Stunningly good! "(She's Not) The Little Girl I Once Knew" is one of my all time favorite Beach Boy songs... and you have nailed it! Excellent version of Help Me Rhonda too!
You guys should perform in the US . You're the only tribute group that remains true to the Beach Boys sound and I like it and your group . You should perform along with Brian and his fantastic band !
It's nice to know that, not that long ago, you guys existed and put on this amazing concert. Congratulations on your musicianship and ability to transmit not just the body, but also the spirit, of Brian Wilson's genius.
Absolutely awesome - my hat's off to the Fendertones for assembling a band that can accurately reproduce these great songs live. The organ tone on the break on "Little Girl" was about the only thing that caught my ear - it was a bit too "throaty" or "Hammond-ish", but who cares - these guys put on an awesome show, and I'd love to see a full-length DVD of this show. Truly a great salute to the Beach Boys/
No, they don't need any help from Rhonda, they need help from Spector. the fact that there's many singers doesn't matter, they need more musicians, and it's not supposed to sound like that singing wise anyway.
@M3town3 Phil Spector, seriously? They've nailed this song, it's spot-on, Brian would be honored. Have you ever even heard the Beach Boys studio version?
@SuperAde1974 I've heard it many times, it is recorded with a lot more studio musicians with leakage between their microphones. Phil Spector taught him that Brian himself said. That's a fact. I don't think Brain would think this is a very good version of the song, not necessarily.
There's never been a better cover, ever; these young guys did a masterful job. I can only imagine the preparation, practice and hours put into the arrangement of all their songs posted. I would love to hear of them getting together for the BB's 50th; I would fly to see it anywhere!
The Fendertones rock. Closest I've ever heard anyone come to replicating the original Beach Boys harmonies including Brian's band. Also the guy in the grey and black shirt doing harmonies on Rhonda with the guy in the blue shirt looks exactly like George Harrison circa Revolver.
I guess that the best compliment I can give this is just to say that this never fails to lift me up and make me feel better, no matter how lousy I feel before hearing it. Thanks to all involved in this and to Edwin for uploading it.
Personally I think Brian Wilson should give the band permission to change their name to "The Beach Boys" since most of the original group is gone anyway. They're just as good if not better on some of the songs.
Holy Crap!! this gave me shivers!!! AWESOME!!! Keep the BB tunes alive!!! Its amazing to see how many voices it takes to reproduce the multi-track sound of the Beach Boys...these guys really nail it! awesome!!
Wow, I've been singing these songs a million times and still haven't nailed it like these guys. Could it possibly be that, by some outside chance, I may not be as talented as these guys? The thought did cross my mind. Seriously, these guys are terrific!!
There's not that many band that do Beach Boy music cause of the vocals. These guys are really good. Don't forget this is live so it's not gonna be exactly like the record. They really pull it off.
I LOVE the way The Fendertones rocked up Little Girl I Once Knew... really makes it swing! Fantastic version. I am so blown away by all your videos, as a musician I know it's taken you all a whole bunch of love and dedication to pull off such an ambitious project like this. It's great to see this music kept live, fresh and young in the 21st Century. It belongs to and emanates from youth, and you totally own it here. Thank you endlessly.
wfmu has a tape somewhere in their archives i think its bob brainens show its called the little girl i once knew sessions with mike blowing takes and differant combinations of instruments.
you have that spot on gtr82. bw layered in numerous overlaps to produce the sound we have loved forever. these guys are doing blended together one time...great job fendertones!
i've loved the bb's since the 60's. no one has ever come close to replicating the sound like these guys. phenomenal job! they need to advertise then tour...the bb fans would come out in droves i'm sure.
This really is live....and a shit-load better than any of the other tribute bands out there, most of whom post vids with studio recorded audio dubbed over....
yes very good indeed to me .I was honoured to see the beach boys live at Finsbury park in london uk in the 60s and they did not allways reproduce the studio sound on stage I can assure you, still great of course though !! This group do a great job to me ,far better than when I have seen the ''red hot chilli peppers do ''I get around ''
My favorite BB tune. This song is where it all came together: the fun/upbeat sound of the early songs with the complexities and innovation of Pet Sounds.
Didn't Carl do the falsetto parts in the Beach Boy's tunes? Which I imagine are quite hard to do, but the Fendertones pull off. Maybe there were several contributors in the band filling those high notes? I don't mind being put straight btw, it's educational!:)
