One of the best version I've ever heard! Dynamics and phrasing are top notch. My only bit would be the diphthong in "going." I think it should be pronounced more like "go-in," and not "go-ing." It's only a shade distracting to my ear, but it's mere opinion. Bravo!
Pretty good job, the basses are a bit loud though, and I hafta say since i read it : this could be considered a spiritual but for the fact that spiritual's were sung by black slaves, and were not written down, and the man that composed this song was not a slave, though his ancestors may have been. just had to say ^_^
I'm not mad at you, but it's a Negro Spiritual, not a Gospel. (There are very distinct differences). But you are right in that it should no more sound like a Renaissance piece than an Irish folk song should sound like a Vaughn Williams "Toward the Unokown Region". (I just got a chill thinking of that wonderful piece, but I digress) Overall, wonderfully done.
For some reason my replies are not showing up where I'm inputting them. Oh well, wherever I write it, THIS is the rendition I will present to my choir to emulate.
I must agree about the Bass section to a degree (not entirely), but more importantly I'd like to say that as a Choral Director searching for a good example to play for my current choir (a layperson church choir) I heard this one. It is BY FAR the best I've seen. Basses a little shouty here and there on Fortissimo sections? Yes. Tenor/Bass sections less than perfectly blended at times? Yes. Choir imitating a pogo stick and comically saying "Boing" when they sing "going"? Surely so. (Cont)
Those few criticisms fail to compare though to the impeccable tonality, crisp sincopation, tight dynamics (Can you find more balanced crescendo/decrescendos than in this rendition? Think not. I pulled out the score just to follow with what I already know are 100% correctly executed dynamics. I applaud enthusiastically your interpretation and execution of this piece. Bravo!

This is wonderful! the diction is excellent and especially for having such a fast tempo and such confusing intervals.

the bass part was a bit shouty. shouting does not equal vocal power.
khaoz07 3 years ago
For your information they were not shouting, since their voices were modulated. It's a gospel, and it should not sound like a renaissance song.

@hmhbanal I agree they are NOT shouting HOWEVER this is not gospel this is a NEGRO SPIRITUAL.....

I actually agree with Khaoz07. Powerful vocals does not necessarily mean shouty vocals.
