  • Very poignant to watch this and hear the laughter when you know that he was in so much physical pain and he was venting his frustration with the medical profession.

  • reminds me of paul o grady!

  • Brilliant from the man himself..Legend! I didn't think he actually spoke that way..lol..Go on Kennefh..Give em hell my good man..yeehaa!

  • Sort of sums up the education sytem. Everyones a winner!!

  • Sort of sums up the education sytem.

  • Rik Myall copied him.

  • true!

  • An incredibly funny and indeed tragic man God rest him...

  • A lot of comedians are really sad. They are brilliant, but often had to develop their comedy to cope with all the dickheads around them or the shit things that might have happened to them... More power to 'em

  • @kukkaFeatures To me, most truly great comedy comes from tragedy and pathos. Even if it's just slapstick, like Laurel&Hardy, or Buster Keaton, there is pathos at its heart. A lot of stand-ups have a dark side to them, a dark side that perhaps makes their comedy what it is.

  • @sulijoo Such as Stan Laurel's womanising?

  • witty and intelligent

  • Noooooooooo matron

  • awesome face at 0:00 press pause and then take it back to the start and you'll see what i mean :)

  • @s4vann4r0ck5 Haha amazing.

  • @s4vann4r0ck5 mmm...i did this and then thought why would you scrutinise a video like this?

  • Absolute genius, what a legend. RIP Willo!

  • Wonder if he was coeliac?

  • Funny guy. Shame he killed himself at just 60.

  • @sirtinycreep well, he didnt. so dont worry.

  • @sirtinycreep As howardgreenwood says - Williams didn't kill himself.

  • @godfreyih He died on 15 April 1988 in his flat. The cause of death was an overdose of barbiturates. An inquest recorded an open verdict, as it was not possible to establish for certain whether his death was a suicide or an accident. However, since he had often wrote in his diaries that suicide was a welcome option, it's likely Williams did intend killing himself, for he believed himself to have terminal cancer, although he did not.

  • Shame that such a funny and intelligent man should be so unhappy in his personal life. Maybe that's part of what made him funny

  • sums up the NHS

  • splosions

  • A poor tormented soul, who I'm guessing suffered from terrible depression.

Often such people are blessed with sharpness and wit but cursed with an incurable, crippling illness where you're detached from everybody else and endure mental torment which is what mental illness is.

My heart aches to see the pain he was in :(

  • @Njugglesvatn or he was just a dirty little fag!

  • @71shoelover why are you on here? sad little idiot you are

  • @71shoelover if you knew about him then you'd know that comment was uncalled for.. he lived a life of celibacy and his internal organs were collapsing were the reasons for this statement of doctors

  • @MLG101 I agree that comment was totally uncalled for!!

  • @71shoelover Why such harshness?

  • @Thesaeed23 It's called homophobia.

  • @sslaxx I know. I know.....but its so cruel to speak of the dead in this way - he can't defend himself......poor thing.

  • Sexy extrapolation, courtesy of Kenneth Williams

  • I think Kenneth would look at youtube twitter etc and know he was right

  • Such an intensely complex character.Read his diaries, they are absolutely fascinating & give a real insight into the man,not just the "Carry On..." actor.

  • This is so true

  • A GREAT QUEEN, HOW MANY OF YA HAD HER ????

  • Kenneth Williams - adorable!

  • A specialist knows more and more about less and less, until eventually he knows absolutely everything about absolutely nothing. A generalist knows less and less about more and more, until he knows absolutely nothing about absolutely everything.

Who actually originated this quote would require some research, but it certainly goes back quite a while. As with most good quotes it's been repeated and passed down through many well-known people.

  • Who are the other people? Is that Loretta Swit?

  • @SuperWyattH yes... thats Hot Lips from MASH .. x

  • @MLG101 Aye, and I claim a prise if I'm right in saying the guy on the right you see for a split second is disgraced ex DJ, Jonathan King

  • @wesmatron .. yep thats Jonathon king.. hahaha

    so L-R

Michael Aspel , ......? then Kenneth .. then Loretta and Jonathon King

    whose inbetween Michael and Kenneth?

