  • very nice media box on that year.but now i'm upgrading to WDTV Live Hub Media Center.way cooler than this WDTV HD Media Player.

  • love this vid TY

  • is hdtv on itunes better than avi files i know there samller file size but is the quilty as good and is there any problems with screen size on some devices not being 16.9

  • WDTV doesn't update its firmware as frequently as it needs to, and the machine is buggy. I purchased the WDTV version 2 model recently. Won't play MP4 files with AAC audio without screwing up the sync, has similar issues with some MKV files. The older version played these files fine, so it's clearly an issue with the firmware. There are better players out there where they actually keep the frikken thing up to date on the firmware end.

  • An awesome little device, plays every format I throw at it. Divx, Xvid, mp4, matroska, m2ts... Kudos WD.

It would be easy enough for WD to offer alternative GUIs with different looks too. This GUI does look a lot like the Sony Walkman video player's. Maybe a bit of an update is in order there. It still looks pretty sleek.

  • your a fag

  • yay i found his first video? :)

  • The HD box looks exactly like the Western Digital 1 TB My Book Essentials external HDD. Good glossy finish however.

  • FlybyFlicks has lots of higher resolution downloadable videos that play great with the WD Media Player. Create your own airshow by sequencing the clips. Entertain your friends and family with your personal programming on the big screen tv.

  • Does this have a sleep timer?

  • i don't think this player support ogm video files, buti wouldn't mind still buying this =)

  • Can this be hooked up to my router, so i can get media from my PC or NAS. OR do u know anything that can like the popcorn

  • I bought this as a refurb. for about $75. Works great. But instructions for updating the firmware were incomplete. The new firmware must be on your drive, the unit powered OFF and the drive connected, then unit powered ON before the option to update firmware even appears under "system".

Just ordered an HDMI cable (17 cents) from Amazon.

  • and passport ?

  • I liked this video. although the product is less common

  • hmm this is the newer kits. old kits had a glossy remote and a extra stand for the external hd.

  • OK Rodney... You've had 2 months to play with this product....

    Where's our Review !

    :-D

Cannot find 1 good video review on this product as far as what codecs work, and which have problems, never mind the wrapper (I believe you where interested in the .mkv support ?). Did all subs work? Dual audio streams? .ass subs with new firmware? Chapter support for .vobs? What if .iso format? m2ts?

I understand the time consumption of having to gather these files from public domains to review, but... ;-)

  • i havn;t found any file that didn't want to play. So all works even full hd mkv's!

  • 1085 videos ??

  • Yep lolz =)

  • And finally...a couple of...batteries...which are almost impossible...TOOO REMOOOOVE!!!! XO!!!

  • the smell of new components is always refreshing.

    really. ^__^

  • A quick guide here....just...detailing...what to DOOO!!! =3

  • does it play any resolution for AVI. files ?

or is it only made for mkv. files ?

  • oh i see ahah this is unboxing video and not a review :P

  • number 1 hmmm..... is this what happens when someone gets curious? haha the ones in like 500s or 700s are so outdated and this number 1 is like 2009? wow...

  • opennick...it

  • "we've got a CD!!!"....love that =3

  • Are WD really that cheap that they didn't include a HDMI cabel..hmmm

Anyways this product looks very interesting.

  • no one gives hdmi cables not that there cheep retails wont it that way

  • What is the purpose of this device?

  • numer 1, oh this is a unboxing lol.

  • Cool thing, this is the first time I heard about it.

  • Y have one, and y was amazed to see how small it is, the remote is the same lenght as my mobile (nokia 6124c), it looks smaller in real life

  • I just ordered mine... wll get it in 2 days.... hey i guess t also comes with a WD PASSPORT STAND

  • I have one and it doesn't come with a stand

  • Only if it had a ethernet port

  • rodney grat vid

hope to see your upcoming unboxing to be better

    no offense

  • adapter? it is a transformer

  • we call it a power adapter buddy not a transformer.

  • Well sorry for being a elictrition

  • It's boring seing a guy opening a box...

Viewing the object is a lot more interresting.

  • umm not really.. he makes videos like this so when you buy it you know how it actually looks inside.

  • LOL subscribed! A much eaiser way to beat it is to get into the closet on next to the first aid kits. It has 1 point of entry and with four people

  • hahahahah it was nice to hear you laugh Rodney! at 4:11 hahaha those damn batteries went flying

  • Good video, although your P183/PSU unboxing was better (which is good, you've gone frome average unboxer to best).

That wouldn't happen to have a tv tuner in it would it?