OK I know when I'm beaten. Let's split hairs, in the interests of healthy debate. Since Brian stopped touring after a certain date (you'll know when) he didn't do the falsetto parts on stage. I know they got Glen Campbell in at one point to replace Brian, but I can't imagine he did falsetto? I'm not saying it was Carl, but I definitely saw him singing God Only Knows on stage in a fairly high register. That's what made me think he always did falsetto for the band.
Prior to Pet Sounds, I hear Brian's falsetto as flute-like and flawless. I hear Carl as a tenor; some say "athletic tenor." He could produce falsetto, but not like Brian.
I also agree with Brian when he said Mike Love's voice sounds like Mickey Mouse.
Ah, you see you've forced me to resort to the Wikipedia entry for Glen Campbell/Beach Boys. He replaced Brian on the 1964/65 tours and did sing falsetto on tour as well as playing bass guitar. I thought the guy who sang the Witchita Lineman wouldn't have had the vocal range for falsetto. So thanks for educating me with regard to the Beach Boys.
Glen Campbell toured with them for four months; then Bruce Johnston.
Brian would not tour after Dec. '64 but continued to perform with the group on television; which is why retail products that include the live TV performances draw good interest from afficianados.
btw I notice there are 8 Fendertones contributing to the vocal and yet the Beach Boys were famous for 4 part harmonies. Did this literally mean only 4 contributors? Indeed when Brian wrote the music, did he have the 4 parts already in mind or was that something they developped in the studio? Or do 4 part harmonies have obvious elements to be performed around the central melody, ie one sings high, one sings low, but there all basically singing the same tune? Would be grateful to know the answer.
4 part harmonies, doubled in studio. To replicate the studio sound ( Phil Spector's 'wall of sound' format, I believe) in a live performance, The Fendertones need 8 voices singing the 4 parts.
If so did the Beach Boys replicate this themselves live with 8 contributors? Again no expert but with Carl, Bruce Johnston, Al Jardine, Mike Love and Dennis, excluding Brian, that's only five members for a live Beach Boys performance, where they surely replicated the studio sound?
Brian had those harmonies in his toolbox, so to speak. The Four Freshmen were the real vocal innovators and the foundation for Brian's harmonies. Brian tweaked that sound, added his falsetto, and layered harmonies to achieve his signature.
Wiki search on 'harmony' and you will find a detailed account of "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star," which is also Brian's "Surfer Girl."
Another "urban legend" has it that Brian was sitting in his car (at home after a date) and the Disney song from Pinocchio, "When You Wish Upon A Star" came on the radio and that was his inspiration to writing SURFER GIRL.
I so agree with Mr J. H. Phillips; as a life time fan & affecianado, you guys do this music with genuine TLC & respect. KUDOS. And, please stay with it! Wolfsky9
Great tribute - these guys were doing amazing interpretations, very faithful to the originals. The dance during the solo on Help Me, Rhonda is great. Everyone is having fun, fun, fun! Thanks Edwin and the "Tones".
I would like to know more about your performance, technically speaking. I am very impressed. How often and where do you perform ? Are you under-written ? what audio software (if any) is involved. Your group sounds closer toe the record than the BBs live. I mean that as a compliment, just would love to know more.
But you have to admit that this only proves the awe you should have for the Beach Boys who pulled this off with just 4 or 5 voices (albeit overdubbed)
But better than anything the surviving members are putting out today live!
This is better than Beach Boys (not the Mike and Brice tribute Show, which is still 'nice') did when they released this song . I heard them do this live the same week it was released and it was POOR !! No Brian. Johnston sang a weak falsetto Carl and Al sang. The guitars were almost inaudible.
Fendertones is the best I've ever heard and I have seen the BBs live over 100 times, Great song too !! Thanks and with all due repect to everyone's opinion. JHP
I agree, this is not the first song that comes to mind with the Beach Boys, but it's a gem with lots of little lyrical and musical twists, and these fellows did a great job with it.
The way their voices blend and vibrate together, these guys sound amazingly like the original Beach Boys. Actually closer to the original than any other band still performing. Great work!
I've seen both Brian Wilson and also the Mike Love-Bruce Johnston "Beach Boys". These guys stand up well to Brian Wilson's outfit. You blow the Mike Love outfit AWAY!!
Do the Fendertones have any original material? You guys and girls have some SERIOUS talent.
