Hitting your head or having it fall on your head really isn't a pleasant experience. . . The foam coated in fiberglass really isn't all that soft. I remember the first time I went out, I freaked whe the wave caught up to me and I fell right on my back and hit my head pretty hard on the board.

To surf you just need board wetsuit etc, then its free (apart from parking + fuel) and strangely enough most people who surf already had these items before the recession and go AFTER WORK or WEEKENDS! And surely buying anything in a recession will help boost economy, as far as i know we have been told to keep spending (within our means) and help business' survive in these hard times.

But thinking hard about trying to learn to surf next summer and having grown up in Oklahoma I don't have a clue what to expect. This series has been really helpful. I love surfing, I try to get out every day. I'm 61, live on Maui and as far as I know I'm the oldest person that has done Jaws when it was critical. I learned to surf on Oahu in the early 60's (I was in the submarine navy). I love the tow in part. I would be happy just having my tow-partner just drag me round all day, but with gas at 5/per that get unreal really quick. This geek on the video cracks me up. Maybe no one noticed but the really good water men do not look like anorexic toothpicks.