  • FYI: The latest firmware is 1.02.07

  • Can this record video from composite

  • Omg! nerd p0rn.

  • haha not so smooth but i suppose they will improve

  • posting on the first unboxing video ! exciting ! lol

  • damn rod..even if i wasnt watching the video..just by listening i'd feel like im seeing everything..amazing details..looking forward to another unboxing :)

  • Nice to see WD provide nice High quality batteries!

  • Nice you do unboxing now

  • Nice you do unboxing now too :)

  • I dont get what it does is it just a video out modem or somthing?

  • Damn I love unboxing new PC bits, they have that smell of newness ^_^

  • i have managed to get my room to smell like this

lord knows how but now i live happy

  • @V4LENT1NE lol! Newness. Nice word! I'll be smelling newness when mine arrives later :-)

  • Bought this last month and connected it to my parents Samsung 40" 1080p LCD (le40a6) trough the HDMIi. Works flawless with an WD passport HDD and does the 1080p with no problems. It also works great with an external DVD drive!

And for the price its an bargain!

  • I get a kick out of just watching other people unbox stuff...does this make me sick?

  • I would love to see some more unboxings, keep going.

  • what happens to the items after you review them?

  • Next unboxing video will be the new Antec P183 Case & CP-850 PSU. A video review will follow this Unboxing video in the weeks to come.

  • 3dgameman

    love these

and thanks a ton for keeping us youtubers entertained

  • Did you upload this video (render...) in MPEG4?

  • #104 - Question/Answer: Converting HD Videos For Upload

  • Can u use and internal hard drive in a external hard drive enclosure???

  • Yep, just as long as the external enclosure has a USB2 connection.

  • Thanks

  • looks like a mybook housing.

  • Hey, this unboxing is a great idea! Keep it up!

  • HAHAHA @ 4:09

  • hehehe #1!

  • I <3 unboxing videos for some reason

  • The video is great Rodney. It doesn't need to be all polished and perfect with retakes. Keep it real and just let it flow.

  • Exactly, these unboxing videos will be unscripted so some will find them less professional than my video reviews.

  • FEET heheheh

  • it's better then i tought it was gonna be.

  • This thing is great

  • Sweet!

  • What does it actually do? Television is dying, and next to none are even filmed i HD so thats pointless. I can't see why a separate console is needed, my laptop, and my PC graphics card and motherboard both have HDMI ports. The optical audio is nice, its good with my PS3, but then most low budget sound cards support 5-7 audio.

I don't know but I have ALOT of tv shows on my external HDD and I don't want to put a show on DVD, time consuming. This media player is handy.

  • Ah, yeah, I see. Thanks, hadn't thought of that :-]

  • Vereonis posted: "Ah, yeah, I see. Thanks, hadn't thought of that :-]"

haha. no problem. I've put an entire show called Lexx on DVDs. Man, that was no joke. I have like about 15-20 DVDs (3 episodes per disc quality wise) in my DVD case. Never again. I've done it with another show called Farscape but quit after just 2 episodes.

  • O_o burning disks takes years compared to the time taken to place on a flash dive etc. I have 100+ GBs of shows on my laptop, I'm just dealing with the absence of space, as, I have loads of blank DVDs, they say 4.7GBs but I only end up fitting 1.5ish Gigs on them :/ And its heart breaking when i have to delete some

  • Vereonis posted: "I have 100+ GBs of shows on my laptop"

I have you beat there. i have about 900GBs of tv shows :) on my 1TB external HDD. i've done that once, putting some episodes of shows on a flash drive using my xbox 360 as a player. it was alright. man i remember hooking up my external HDD to my X360 and my X360 didnt recognize the external HDD. I was going bananas until I was told that the X360 recognizes FAT32 not NTSC

  • thnx, is always good to watch an unpack video so you don't get any surprises when you buy something, but having 900+ video reviews, this first unpacking video should been better, the camera was too close and you were showing stuff out of center, anyway, good luck with this type of videos...

  • These Unboxing video will be a little ram, unlike my video reviews.

  • Nice with some unboxing videos too. :-)

  • IT'S ALL ABOUT THE GRAPHIC CARDS!

  • Its all about the pentiums

  • just do the reviews... what is the point in doing a "unboxing" video...

  • if you don't like it, then don't watch the unboxing videos.

  • can you do a review on it as well?

you should do more unboxing videos

what this product purchased or do you receive it from western digital?

  • Have you upgraded to the latest firmware?

  • i have it. it's really great but some 1080p video file have some problems with the picture :(

  • argh.. unbox some videocards and stuff :p

  • Out of curiosity, can you just plug a USB stick into this and have it play the videos ?

