YES, everyone who can vote should. But if you're against gays having equal rights and will actually vote to keep us from having them, don't bother hanging out here.
LOL @ that last part. Hey, after voting for Clinton in 1992 I found myself continually wonder what I'd done - sadly, it didn't keep me all that quiet.
Given that you're a moderate, I understand you voting for Clinton.
Actually, I recently discovered that Clinton was a moderate Democrat, and wanted to preside as such, but he received pressure from the left once in office to be more liberal than his actual leanings.
Having Clinton back... wow, what an interesting concept. Gotta wonder what, if anything, they would do differently if given the chance.
Another big lesson for me with that 8 year term was accepting that even politicians we vote for are bound to do at least one or two things we wish they wouldn't. Tough pill to swallow, but that's part of growing up... maybe...?
And sometimes I think I'm moderate only because I'm lazy.
Did you mistype? Because this almost reads like you're saying that if he disappoints people who voted for him, they don't have any business complaining about that.
I fervently disagree. The only thing that would discredit someone in my opinion is if they didn't take part in the voting process at all. To hold to what you're saying, we'd have to be mindreaders and have the ability to predict who's lying and who isn't.
you don't have to be psychic to look at the facts and see obama was for the bailout, he was for fisa bill, he reverted on his rhetoric about nafta and iraq. of course people don't make time to research such facts even if it's right there in frotn of their face on youtube. can't balme anyone but themselves.
My daughter and I voted today. I felt like there wasnt a lot of choice in the Presidential, bad or worse. But SO MANY women went through SO MUCH to make voting available to us... How can I ignore that history? We were lucky, no lines, no trouble. Walk in, show ID and vote! So I hope everyone else dhas as easy a time of it. Irregardless. Get out and do it or ShutYerTrap!
Yeah, when you think of how many years that movement took to finally get women the vote, it's incredible that we now have an elected president that's even 1/2 black given how recent the Civil Rights Act was put in place.
Someone may refuse to vote and if I were an American I may have taken that route. The non-voter is still a taxpayer so I feel has the right to a voice.
There's a difference between having the right to speak up on something and having credibility when doing so - that's what I failed to elaborate on in this video.
Too late for a re-shoot.
And actually I had a couple specific people in mind while recording this - people who complain constantly and always tell everyone else "we need change" but never vote. From where I sit, that's total hypocrisy.
And actually I'm not nearly as fired up as this comment suggests. Just voted so I'm happy and calm.
We had to wait over an hour to vote the Friday before last but from the projections I've been hearing, that's nothing compared to the lines they expect tomorrow.
The early voting lines were insane out here too, but today was very fast, very quiet, very sedate even. I didn't see more than maybe 20 people in the polling place when I cast my ballot over half an hour ago.
As for waiting to hear the results... not sure I have the stomach, but will most likely wind up at the edge of my seat anyway.
I considered it but figured standing in line and then physically punching the holes in my ballot card would help keep my busy while waiting for the results to come in.
I kept my mouth shut but regret it now. Although I doubt I could have changed his mind. It freaks me out that people are so apathetic. I wonder if they have even been awake this past year?!
You'll continue to be glad you did years down the road. I passed on my first opportunity to vote in a presidential election here in 1988 and have always regretted it (not to the point of losing sleep, but still).
Yep...I voted already...but I must admit, I don't think we really have much of a choice in the matter. And what's with all the propositions this time around?? We have 12 in CA! Lots of reading on those! LOL NO on 8!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :-)
I've already voted. Yayyy me!!! OK, I'll admit to being a little (or a lot) slack in that regard in the past but I've turned over a new leaf. Now my complaining rights are officially in order, LOL. I do still get to complain even if who I voted for does something I don't like don't I? I mean if I don't get to complain I might have to rethink this whole voting thing, LOL.
Well I did give each of them ballots to fill out. Babs barfed on her's. Carly buried her's in the litter box. And Suzy keeps sniffing her's like she smells a rat. I'll get them turned in to election officials eventually. It'll be up to them to dechipher them. I'm sure the Florida hanging chad controversy will pale in comparison, LOL.
Voting is compulsory here, we get fined if we don't. So those who don't want to vote.. usually write their own personal messages on the ballot papers, no less.. ie. null and void.
I LOVE that about Australia. It would completely tick off tons of people here if such a thing was instituted, but in the long run it might do us some good.
Either way, I've seen this election rip a few friendships apart, not just because one favors a candidate the other doesn't like, but just the issue of voting itself has - as you've seen - caused some tension.
It's sad, but hopefully after the dust settles people can meet back in the middle again somehow.
As a naturalized citizen the "hope of America" has tarnished for me these past few years (although I still have hope). It's not just the major parties, both equally own the divisive lack of leadership. It's also the American people who have backed themselves into one corner or another. American traits can be wonderful and a curse..."sticking to your guns" can also be stubbornness.
If we don't stop this behavior, it's not the economy we have to worry about...
I know I've lost friends on YT this year, quite a few of them, because of the political-culture war engagements.
