  • Papaya will work like the pineapple juice, and some Tame conditioner or Aussie 3 day have lot of a useful ingredient. Thanks!

  • Dude what do you do with it afterwards can you splice?

  • blood has no dna in it?what about white blood cells.nice video though

  • well done dude :) for youtubers, who are looking for some intelligent fun, this should work well. U can try other samples too, but u need a lot of them to actually see the DNA. I m extracting DNA from endophytic actinomycetes, and Geez, it isnt as fun as this!

  • i am writing a college lab paper over this exact experiment right now and i need to know what exactly the meat tenderizer does, any help?

  • maybe i m too late for telling u this. Anyway, if i m not mistaken, meat tenderizer acts as an enzyme such as proteinase. It will inactivate the enzyme in the cell, before the enzyme destroy the DNA.

  • I feel bored so this is for people who don't understand: The yeast does nothing except provide a substance to extract DNA from, You add the detergent which breaks down the cells in the yeast but leaves the DNA, you add the alcahol which acts as a medium for the dna to be able to rise into so you can see it, you insert the mixing stick and break the "wall" between the alcahol and detergent mixture so the DNA can float up and you see it.

  • Very biopunk ;)

  • your amazing!!

  • That was awsome thanks for showing.

  • Your lab looks a lot like a garage. Don't go Unabomber on us and keep animals out of experimentation.

  • dude your right

  • Dude, that was awesome! I wanna try it, but I'm afraid I might do something wrong and end up having some kind of disease. Its probably not possible but still. Did you actually stick your finger in the achohol thing and lick it? :P

  • Remembered I did this about a year ago with garlic. Kitchen reeked of garlic for like a month. Not the best idea I've ever had...

But the experiment was really cool

  • yeast eating yeast, lol

    canabalism: fungus style

    lol

  • That was funny. :)

It might have been more funny because I'm tired.

    More Chemistry!!

  • i thought alcohole causes DNA to break down, if it dosn't then why aren't scientists cloning extinct animals from the specimens they have preserved in alcohol.

  • If you do DNA extraction experiments properly (i.e. breaking down the cells to release nucleus e.t.c) the alcochol precipitates the DNA. Cheers to the dude who made this video

  • Yeah got to do it myself, it looks alot better in person. don't wonder how i got the alcohol and im only 15 lol...

  • Hey Mac, When are you gonna blow stuff up?

  • 2008. Only burning in '07

  • Ah... Might I suggest using Aluminium and Carbon Tetrachloride/Permanganate? or perhaps chlorate and sugar?

  • might i suggest you stfu?

  • Hah...funny guy

  • I'm not familiar with the first one, but I'm doing the second for sure!

  • sweet...

  • "try not to drink anything that has a fire hazard warning.. *tries it*" hahah great video, you seemed like you enjoyed yourself :D also, you are awesome because you like halo.

  • would've been good if you said how it worked

  • I LIKE PIE!!!

  • Could I use denatured alcohol? You can get a gallon of it at the hardware store for about what one bottle of everclear costs.

  • Mac really seemed to enjoy making this video. Perhaps he has found his calling. A modern day (TV's) Mr. Wizard ... (you had to be around in the 50's in the USA to remember him)

  • Nah, not true... I grew up in the eighties and Mr. Wizard was on Nickelodeon every saturday.

  • OK. Now that you mentioned it, I vaguely remember that Mr. Wizard was on Nickelodeon.

    TNX for the update.

  • I think you should try dexedrine because I have the same issue, I may well be completley wrong but perhaps your experiencing a very mild form of epilepsy or ADD? I thought i saw that in you. Its frustrating you loose your flow it turns in to a tic sometimes for me but as I said it seemed very unnoticable but maybee 5 milligrams of methamphetamine or amphetamine would give you full control over that.

  • Neat experiment, i'd like to try this sometime. Your hair seems to get in your face a lot, you might want get some cheap bobby pins, they work pretty well.

  • he has nice hair though, so its ok. If it was gross hair then he should consider bobby pins...

  • It doesn't look bad, just if it's a bother, pins are cheap and easy. BUT THEN THERE IS THE SOCIAL STIGMA ASSOCIATING LONG HAIR AND EVERYTHING RELATED THERETO WITH FEMENINITY.

