those iron slats are leaf springs. he would heat them up red hot, flatten them, then stick them in the slats he carved, then he would pour cold water and they would snap back to their original shape.. a curve. the stone would then be ready to pulled up out the ground. ropes could go under the rocks easily, because of the slats.

He kinetically excites these slats and can then cut or drill through the quarry rock. That is why the slits in the walls match the slats in the room.