  • @wesmatron .. yep thats Jonathon king.. hahaha

    so L-R

Michael Aspel , ......? then Kenneth .. then Loretta and Jonathon King

    whose inbetween Michael and Kenneth?

  • @wesmatron @wesmatron .. yep thats Jonathon king.. hahaha

    so L-R

Michael Aspel , ......? then Kenneth .. then Loretta and Jonathon King

    whose inbetween Michael and Kenneth?

  • Ooooooooooh matron! Stop messin about....

  • michael sheen portraits him in pure perfection!

  • You can see that he absolutely meant it. He was a true comic- and a true tragedian- at the same time in his usual demeanour. It wasn't just to get a cheap laugh. He could sense that the modern world seemed to be becoming less and less about being a 'renaissance man' (perhaps like him) and more and more about the marketing of the modern world where being really good at something very small is more profitable.

  • @Picnicl totally agree.. he was so ill and so many gastric problems..so many tests and procedures and everyone guessing but no answers..

  • @Picnicl Well said. It must have been so annoying to him that his poignant words at times were just taken as comic rants. Bless him.

  • @Picnicl absolutely, spot on

  • lmao, god rest your soul kenneth, you were amazing!!! its already 2011 now and im still watching carry ons!!! <3

  • can someone tell me what he said? I can't understand it

  • @estderoma "It's frightening to think with modern medicine and all the technique available to them...they can't really help you..In the old days, you know, you were better off because nowadays, they are all specialists.Everyone's becoming better and better at less and less"

Eventually someone's going to be superb...

    at nothing"

  • @estderoma He says "It was far better in the old days. Nowadays, they are "specialists" they are getting better and better at doing LESS AND LESS ! Some day someone will be SUPERB at doing NOTHING !"

Infamy ! Infamy ! ....They've all got it in for me !

  • and the motto of the Romans - 'Nihil Expectore in Omnibus' - No spitting in the public transport!

  • FUCKING VISIONARY

  • Hmmm matron .... lol

  • what the fuck did he just say

  • A LEGENDARY MAN

  • I mean't Kenneth..sorry..

  • infamy infamy they've all got it in for me.........without doubt the best 'quote' our dear Dennis ever uttered...

  • It's hardly an original thought, let alone quote. "The general practitioner will know less and less about more and more until he knows nothing about everything. The specialist will know more and more about less and less till he knows everything about nothing." Predates this by quite a bit.

  • @edwdixon5

    youtube.com/watch?v=4-PIckHrZ0o

  • Legend

  • Kenneth has put his finger on it !!

I am an expert on absolutely NOTHING.... So I am fully qualified !!!!

  • Hi youtubers , I am looking for a copy of the "Joan Rivers Show" (can we talk) BBC 1986 with amonst others Kenneth williams ,Im really after the K.W bit but a full copy would be great, any one? thanks

  • Did he have a vision of shows like Big Brother? hmmm!

  • He is like an anorexic version of Gay Byrne

  • Yes, Legend... TOLD the world whom he is.. never made excuses for whom he became.... Kenneth, be sure to 'carry on' making me laugh.. at myself. jwb

  • legend

  • The coroner gave an Open Verdict to the cause of Mr. Williams' demise, he was unable to find enough evidence to conclusively prove whether it was suicide or an accidental overdose.

  • He had a serious point.

  • I love the way his voice sounds and how he drags out the syllables in the middle of them.

  • The blonde is Loretta Swit who played Margaret Houlihan in M*A*S*H.. (One half of Cagney and Lacy.)

  • @jimincairns only in the movie 'cagney and lacey' not the TV series.

  • @scotsmaninusa Loretta Swit plays the role of Christine Cagney in the original television movie (1981), but she was forced to decline the role in the series when the producers of M*A*S*H refused to let her out of her contract.

  • @jimincairns uh,ok

  • He's fucking right though isn't he and this was over 20 years ago!!!! A genius, true genius. Great loss.

  • He predicted the Kardashians!

  • lol talking about justin bieber

  • Not just the best quote from him but one of the best quotes ever. And sadly, a very true one.

