I respect Moulana's opinion but the simple rule he mentioned only tells that the Music which is producing bad effects is Haram. It cannot be presented to declare Music Haram in its totality. Haram use of a thing does not make the thing Haram in itself. Examples, internet, television
Moreover, it would have been simpler had there been only Hadiths condemning Music. The actual academic problem is that we also have Hadiths that apparently indicate its allowance.
