I never missed the Doctor on KOME. Steve Weber of The Holy Modal Rounders and sometimes The Fugs (when he fuggin felt like it I guess) wrote this and first recorded it with the afore mentioned Fugs. (pretty sure of this, in 64 or 65. Guess I could go check this on the web but we harvested a week ago so...) Anyway, I like THMR's version.
I blastthis song in my truck. bst ever, got called dwon to the principals office the next day cause of it, n he let me go, cause he liked the song. LOL
It was the first "#1 Most Requested Song of the Week" on Dr. demento's first syndicated show, circa July 1974. It was recorded in 1971, and bubbled under in February 1974.
FYI, Before they were The Holy Modal Rounders, they were The Fuggs. Their album, "It Crawled Into My Hands, Really!" has the outrageous "Constipation Blues"
My buddies and me used to get drunk and make prank calls to Ron Clay and Terry Meiners show on qmf (LRs before that) and they use to put us on the radio
There was a radio show in Louisville, KY that always opened up with this when they came on at 5:30 in the morning. It was "The Show With No Name" on 95.7 WQMF. It was back in the 80's. Pretty funny stuff. One person from it, Ron Clay, died of Cancer in the late 90's I think. The other, Terry Meiners, is a mainstay in Louisville on 840 WHAS radio in the afternoons (although I think he is sort of mailing it in now). This tune brings back some good memories.
Remember it well. Ron Clay, Terry Meiners, Troy Roebuck, Barry Harmon, Jamie Douglas, Mel, Duke Meyer, Future Bob and all the characters like Fireman Ed, Frosty the Clown, Red, The Bone Brothers( space, it be the final frontier and it be dark too), Beaver Bits, Jack Nicholson, The Knerd Brothers and many more. I met Ron Clay and he was nothing like the character on the radio. Hell of nice guy. Those were the good old days. Nothing like today. Google WAKY and find the link to WQMF . Good stuff
I used to love hearing this song on the Doctor Demento Show in Los Angeles. It was on Sunday nights(I think), and was an hour long. All the music was crazy like this. It was fun.
Christopher Walkins SOOOO needs to do a cover of this song... Love it! Dr. Demento forever...

Yeah, I learned it from Demento, too, Red. I turned around and taught it to my high school tennis team. Made those bus rides bearable.

I prefer the Fugs version, but this is one of those works of art that will transcend no matter who is performing it.

@chefbard It's really sad to think in 1987 KMET-the innovator in album oriented rock
became the Wave-blasphemous. A friend of mine once refered to the Wave as
"yuppie bullshit."
chrisbacos 5 months ago
Haven't heard this in over 34 years. Was thinking about boobs alot and... WTF?
coal4life 7 months ago
How this got radio airplay I'll never know...
alshouse 7 months ago
@alshouse The reason KMET got away with it is because no one complained to either station
management or the FCC. Besides, no one in the Dr.'s audience was going to complain.

This song was on one of my Dr. Demento albums. I laughed every time I heard it. Still do! :)