Ever notice...there's always some flaming asshole with no talent who wants to post "not live" if the performers are good? It's live you mouth breathing moron. they just happen to have talent. there really should be a minimum IQ requirement for posting. I guess you think the audience singing along is pre recorded too.
I saw this a year ago and have since corresponded with the fellow that leads this group. It was a labor of love, I don't think they will be able to perform again. The Fendertones are good because they treat the music symphonically. Just because the lyrics are adolescent does not mean that the totality is not on the same level as a Mozart opera. Wonderful.
this is real scary...how could these guys be so good....and i have been a beach boy fan since the early 60's.....let me know where they are playing and i'll go.....amazing, to say the least...
Yeah but when Brian recorded, at times he over dubbed the voices, ie more than the band had. But to be fair the band did so well to just get near the studio production
Brian Wilson/Beach Boy fans are waiting for your cover of Break Away - Add Some Music - Let Him Run Wild- Girl From New York City - All Summer Long ...
{Click BB45s for playlist of 100+ rare Beach Boys videos}
Great job! Just figuring out all the parts is quite a challange. No wonder Brian has trouble communicating other ways - too much going on in that head.
Fyi... the guy in the black shirt who looks like he was directing actually was directing. It was a big production and took months of preparation. I was able to be at the show and it was fantastic! The video hardly does it justice.
I have heard BW's band about 6 times in the past 8 years. As good as they are - and they are much older, more experienced musicians and singers - they've got NOTHING on these kids! We are seeing a new era of classical musicians here; those who are dedicated to performing our modern composers' works with the greatest degree of accuracy and respect. God, how I wish I was in this band...
I totally agree these guys are 100% better than the Wondermints.Brian should drop those guys and hire The Fendertones. This cover of Little Girl I Once Knew has blown me away, such a hard song to perform properly
What's with the guy in the black shirt at the far right? He comes in and out of the picture on every song than at the end of each song he goes in front of the stage as if he's directing.
The guy who comes out from [stage] right is, among other things, doubling the lead vocal from the vicinity of the grass hut. This was apparently done to avoid distraction from the on-stage lead vocalist. (See comments on other FT videos for more details.)
Was this a one time thing? Where was the concert? Is it possible that there would be another concert where we could have FunFunFun?Thanks Edwin - Even if this was all you had, it was Great!
The Beach Boys never sounded in concert like their records sounded. There was no way to do it with only four or five voices. You need ten or twelve to get Brian Wilson's layered vocal sound. What you see here is the only way to really get it right in concert. Listen to Al Jardine's comment on Family and Friends Live in Vegas: "We never had enough voices (in concert) to sing all the parts."
Stop slighting this cover band because it uses a ton of people to sing the vocal parts. They do this because Brian overdubbed the vocals on the BB's soundtracks, the Fendertones replicate that overdubbed sound by using multiple singers for the overdubbing effect. That is how much attention to detail the Fendertones go to to replicate the awesome sounds of the BBs.
Man, I wish you guys would do every Beach Boys song and post them on here! I keep listening to them and still get blown away each time by their amazing fidelity to the original sound. Never thought I'd live to see somebody channeling the spirit of Al Jardine!! Great great job.
ncarolinaluv..that is not Brian Wilson's backup band. These guys actually replicate the original sound from the old BB's records like you would have heard back in the day and on vinyl, while Brian Wilson's band although great musician's replicate the sound but with a more modern almost fake sound.
Folklore: The claim was the radio stations were afraid the pauses would set of the "dead air" alarm, but the alarm delay was on the order of 60 seconds, while the pauses are 8 beats (< 10 seconds).
More likely: It was just "too different". (Remember, this was mid-1960's AM radio ...)
its the rebirth of the surf sound, beach boys forever , these boys do a great job, just like the concerts back in the 60's of the real beach boys, hope this boys carry on !!!!!
Bravo! The music of The Beach Boys will definitely live on as long as there are groups like the Fendertones to keep the legacy alive. The musicianship is beyond excellence! If Brian Wilson ever needs a back up band, these guys are it! Love and Mercy.
Another fabulous performance. I love the enthusiasm and happiness you send out from the stage. You can come over to the UK any time!!! Thanks for keeping the best music in the world alive.
Absolutley phenomenal!! Thank you! You gave the exact feeling a Beach Boys concert gave to so many! What a gift!