I'm a precinct poll worker and for the first election in years I'm not looking forward to it. This election worries me a lot.
We'd probably have great conversations. My BA is in Social Science and History and I'm always thinking of "the social, economic and political" impact. I'm preparing to (still in the "I think" stage) get a doctorate, probably starting next year. lot of work.
The political process DOES NOT work. It works ONLY for those with the money and the power already - NOT for the common man. NOT voting IS a vote against the system that is broken, corrupt, embarassing and wrong. VOTE FOR WHAT? VOTE FOR WHOM? NOT ONE of these politicians is trustworthy, honorable or without their self-serving power trips. Vote for the lesser of two evils? WHY would I vote for evil to keep evil OUT of office. Answer is - I wouldn't, won't and don't. Not worth the effort.
When those in power are the ones who make the decisions as to who gets elected do you think for one minute your vote counts? Ask Al Gore. THAT was not the popular vote that got Bush in - it was the electoral votes - again those with the power and the clout to accomplish their agenda. I don't trust ANY politicians. Look at what they've done to this country so far. YOU think I don't have a right to complain? Curt I would have thought YOU would be of a different mind. I hope you're not duped.
TonyDi, take a deep breath and know this: I wouldn't deny you your constitutional rights.
And I know the system is flawed (don't get me started on the electoral college!), but if we respond with silence, we hand the entire system over to corrupt politicians on a silver platter.
Looking at history, it's taken lifetimes to correct these kinds of things, but it only happened because citizens continued to participate. I'm convinced that not voting isn't the answer.
Curt my dear friend, if you konw the system is flawed and it's those politicians who seek their power at our expense and you VOTE for one of them, then aren't YOU party to perpetuating the flaw by allowing it with your vote to "a lesser of two evils"? Someone I know had a good idea - on the ballot have a space for "none of the above" then they'd have to start over (as if we could stand it) and find a candidate honest enough to do for the people what these politicians have not to date. An idea!
P.S. I still love you and always will...as well as respect your opinion and your ideas BECAUSE you're my friend and that is better than any politicial ideology!!
Ditto my friend. Hopefully after the dust settles on this one there can be a return to some sense of 'normalcy' ...wait... did we ever have that in the first place? LOL
Voting in the presidential election didn't give me any joy this year. But voting No on that fucking Prop 8 bullshit gave me SHEER pleasure, I gotta tell ya. I even grunted as I pressed down on the ballot.
Curt I have to disagree with you here (a little). By not voting you do not what so ever give up your constitutional right to complain. But you do give up your right for me to take you seriously
When you go to vote carry the following information with you in case you or someone you know is denied the right to vote. Your local campaign headquarters phone number. Election Protection Hotline
866-OUR-VOTE (1-866-687-8683)
Web site 866ourvote(dot)org
If you feel like you are being singled out because you "look" like an immigrant, if a poll worker is intimidating you, take down the poll worker's name and names of witnesses and call the Election Protection Coalition at 1-866-Our-Vote.
I filled out my ballot, now I just have to walk to the county Auditor office and bitch to them about forcing mail in voting. I hate vote by mail. I prefered going to a polling place, now everyone in the county is forced to vote by mail.
LOL. She walked up while I was just starting to watch and that was her first comment. It seemed kinda funny at the moment. I thought you looked fine. lol. have a great day. Smiley:D
LOL, at least they have something to do if they cant vote. Better, vote and see if you can do it behind the little curtain....that would be a thrill....lol
I HATE both choices! And I HATE both parties! I'll probably pick a lesser of 2 evils. But our entire political system sucks! Of all the things I have to deal with in my life, including daily extreme pain, politics, and this election gets me more depressed and more discouraged than anything.
FO sho- I'm with you on that one. If you ever end up buying them, after paying $160(sale price), you always regret not going bare feet. It's lies. That shit doesn't make you jump higher at allll. :(
By default, everyone in Arizona has the option to get a mail-in ballot. I opted for that service. However, the US Consulate will provide you with a ballot as well.
My polling place has always been pretty quiet too. I wonder if this time around I'll actually have to contend with a crowd - as much as it would suck to wait in line, I'd be ecstatic to see that.
Thanks for attaching your video as a response here, btw. I realize I won't change your mind but I'm glad you connected that with this one all the same.
However, neither presidential candidate impresses me this year, and I don't expect to be living in this state long enough to enjoy, or suffer from, the results of any local elections. I'm not even registered to vote...one of those things that sorta just slipped my mind when I moved.
Like I just told someone else in a reply, don't get me started on the electoral college (500 characters wouldn't cover it anyway). But here's what I'm hoping: that the turnout continues to improve, the discrepancy btwn actual votes and electoral votes continues to be scrutinized, and then technology is used to fix what we have. That's just one of the reasons I fight my own cynicism and turn out for these things.
But wait... I know a few people who were complaining and didn't vote the last FEW times, and will probably still not vote and will still complain, what should I do to them? hmmm?
