Ulster scots isn't even a language it's directly Gaelic and educated ulsterscots and Gaelic speakers can understand each other! As for Americans tracing their roots fine but I hate the terms scots-american or Irish american! If u don't legally qualify for a British or Irish passport yanks then you are plain American nothing else. Nationality comes from place of birth not your bloodline!
(cont) is that they were lowland Scots, meaning most of them were Brythonic Celts (as opposed to Gaelic) with Anglo-Saxon blood, and Presbytarian as opposed to Catholic. But some of them were Gaelic Scots originally from the highlands, despite the efforts of the British govt to keep Gaelic Scots out of Ulster. There was also some intermarriage with the native Irish.
@lookatmepleasesir People in northern Ireland of English or Scottish origin used to identify strongly as Irish until the conflicts between republicans and loyalists and especially the division of Ireland into the Republic and the UK.
@lookatmepleasesir Yes, you are quite correct in your posts. There were quite a few Gaelic speaking Highlanders (mostly Protestant) who settled in ulster during plantation times. A good number of the Lowlander settlers from around Galloway could speak gaelic too, and Presbyterian ministers were schooled in it as part of their training.

Ulster Scots are Irish seeing as their home is in Ireland. The original name of the Irish was Scotti and Scotland is named after the Irish Gaelic people who migrated to the Scottish highlands. Many Irish catholic families have their roots in Scotland, although from a time earlier to when the Scots-Irish came to ulster. But ulster has always been a route for Irish migrants to Scotland and vice versa. The main difference between the Ulster Scots and the native Irish (cont)
I once made the mistake of telling an Irish person that I was 1/2 Irish(my mom is Irish, Dad Hungarian). Turns out that's impossible. He was very upset. Good thing I was in America when I told him or he might have killed me.
I'm American and as most American's I think...I'm aware of the difference between the Scots-Irish and the Irish Catholics. Places in the North like Boston, New York, Chicago and Philadelphia have a lot of Irish Catholics. The South has the Scots-Irish...they can be anywhere from Tennessee and Kentucky to Alabama and Texas. Like these people are your typical bible belt conservative Southerners. Makes me proud to be an Irish Catholic American in Boston. And yes, I'm American first but have roots.
@Flipper79able I'm not sure if most Americans do know the difference. Even a lot of people who are scots-irish think that it just means they have Scottish & Irish ancestors rather than it meaning a distinct group of people. I can understand you being proud of your roots but i'm curious as to why watching this video particularly makes you proud to be an Irish catholic in Boston?
@william3358 scotch irish ..ulster scots aren't irish ... its only scotch irish american who think they are irish ...thier brethren in ulster dont see themselves as irish in any way ... if you were to call an ulster scot irish they would be insulted .... and i totally agree he is american and he should be proud to be an american ...its amazing how many americans here on youtube put down ireland as thier country ..... its weird
@william3358 He is of Irish extraction as most Irish Americans are except the natives . Just like the unionists and loyalists living in Ireland but consider themselves British.
Northern Ireland prod history - All of the scummiest prods gathered from the 4 corners of Britain, sent to Northern Ireland to terrorize catholics, the end.