@garymichael1950 I was blown away first time I saw one of their videos, sounds even better than the original record.

Wonderful.

Brian Wilson should do a final world tour...with the Fendertones. I would pay £100 for a ticket (NO £200 !!!)
Even the name is fitting...Brian Wilson and the Fendertones !!!

These guys are really good. What's more impressive is the Beach Boys did this sound with half the number of people.

Yeah but when Brian recorded, at times he over dubbed the voices, ie more than the band had. But to be fair the band did so well to just get near the studio production

This cover of Little Girl I Once Knew has blown me away, such a hard song to perform properly
plasticsoulman66 3 years ago 2
What's with the guy in the black shirt at the far right? He comes in and out of the picture on every song than at the end of each song he goes in front of the stage as if he's directing.
Guess he wants his 15 minutes of fame.
Joerotty 3 years ago
The guy who comes out from [stage] right is, among other things, doubling the lead vocal from the vicinity of the grass hut. This was apparently done to avoid distraction from the on-stage lead vocalist. (See comments on other FT videos for more details.)

Solypey 3 years ago
The Beach Boys never sounded in concert like their records sounded. There was no way to do it with only four or five voices. You need ten or twelve to get Brian Wilson's layered vocal sound. What you see here is the only way to really get it right in concert. Listen to Al Jardine's comment on Family and Friends Live in Vegas: "We never had enough voices (in concert) to sing all the parts."

Wow, a thousands guys singing and sounding
like the original Beach Boys who were 5.
This shows how fabulous they were and that
they really marked our lives in the 60's!
atletico45 3 years ago
Stop slighting this cover band because it uses a ton of people to sing the vocal parts. They do this because Brian overdubbed the vocals on the BB's soundtracks, the Fendertones replicate that overdubbed sound by using multiple singers for the overdubbing effect. That is how much attention to detail the Fendertones go to to replicate the awesome sounds of the BBs.

ncarolinaluv..that is not Brian Wilson's backup band. These guys actually replicate the original sound from the old BB's records like you would have heard back in the day and on vinyl, while Brian Wilson's band although great musician's replicate the sound but with a more modern almost fake sound.

love the way the cut the lights during the pause -- heard radio stations would not play this because of the pauses???? with the orig. Beach Boys.
ncarolinaluv 3 years ago
Folklore: The claim was the radio stations were afraid the pauses would set of the "dead air" alarm, but the alarm delay was on the order of 60 seconds, while the pauses are 8 beats (< 10 seconds).
More likely: It was just "too different". (Remember, this was mid-1960's AM radio ...)