  • who cares about hair?

  • lol amused by DNA considering how smart you are xD alas we had to do it in biology useing peas and it looked cool seeing dna and genuinly i had the same reaction xD

  • In Biology we extracted DNA from strawberries.

They were frozen, so we had to mash them up with water. We used shampoo and dish soap though. And we used the crappy, cheap alcohal that gets used for first aid. And what we did wasn't in the same order as what you did, Ours was fairly different. Same results though.

    =]

  • i want to have your baby

    ♥ ♥ ♥

  • wow

    i♥you

    :]

    lol

i really like your vids though....

  • LMAO tihs was hilarious, i'd love to watch more experiment vids!, i did this experiment with PCR etc. etc. anyway make more vids like this! it was so cool.

  • That was so entertaining! :) And really, weirdly cool. =) You make me laugh.

  • you mentioned you aren't good w/ your hands. need a lab assistant? i got nothing better to do

  • Inspirational demonstration! This kind of video is exactly what makes YouTube great ;)

  • ha mac you look genuinely fulfilled at seeing the DNA. kudos

  • thank you rabbi

  • Awesome video! Just a quick note, I use everclear to make my kaluha at the holidays. Only a pint to 2 gals of liquid so it isnt that strong lol. NEVER drink it straight.

  • my recipe for kahlua says to use a fifth of the cheapest vodka you can find. I,too, make kahlua as christmas presents for my friends. It's best to make it around july or august to give it time to mellow.

  • loved this one ^^

  • good work

  • Nice work. Like the vids. Keep them coming.

  • word to the wise.any person who knows what ever clear is would know not to drink it straight.

  • That was awesome, i want to try it, haha i barely cook :P. Your videos rock it!

  • Oh my gosh, I'm so super happy your making videos again.:D

    Thank you.x]

  • that was awesome

great job mac, just when i thought your videos couldnt get more awesome, bam, you 1 up yourself

  • Awesome! microbiology is FUN!!

  • Good video! My son and I will try this next month when we are studying DNA!

  • Great! Education can be fun- just takes the right teacher.

  • I think I love you :D

    Be my chemistry teacher?

  • that was awsome

  • Great vid Professor Mac!

  • I agree with Akelron tht was a fantastic video and I'm definitely going to try it. Surprisingly you didn't mess it up as bad as you thought. I learned a lot more from you than i would my own chemistry teacher. GREAT JOB MORE MORE!!

  • Cool stuff.

  • Mac, you're turning into the quintessential "absent minded professor." Or maybe it's ADD! I think there's a connection. Now, where did I put my glasses?

  • Great video! Do more like this. I'm still curious where the DNA came from though.

  • the yeast.

    yeast is living.

  • Haha! Does this mean film ourselfs drinking things with a fire hazard on it, then send it the link to you?

  • Well that was a good video, and why?, because the headphones have returned. Order has returned to the universe.

  • lmao!

  • what's your gamertag?

  • ahahaha ahaha. you'd be a pretty cool teacher man. "the yeast are getting bored".

wait, what were you extracting the dna from??

  • sweet

  • I did this in life science in seventh grade. =] 'Twas exciting.

  • tight video

  • Dude that was so cool as soon as I can I will try it. Thanks

  • That was freaking awesome and fun to watch. More people should make videos like this...

  • I remember getting drunk just sniffing bottlecaps of everclear

  • Another fine video.

    Damn, you pretty much rule.

  • We did it with onions.

But we used a centrafuse (sp).

    It was smelly.

  • that was cool

  • I did not know red blood cells didn't have DNA!

Don't sex cells have only half the DNA though?

  • Yeah, sex cells have 23 chromosomes which contain the DNA. The other sex cell, from a different organism, will contain the other half of the chromosomes so when they come together, they get a complete set of 46. I'm sure you already know this, but..:)

Red bloods cells will lack their nucleus's, which have DNA, because they need all the space they can for carrying oxygen in the human body. :)

  • Yeah, it's coming back to me now. If I recall correctly, only humans have cells with 46 chromosomes.

    Thanks! =)

  • i'm confused,i thought you couldn't see dna!

  • It's really small, but if you gather all of it from all the cells in the same place, you can.

  • 1 DNA by its self no but they tend to stick together and then you can see them in large groups