Have learned how difficult it is to vote sometimes in the US. Just stunned. My son voted for the 1st time in Canada in Oct., went to the polls with his ID and his bank statement to confirm his mailing address. The whole process took maybe 5 minutes - me, my husband, and our son. The polling station was at the local public school.
The process is easy. The emotional baggage that a lot of people carry where this is concerned, however, is pretty intense. I can't blame them for feeling discouraged, either.
But we gotta keep showing up for these things, otherwise the corrupt ones will just continue to walk all over us.
After seeing the movie Iron Jawed Angles years ago, I will never NOT vote again. It's just too darn important.
I must admit I didn't know my women's suffrage history until I saw that movie. While I am sure it was 'Hollywood-ized' somewhat; the message still came thru loud and clear for me.
I don't think I've seen that movie, but I love that there's at least one out there telling that story in some form. Yeah, the movement had tons of setbacks and lasted more than half a century.
There was a guy in my creative writing class a few years ago that complained about the government all the time. Then, when election day came around, he refused to vote. I was so pissed. I mean, I wasn't 18 yet and couldn't vote, but he was and refused to. And he COMPLAINED ALL THE TIME! I wrote a poem about it in class that day. One of the best I've written lol.
His explanation was that there was no point. He seemed to think that the elections were fixed. One of those conspiracy theory guys. It really bugged me.
Why should I vote? 96 percent of "We the People" just got done telling our congress, incuding both frontrunning cadidates that we didn't want the bailout. Yet, they said, yeah, we know, but we're doing it anyway.
That proves our "voice" doesn't count, no matter how loudly we protest.
We had a government advertising campaign here in the UK a couple of years ago that said pretty much the same thing. Also, people who think they're making a point by not voting are BARMY.
This will be my 1st time voting since I just turned 18 this past Aug. Im glad that I can vote this election. This election is going to make history in my eyes! And I know that I want to be apart of it!
If you don't have transportation or need help, call your local party headquarters; they will provide a volunteer. If you have the means to take the day = be a volunteer. And you can complain about your arthritis, but not about smog, taxes, the government, the war, the peace, the roads, the schools or the price of gas! Curt is right! Go VOTE!!
Great vid. Voting is important in national elections;even more importantly in state & local elections. State & local elections are where we have most control. The people that impact our lives directly: Aldermen, Mayor, Attorney Gen, Gov, State Senators, US Senators & Congress People. If we are voting in local elections we are more informed of the issues relating directly to us. The office of Pres is important; however, if we are electing the right people at home we are far better represented.
Hi Curt. Great message. Joe and I mailed our absentee ballots last week. Now all we can do is hope that the election isn't stolen by cheating (like I believe it was in the past two elections). I am trying my best to stay positive. My fingers are crossed for a good outcome. Peace and Love. JoAnn
AMEN Curt! And to those who complain about the lines this is one Floridian who waited 3 hours with no complaints. Get over it. You either want your voice heard or not. It's that simple. I bet the same people who complain would wait however if it was a line for Disney *rolling eyes* 4 8 years we've had tape over our mouths, Time to take it off.
I guess I'll get back to you tomorrow morning to let you know if we need to put the tape back over our mouths for another 4 yrs. God I'm on edge! FL has their own ver of amdt 2 { If passed it would allow all domestic rights and marriages to only be allowed by men/wom couples }Looks like their isnt enough supporters to say no to it.I'm so disheartened. So here's to hopping for real change! Otherwise I'll pass the tape around :)
If it's any consolation I'm a little worried at this end too. And not just over that, but over our Prop 4, which would help undo the progress made by Roe v. Wade.
I've got my "I Voted" sticker plastered on my shirt, am feeling very relieved that this part is over, but don't know whether to sit or stand right now.
Did it. And I feel great about voting for the first non white President. It could lead to good and bad things. But I hope for the best just like every other time I have voted.
What I meant was the people who repeatedly voice their disappointment in how one politician or another has performed, but they never used their opportunity to vote them out when they had it. It's difficult to take those people seriously.
As for other issues involved, you're right. It's not black and white. A lot of people are disheartened by how things have played out.
I firmly believe, however, that giving up on the process is a big mistake.
I used to publicly state, and believe, exactly what you just conveyed. "Used to" being the key words. I understand now, that some choose not to vote as a vote of no confidence, in either candidate, the broken 2 party system, or the fact that a viable 3rd party representative will never be a reality again. Then there is that whole inalienable rights thing. That damn pesky Freedom of Speech.
Well I think what I failed to convey in this one was that I don't wish to deny freedom of speech. It's just a matter of being able to take people seriously when they complain ad nauseum but never get out there to do anything about it. And there are even other ways to participate in addition to or besides voting, yet certain loud mouths never do that either.
Those folks inspire nothing more than eye rolling from me anymore.
I'm only voting for McCain because I want: The war to continue for another hundred years: Radically conservative Supreme Court appointments: A continued decline in the economy: And Palin to become president when the sick old guy kicks the bucket soon after being elected.
very true, I believe exactly that. Its why I vote for some obscure party over here in england, that way, I can always complain! XD

