I'm no expert but here's what they say: suspend activities when lightning is 6 miles away (30 seconds between lightning and thunder). Of course, that's on land, and since the boat mast is clearly the tallest thing around on water, I'd be extra cautious.

Lightning had a very good chance of hitting the boat,
mainly because it's the tallest object around for miles.
Consider yourself very lucky that night.