  • Quote from the diary for those who insist its Hazel O'Connor

    Pge 757

    thurs 5th Feb 1987

"Guest on Michael Aspel Show, they've been let down at the last minute.. I said yes.

I went on the show with Dennis Taylor (snooker) and an American actress called Hot Lips from M.A.S.H.

  • Comment removed

  • Hazel O'Connor is sitting to his right I think!! It was 1987

  • @FrenchiesDubsteppaz

it is Loretta Swit.. from M*A*S*H

  • @FrenchiesDubsteppaz to Kenneth's right is Michael Aspel

  • @MLG101 Hazel O'Connnor dressed as Michael Aspel.....

  • @PhilK116 ? lol.. poor hazel... if only she was in the clip she would be so popular in this thread :p

  • Kenneth was one of the greatest Actors ever but had a sad life. Miss you. R.I.P.

  • Many a true word spoken in jest.

    Kenneth was a genius.

  • Ken at his Bona best.

  • Brilliant

  • I love him!!

  • absolutely spot on and as someone who has suffered chronic illness i can also see that Ken is speaking about his own experiences with the medical profession. The audience laugh but i cannot help feel Ken was not really joking he was speaking from experience and you can see the pain and exasperation there.

  • That IS a good quote (once I had deciphered what he was saying - in fact someone wrote it out, thanks). Very observant and quite probably true!

  • Did anyone else see the sprite flash across the screen?

  • Very true those words...

  • He looks so ill here. Poor Kenny.

  • The level of camp in these comments are brilliant lol

  • He is paraphrasing Voltaire to a degree: " ' Doctors are men who give medicines about which they know little.......to humans about whom they know nothing ".

Kenneth Williams & ' Beyond Our Ken ' & ' Round The Horne ' gratefully remembered.

  • He is so right!!!

  • @ FreyaBlack

he was truly a legend and now when i watch the Carry on films i think of him in a different way to what i did before, He's brilliant its the same with Sid James he was a troubled man also but when he was on the films he looked so happy and care free.

  • he died on my mums birthday the year i was born i was born in may, he was a great man and a wonderful actor, paul o grady mentions him in his book saying the last time he saw him he look dreadful and then i was gone. RIP sweet sweet man xxxx

  • "he died on my mums birthday the year i was born i was born in may"

Really? Do you know if he liked After Eight mints? Just curious, as you seem to have a mysterious spiritual connection with the gentleman.

  • @WellingtonGandT oh fuck im pissing myself here, damn now i need to fix my mascara, thank u for making me choke, kudos to u lol

  • @88lilminx

I also born that year after his death...At my childhood I saw so many times the Carry on...series because of him. He will be always an essencial thing in my life. Always.

  • The venom in his voice is brilliant. He was great in the Carry On films but its still a pity that ultimately that is all he is really remembered for. A great talent.

  • RIP Great man.

  • Could listen to him talk for hours. He had the funniest, most interesting stories, and the best voice ever.

  • Right on the money! Allopathy leads to psychopathy. Some of these boy doctors are utterly convinced of their omnipotence in spite of the fact that nothing they do produces a cure. Health can never be about the repression of symptoms.

  • Many true words spoken in jeste !

  • I used to work in the same street where he lived with his mother. We were on the ground floor, when he passed we used to call out to him. If were busy and didn't notice him he would tap on the window and give us a wave.

  • Love you.

  • Please, would you write his words? I can understand English... but sadly not his (wonderful) accent :-)

  • "It's frightening to think with modern medicine and all the technique available to them...they can't really help you..

In the old days, you know, you were better off because nowadays, they are all specialists.

Everyone's becoming better and better at less and less.

Eventually someone's going to be superb...

    at nothing"

  • sad thing is that he was absolutely right LOVE KENNETH WILLIAMS, we will remember you always

  • Sadly, that day has come. Reality TV actors :(

  • That wasnt an original quote from him.Sadly I cant remember the author but it was meant to be a comment on the medical profession and on all the specialists for the liver the kidney the eyes the bollocks etc...all of whom lose sight of the whole mensch and can only see their own little bit.

