase to unlock the quests. You can however level to max using the skirmish system. Also, I have no idea if your computer is going to 'lag'. That is solely dependant on your computers specs (cpu, memory, gpu) and your internet connection. I will say that if you can run WoW on max settings then you can probably run this game at least medium.

@kris10ish I'm not familiar with ATI's cards so i dont know how that rates up, I use nvidia myself. Is your cpu multicore (2 or quad?) If its only 2-core it might be a little slow. 4 gig ram is fine.

@D3admaus well from what i played of the game (didnt make it to end game) the story of the game coincides with the books, you'll meet characters from the book just after frodo and party have moved on, and you sort of clean up the stuff they didn't get to. So in that sense yes there are spoilers, but they are minor.

@1Kaka123 first of all, if you have a firewall issue, that is your fault not the games. You'll have to go into your firewalls port forwarding settings and forward the proper ports, this is common sense with just about all MMOs. As to why it failed, you would need to be more specific. I suggest you go to the game's official forums, im not your damn tech support!

I played DDO for a few months and enjoyed it, a little too complex for someone who isn't very familiar with the D&D ruleset as it's heavily pen and paper inspired. Lotro seems a bit more laid back, and you can't go wrong with Lord of the Rings, especially since it's now F2P. In the process of downloading it now :)

No, you DON'T get to travel to whole middle-earth at all.
They are VERY slow with expanding the game, but maybe it will get better with the so called "free to play" now. Actually FREE is only the starting areas of course - to fix you up (like in all other "free" games). There is no Gondor, Rohan, Mordor in the game, maybe in 5 years - who knows. :)
Anyway, it's still a good game, but if you never played Everquest 2, I would personally recommend it OVER Lotro because its AWESOME!
guys this game is free. at first not as many players played it because it was expensive, as much as wow i think, im not sure if its better then wow or not, but it is definiteley close. take advantage of this game being free because i played the trial and it really is a cool game like wow and its free!!! big calves!

@kris10ish it is free to play, however many of the quest areas require a 1 time purchase to unlock the quests. You can however level to max using the skirmish system. Also, I have no idea if your computer is going to 'lag'. That is solely dependant on your computers specs (cpu, memory, gpu) and your internet connection. I will say that if you can run WoW on max settings then you can probably run this game at least medium.

@kris10ish I'm not familiar with ATI's cards so i dont know how that rates up, I use nvidia myself. Is your cpu multicore (2 or quad?) If its only 2-core it might be a little slow. 4 gig ram is fine.

@DontKlickMyNameMr because a lot of people have played wow, and I'm trying to let them know what I think the game feels like. Furthermore the champion plays very much like a cross between wow's rogue and warrior -- there is a rage system, and a combo point system for the class...

I tried DDO , you could see why it was free , its tacky and cheap , UI is terrible etc.

@D3admaus well from what i played of the game (didnt make it to end game) the story of the game coincides with the books, you'll meet characters from the book just after frodo and party have moved on, and you sort of clean up the stuff they didn't get to. So in that sense yes there are spoilers, but they are minor.

@1Kaka123 first of all, if you have a firewall issue, that is your fault not the games. You'll have to go into your firewalls port forwarding settings and forward the proper ports, this is common sense with just about all MMOs. As to why it failed, you would need to be more specific. I suggest you go to the game's official forums, im not your damn tech support!

@gakiyarou So gakiyarou, my TV has been having issues lately. When I turn it on, it doesn't immediately show the picture but colored bars instead, and I have to turn it on and off a few times and just wait to see if the picture clicks in, please help me out

I played DDO for a few months and enjoyed it, a little too complex for someone who isn't very familiar with the D&D ruleset as it's heavily pen and paper inspired. Lotro seems a bit more laid back, and you can't go wrong with Lord of the Rings, especially since it's now F2P. In the process of downloading it now :)

funny, you go to Lotro from EQ2, and I go to EQ2 from Lotro :)
Lotro is nice, but too small a game, I know it all by heart. at least they managed to release a new area this week (after like 3 years).
got a Lifetime on Lotro, so i will definitely play again, but as of now I love EQ2 way more.

No, you DON'T get to travel to whole middle-earth at all.
They are VERY slow with expanding the game, but maybe it will get better with the so called "free to play" now. Actually FREE is only the starting areas of course - to fix you up (like in all other "free" games). There is no Gondor, Rohan, Mordor in the game, maybe in 5 years - who knows. :)
Anyway, it's still a good game, but if you never played Everquest 2, I would personally recommend it OVER Lotro because its AWESOME!

guys this game is free. at first not as many players played it because it was expensive, as much as wow i think, im not sure if its better then wow or not, but it is definiteley close. take advantage of this game being free because i played the trial and it really is a cool game like wow and its free!!! big calves!
