He was guest of an Italian TV show a few months ago: he said that Phelps is a fantastic swimmer and that he would able to win 8 or 9 events (yes, 9!) at Beijing 2008.

I was listening to Michael Jordan on the BBC tonight rubbishing todays swimming. 18 world records already. He said he could have won 20 golds if they had running backwards, sideways, flapping arms... he has very valid points. Unlike Spitz, todays athletes are all tained with did they or didn't they? drugs question.
the east germans were drugging during the 70s and im sure others were too...spitz stands alone, because unlike phelps, there was no speedo paying him millions...he had to really sacrifice to train, and had nowhere near the tech that benefits phelps...full head of hair and stache...no cap....no goggles...if spitz was in prime form today, he would be challenging phelps...
in 72, there were very few corporate sponsorships...the olympic team had to beg corporations for money...it really wasnt until ueberoth came on the scene and explained to corporations why sponsorship would benefit them, that they finally came around...
Brabon, Spitz cashed in every chance he got. He should thank Phelps for stirring up interest in him again so he can raise his speaking fee. The fact that he wasn't invited to the 2008 olympics gave him even more opportunites for TV shows asking him his opinions. Without Phelps, Spitz would just be another page in the yearbook of 1972.

But I also recognize they are mostly a product of their times.

Back then swimmers wore no fat skins, goggles, or caps. In addition Mark even had a mustache and he was still a beast.

Spitz swam 100m butterfly in 54.27 in 1972, which was an unbelievable result.
Training, techniques, swimming pools have improved so much in 36 years.
I reckon Mark Spitz, were he 20yo today, would be able to swim that event in less than 50s.
