A couple (man and wife) in Japan recently died in a similar incident - a group of friends all dug a big hole in the beach sand, and the couple stepped in it to dig more, and the walls collapsed on them. Sadly, they suffocated. It's easy to forget about the awesome weight of dirt and sand and your powerlessness to dig yourself out

@JUJJBFFS When the ditch collapsed he moved his head and body around, compressing the sand around it and making a small air pocket, probably only an inch or so, he passed out almost immediatly

There was enough air left around his body to keep him alive for 30 minutes

He did not regain consiousness untill he became aware of people pulling on him as they lifted him from the hole.

Thank god he was still breathing very shallowly.

It's unlikely that anybody but a fit young man would have survived.