  • Yes

  • Yes, there are two USB2 ports and you can plug really any UBS storage device, like a thumbdrive, external HDD, etc...

  • oh nice, you use a swiss army knife =). good job rodney, unboxing videos sometimes give information about a product which test or written reviews dont show. also its not a trailer which only shows the good looking sides of the product. ceep going =), greetings from switzerland :P

  • Comment removed

  • What?

  • Wow thanks rodney, i was always wondering about when you were going to start doing unboxing videos.

  • LOL swiss army :) i use leatherman:)

  • lol hd not even close to hd. first you cant get hd out of a composit cable.... thats all i have to say.......

  • What are you talking about? It has HDMI capability. That would be considered HD.

  • dude, what do you not understand about "It has a HDMI output"?

I guess the composit output is in case you want to bring it over to a friend without an HD TV...

  • Looking forward to more unboxings! In fact, I'd like to see them integrated into your regular review videos. But you probably already considered doing that.

  • I did, but it would make the video review much to long.

  • yay nice video rodney!

  • Rodney Reynolds is Jesus.

  • Nice style is opening boxes on the fly. There is more feelin'

  • LOL

"They also include what looks to be feet.........................which is, great aswell"

I just about cried watching this. please never make another box opening vid again your way to thorough especially with the plastic shielding and battery compartment on the remote

It was good but you went a little too far box opening is ment to be a quick thing

  • Having a indepth unboxing is fine I think, good for people with specific questions about the product. I admit that after taking the Plastic cover off for the 3rd time it was a tad unneeded but it's his first try at an unboxing video.

Nice video RR, I know how hard it can be to film one of these, remembering everything to say and dealing with any thing that goes wrong on the fly.

  • i got one of these about 4 months ago great quality device and very easy to use

also got a 1tb hdd to go with it

  • 1:33 LOL hhaha JK

nice vid..you should open it not on camera -close it and then make a video...so you will not say silly stuf as "They included feet" LOL

  • This video made me lol hard.

Rodney is great at making videos, but this one just made me laugh

  • Kick ass, unboxing vids are a good idea.

  • more unboxing =]

  • nice product

Might be just what I was looking for the other day.

  • love it, and i want one! =P

  • Keep it up 3D game man! 5/5!

  • Sweet i love unboxing vids!

It is like opening your new hardware yourself XD..

And i love the sound of the packaging.

    Make more!

  • Good video man. Your videos progressively got more professional looking over the years.

  • I really enjoyed your unboxing, unlike many others it was very well done.

  • More unboxing videos! a nice little change of pace :)

  • Best unboxing ever.

Would love to see more 3D guy. Good work.

  • This would be cool if it was incorporated into the actual reviews of the products themselves. Just giving some input.

Also, this is the most professional unboxing video I've seen.

  • 100% KICKASS PRODUCT UNBOXING

excellent job and no prior preparation !

    3DGAMEMAN IS 100% KICKASS

  • Thanks.. Yea, from mouth to camera, sh!t happens!

  • I know that to well. I can never get my tongue untied. lol

if you can check out my vid on cable mngt. part 1

good thing we can edit. 60 min raw footage = barely 10min of upload lol

  • 100% KICKASS indeed

  • The link for more unboxing vids doesnt work D:

  • Link will be up in a few days

  • i like these unboxing videos. the sounds of the plastic while taking it out is soothing lol

  • Nice job as always

  • video #1???

  • Yep, first Unboxing video

  • You spelling unboxing wrong in the description :)

  • Nice one, ok now ;)

  • No problem :P

  • First Unboxing!

    Cool Rodney

  • Very nice

  • cool do more unboxing vidz!

  • After hooking this this up it worked without a hitch. The latest firmware was installed on this one so I had no issues. Setting the WD TV to 1080p 60Hz and audio to digital, I hooked it up to a Yamaha HTR-6160 using an HDMI cable, then from the receiver to a Toshiba 52XV545U 52" LCD HDTV using another HMDI. Drop photos, music & videos on a USB device and you're set!

  • Its really neat to hear Rodney's impressions from first glance as opposed to his normal reviews after using and testing the products.

Will be looking forward to these as they come around. :)

  • Yea, it's different for sure ;) Many more to come...

  • battery juggler!

  • very cool :)

  • Amazing Rodney, loved it.

  • I would live to see full review on this, not just tech specs, but how it works with TV

  • cool your first unboxing video :D

  • very nice :)

    love the unboxxings. =d

  • wow