  • I can't help but agree with Kenneth.. lol

  • I remember passing him on Charlotte Street just before he died. He didn't look well. He was yellow, and his skin was strangely wrinkled.

  • He started out as an actor but found it asier to play the poofter. Kenneth Williams, diaries "they are all doing me nowadays". Larry Grayson. Alan Carr. Christopher Biggins. Graham Norton, "my act is Kenneth Williams".

Typecast himself and was not happy silly sod.

  • round the horn .nudg nudge, wink wink lol full of Sexual innuendos that .

Barry Took who was responsible for nearly all of the scripts i belive (along with Marty Feldman) built the show around the ordinary man, the 'maypole' that was Kenneth Horne, around which a array of eccentric and fantastical characters danced. Most had names that were in themselves quite outlandish; but had other, more stranger qualities when spoken aloud.love it

  • hes just brilliant

  • he was suspected of bumping off his old man

    scary eh?

  • I was living in London when Ken died. Very sad day. Early passing for a very funny man.

  • just pure quality, i adore kenny williams...

  • brilliant man, very funny on "Just a Minute" bbc radio for years and years

  • Hes so right

  • Unfortunately Kenny ,You were So Right on the button.

  • Fantastic comment from a very talented man! Many of the celebrities today who are idolised don't deserve an inch of the fame or wealth they possess. It's talent like Kenneth whom should never be forgotten!!!

    R.I.P KW

  • ZlunkeyM, I`m curious to know what talent this Kenneth chap had? Am I too young to know about his skills?

  • Look up the 'Carry On' Movies. He was in loads of them

  • He was an actor and famous British comedian from the 60's to the 80's most notable for his appearances in the Carry On films.

  • He starred in radio shows "Beyond Our Ken" and "Round the Horne" ( both on YT) and also a lot of Carry On films.

  • @coltsuperocean10 hello. to really understand the man who was "BORN BRILLIANT" which is Mr kenneth wiliams, watch him sparkle in the numerous interviews on youtube.. and of course his movies

For a start try watching 'An Audience With Kenneth Williams'. .(youtube).

    enjoy

  • He was fantastic this man! One of a kind. Never seen another like him. Hes crazy! But i reckon he was a genius.

How right is he about the whole Specialist thingy, so true!!

  • i never knew he got this old

  • i know, it suprised me too, but he was 62 when he died

  • Genius!

  • There`ll never be another!!!

  • Lol! :)

  • What great comedians England used to forge in the old days...

  • his diary entry says this..."i went on the show with dennis taylor (snooker) and an american girl called hot lips from mash. the audience was super! my spot went v. well but of course i felt all the self loathing after over self indulgence. with me it is verbal diarrhoea and while i'm gabbling on, another side of me is saying, "oh dear what an exhibition you're making of yourself".

elsewhere in his diaries, he makes the comment about specialists heard here.

  • Does anyone remember a BBC radio series he did in the early 1970s called "The Secret Life of Kenneth Williams"? I recall he was a spy of some sort battling a terrorist organization known as the Brotherhood of Revolution and Anarchy, or "BRA" for short. It was pretty entertaining.

  • that is the perfect description of paris hilton

  • That woman next to him looks familiar, but it's hard to get a good look at her.

It's not Joanna Lumley, is it?

  • no it's not jonanna lumley but i know she was a singer or something... gonna have to rack my brains now....

    bare with me...

  • it's loretta swit

    aka hot lips from M*A*S*H

  • @MLG101

    Hazel o' Connor

  • @custardaghost Hazel O' Connor wot?

  • @custardaghost the actress is it's loretta swit

aka hot lips from M*A*S*H .. i read Kenneth's biography a few minutes ago and its mentioned in there

  • a good joke with an undercurrent of real acid disdain, you can hear it in his voice. He also looks quiet frail here poor chap

  • ha that's brilliant!

  • Excellent :D

  • Excellent. His diaries are a brilliant read too.

  • LOL

  • Your welcome. Are you a big fan of Kenneth Williams then?

  • I always thought this was Kenny on the Michael Aspel show in 1987.

  • yes it was ..oops..

had been watching the micheal parkinson most of the day .. derr me.. lol
