As I say and think(Vinyl is Final). Cd's do not have much base. I buy Cd's because I DJ and I want to preserve my Vinly as much as I can. I have over 40thousand 45's dating back to about 1953. Stopped buying 45's in the 90's when music became repetitive and sickening. Still by oldies though. I do buy some 45's of today, especially good C&W and real rock. No Rap Crap and heavy metal . Still buy Segar, Springsteen and mellancamp and other real good Rock artists.

I have a Technics direct drive turntable that I used to listen to all my vinyl records but unfortunately, CD's have taken over as the media for listening to music....Nothing can beat the rich and personal feel of playing vinyl on a nice turntabe such as yours...Great sound from your turntable !!!!

They really should've released this on a 12 inch... You can't have an 8 minute song on a 45 without reducing the bass and overall quality of the audio. Shame, it's such a classic. Still sounds pretty good though.

@m0therfan and beatlesfan464 - this was only released on 7" vinyl in the UK as a jukebox/promo with the "B" side as Whole Lotta Love. The band never wanted this out as a single probably cos they thought that a single equated them as a "pop" stereotype.

Hopefully 2012 brings the 40th anni, with maybe a 12" remaster...we can only dream

@saemikneu This is proof that vinyl record mastering is a true artform. To be able to squeeze an 8 minute long song on to one side of a 45 is a difficult task. It means knowing how wide to make the grooves so it sounds good and tracks properly and doesn't skip during loud passages in the song. Only experienced mastering engineers know how to do this, and there aren't many around now that know how anymore.

@saemikneu Because the first half of the song is so quiet, with no drums and little base, they could pitch the grooves closer together, then increase the pitch when the drums come in. Also a cut in the bottom end will help reduce the track width, and a reduction in volume will also help. All these things together are why it's possible, especially with this song being quiet at first. If we still used 45s, most of the hip hop could not exist on them. (that would be a good thing!)

@scartissue94 music wasn't ruined by Apple, music was ruined by the record industry in the mid 90's who ignored the digital revolution taking place. instead of releasing garbage sounding over-compressed cd's they should have seen the internet as a means for selling quality product. they missed that boat completely and now P2P will never be stopped. I'm happy listening to lossless needle-drops on my iPod/iPhone

I've got the original promo radio station copy to this. Unfortunately, it has lots of unpleasant clicks early in the song on the stereo side. The mono sounds much better! I had to shell out a good amount of money for the copy on Ebay several years back.

My favorite song called "Stairway to Heaven" was indeed a hit single. It was sung by Neil Sedaka some time in the early 1960s. And no, it is not the same song as this one, and I know it's not the same song as this one.

Stairway was released as a 45 in some parts of Asia, I believe, and it was a Split-Song Single. The song fades out at the four minute mark on the A-Side, and fades in on the B-side.

"Hey Jude" came close at 7:20, but 8 minutes seems to be the breaking point. "American Pie" (8:33) was split up into two sides, "Part 1" and "Part 2".

Oldies stations usually avoid this song due to its "non-hit" status and long playing time, but I have an aircheck of WCBS-FM playing it back in 1991. I doubt it is in their current playlist today, though.

You're absolutely correct!

In 1972, the 45 RPM single still ruled, and the fact that it was NOT available on a single prevented it from being listed on the Billboard Hot 100. Had this record existed on a commercial 45 meant it would have appeared on the Hot 100. However, Led Zeppelin proved that a band could still be extremely successful even without a hit single...

@WABCRADIO77 That rule actually existed all the way until December 1998. A song could not get onto the Hot 100 chart unless it was commercially released as a single. Since cassette and CD singles never really caught on to replace 45s, this led to a big gap in the '90s where many songs were big hits on the radio but never showed up on the Hot 100, until Billboard finally changed the rule.
