So,logically thinking as I do..they can't/won't use 'Nigger' in a remake because 'times have changed' (quote Steven Fry, scriptwriter)..But,when/if the original is shown on TV or buy the DVD 'Nigger' is still there?So that's OK because that's how it was made..How can any historical event movie be made if things are changed? Ah the Revisionist Historians out in force over this one! Nigger came from the Latin for Black. I remember a paint colour Nigger Brown (much darker than Donkey Brown)! My father had a black Rear Gunner called Snowy. Black & Whites flew together in the RAF (unlike US), but the RAF mixed ranks air crews had to split up when on the ground (unlike US). They went down the pub to drink together. Time the role played by Blacks & Indians was better known & respected on both sides:)

Here's a way to resolve the Nigger issue in the remake.

Peter Jackson should go Hollywood with Samuel L Jackson (the only man who could get away it) as Guy Gibson & Al "hwo-ar" Pacino as Hitler.

When Hitler kills Nigger (a bit of plot change there but if there are any 'drive-bys' in this movie, Sam/Guy will be doing them), Gibson could go all 'high concept' on his Nazi ass - "I'm gunna drop those m*thaf**kin bombs on your m*thaf**ckin damns, Hitler!".

A sure winner don't you think?

To my fellow Americans......you are fools. The word "nigger" in England during WW2 had nothing to do with race. The dog was named because of its color. It is we Americans that have the problem because we are the ones who came along years later and made the "N' word what it is today. And it still almost applies only here in the USA. I am certain that the brave aircrews of the 617 squadron had no time nor any reason to be anti black. Many never made it home anyway.

I read in the press recently that "They" ARE going to remake it. Stephen Fry, who is working on the script, has said that, like it or not, the name "Nigger" is just not acceptable in this day and age so he has renamed him "Digger". Has a nice Ozzy ring to it I think. I just hope to God that the new script does not have a token American (no offence but there were none involved in the raid) to help with US sales or any "love interest". The lack of these made the original such a great film.

Why remake one of the best war films ever made? It was of its time. The events surrounding Guy Gibson's dog, Nigger, and his unfortunate death were true events. The film is a tribute to 617 Squadron and to Barnes Wallis; there are no romantic sub-plots, and the attitude of the persons involved is spot-on too. too. Barnes Wallis was a genius, and his reasons for making the bombs are expressed eloquently in the movie. If you get the chance, please see the whole film.
