Very poignant to watch this and hear the laughter when you know that he was in so much physical pain and he was venting his frustration with the medical profession.
A lot of comedians are really sad. They are brilliant, but often had to develop their comedy to cope with all the dickheads around them or the shit things that might have happened to them... More power to 'em
@kukkaFeatures To me, most truly great comedy comes from tragedy and pathos. Even if it's just slapstick, like Laurel&Hardy, or Buster Keaton, there is pathos at its heart. A lot of stand-ups have a dark side to them, a dark side that perhaps makes their comedy what it is.
@godfreyih He died on 15 April 1988 in his flat. The cause of death was an overdose of barbiturates. An inquest recorded an open verdict, as it was not possible to establish for certain whether his death was a suicide or an accident. However, since he had often wrote in his diaries that suicide was a welcome option, it's likely Williams did intend killing himself, for he believed himself to have terminal cancer, although he did not.
A poor tormented soul, who I'm guessing suffered from terrible depression.
Often such people are blessed with sharpness and wit but cursed with an incurable, crippling illness where you're detached from everybody else and endure mental torment which is what mental illness is.
@71shoelover if you knew about him then you'd know that comment was uncalled for.. he lived a life of celibacy and his internal organs were collapsing were the reasons for this statement of doctors
Such an intensely complex character.Read his diaries, they are absolutely fascinating & give a real insight into the man,not just the "Carry On..." actor.
A specialist knows more and more about less and less, until eventually he knows absolutely everything about absolutely nothing. A generalist knows less and less about more and more, until he knows absolutely nothing about absolutely everything.
Who actually originated this quote would require some research, but it certainly goes back quite a while. As with most good quotes it's been repeated and passed down through many well-known people.
You can see that he absolutely meant it. He was a true comic- and a true tragedian- at the same time in his usual demeanour. It wasn't just to get a cheap laugh. He could sense that the modern world seemed to be becoming less and less about being a 'renaissance man' (perhaps like him) and more and more about the marketing of the modern world where being really good at something very small is more profitable.
@estderoma "It's frightening to think with modern medicine and all the technique available to them...they can't really help you..In the old days, you know, you were better off because nowadays, they are all specialists.Everyone's becoming better and better at less and less"
@estderoma He says "It was far better in the old days. Nowadays, they are "specialists" they are getting better and better at doing LESS AND LESS ! Some day someone will be SUPERB at doing NOTHING !"
Infamy ! Infamy ! ....They've all got it in for me !
It's hardly an original thought, let alone quote. "The general practitioner will know less and less about more and more until he knows nothing about everything. The specialist will know more and more about less and less till he knows everything about nothing." Predates this by quite a bit.
Hi youtubers , I am looking for a copy of the "Joan Rivers Show" (can we talk) BBC 1986 with amonst others Kenneth williams ,Im really after the K.W bit but a full copy would be great, any one? thanks
The coroner gave an Open Verdict to the cause of Mr. Williams' demise, he was unable to find enough evidence to conclusively prove whether it was suicide or an accidental overdose.

I also born that year after his death...At my childhood I saw so many times the Carry on...series because of him. He will be always an essencial thing in my life. Always.
The venom in his voice is brilliant. He was great in the Carry On films but its still a pity that ultimately that is all he is really remembered for. A great talent.
Right on the money! Allopathy leads to psychopathy. Some of these boy doctors are utterly convinced of their omnipotence in spite of the fact that nothing they do produces a cure. Health can never be about the repression of symptoms.
I used to work in the same street where he lived with his mother. We were on the ground floor, when he passed we used to call out to him. If were busy and didn't notice him he would tap on the window and give us a wave.
That wasnt an original quote from him.Sadly I cant remember the author but it was meant to be a comment on the medical profession and on all the specialists for the liver the kidney the eyes the bollocks etc...all of whom lose sight of the whole mensch and can only see their own little bit.
He started out as an actor but found it asier to play the poofter. Kenneth Williams, diaries "they are all doing me nowadays". Larry Grayson. Alan Carr. Christopher Biggins. Graham Norton, "my act is Kenneth Williams".