Funny how gays preach "tolerance" but are intolerant of all that do not accepts gays. Contradictory.
Plus, I did not know this was a gay blog spot. I am out of here.
donguidoxxx 3 years ago
If you're actively trying to deny an entire group of people their fundamental rights, you are an enemy to that group.
Besides, you obviously only favor "tolerance" so long as that adds up to you imposing your own bigtory on others.
Jeez, fellah, who did you think you were fooling here?
OhCurt 3 years ago
I am confused...
In this video, you strongly urge folks to vote.
But in your video blog on the Gay Marriage ammentments passing, you tell the YES voters to unsubscribe from your videos.
So maybe you want folks to vote... but only if they vote the way you do?
We're all different, with our own world views. That does not make any side worse than the other.

Nothing to be confused about.

OhCurt 3 years ago
Curt my dear friend, if you konw the system is flawed and it's those politicians who seek their power at our expense and you VOTE for one of them, then aren't YOU party to perpetuating the flaw by allowing it with your vote to "a lesser of two evils"? Someone I know had a good idea - on the ballot have a space for "none of the above" then they'd have to start over (as if we could stand it) and find a candidate honest enough to do for the people what these politicians have not to date. An idea!
TonyDi 3 years ago
P.S. I still love you and always will...as well as respect your opinion and your ideas BECAUSE you're my friend and that is better than any politicial ideology!!
TonyDi 3 years ago
Ditto my friend. Hopefully after the dust settles on this one there can be a return to some sense of 'normalcy' ...wait... did we ever have that in the first place? LOL
Voting in the presidential election didn't give me any joy this year. But voting No on that fucking Prop 8 bullshit gave me SHEER pleasure, I gotta tell ya. I even grunted as I pressed down on the ballot.
:-)

Curt I have to disagree with you here (a little). By not voting you do not what so ever give up your constitutional right to complain. But you do give up your right for me to take you seriously
mikma 3 years ago
Actually, it sounds like you and I are in perfect agreement here. It's very much an issue of credibility with me.

OhCurt 3 years ago
When you go to vote carry the following information with you in case you or someone you know is denied the right to vote. Your local campaign headquarters phone number. Election Protection Hotline
866-OUR-VOTE (1-866-687-8683)
Web site 866ourvote(dot)org
If you feel like you are being singled out because you "look" like an immigrant, if a poll worker is intimidating you, take down the poll worker's name and names of witnesses and call the Election Protection Coalition at 1-866-Our-Vote.
Ender1zero1 3 years ago
Thank you - that's terrific information to have.
Because ya never know.
OhCurt 3 years ago
I filled out my ballot, now I just have to walk to the county Auditor office and bitch to them about forcing mail in voting. I hate vote by mail. I prefered going to a polling place, now everyone in the county is forced to vote by mail.

Did you know voting is compulsory in some countries? I wish it were in the US.

I would too, actually. Something tells me that various politicians count on many of us staying home, of course.

MGB1000 3 years ago
I HATE both choices! And I HATE both parties! I'll probably pick a lesser of 2 evils. But our entire political system sucks! Of all the things I have to deal with in my life, including daily extreme pain, politics, and this election gets me more depressed and more discouraged than anything.

What gets lots amidst the media frenzy is the list of other candidates who are running.
I can't wait to see how many votes McCain and Obama lose to the others (probably not many, but still...)
Been wondering how you've been doing lately, btw. It sounds like you've had it way rough lately.

Good question - do you get to do the absentee ballot this year, Steve?

By default, everyone in Arizona has the option to get a mail-in ballot. I opted for that service. However, the US Consulate will provide you with a ballot as well.

No waiting line? Nice.
MeanBlackDude 3 years ago
My polling place has always been pretty quiet too. I wonder if this time around I'll actually have to contend with a crowd - as much as it would suck to wait in line, I'd be ecstatic to see that.
OhCurt 3 years ago
i completely agree.
imajeanyus 3 years ago
I'll not complain...at least for the next 4 years. I'll keep my lips zipped.

You not sharing your POV would be a shame, IMO.
Thanks for attaching your video as a response here, btw. I realize I won't change your mind but I'm glad you connected that with this one all the same.
:-)
OhCurt 3 years ago
Normally I'd agree.
However, neither presidential candidate impresses me this year, and I don't expect to be living in this state long enough to enjoy, or suffer from, the results of any local elections. I'm not even registered to vote...one of those things that sorta just slipped my mind when I moved.
But if I were still in California, I would.

OhCurt 3 years ago

ghostofxmaspast 3 years ago
I'm not voting. What is the point anyway? Your vote only matters if it is the majority in your state.
ghostofxmaspast 3 years ago
Like I just told someone else in a reply, don't get me started on the electoral college (500 characters wouldn't cover it anyway). But here's what I'm hoping: that the turnout continues to improve, the discrepancy btwn actual votes and electoral votes continues to be scrutinized, and then technology is used to fix what we have. That's just one of the reasons I fight my own cynicism and turn out for these things.
OhCurt 3 years ago
I totally agree! Just go and do it!!

How hard was that. Easy as pie. Sheesh!!!
longhairred 3 years ago
The process is easy. The emotional baggage that a lot of people carry where this is concerned, however, is pretty intense. I can't blame them for feeling discouraged, either.
But we gotta keep showing up for these things, otherwise the corrupt ones will just continue to walk all over us.
OhCurt 3 years ago
I early voted last Tuesday. Yay!!! :0)
JeepGirl2 3 years ago
I don't think I've seen that movie, but I love that there's at least one out there telling that story in some form. Yeah, the movement had tons of setbacks and lasted more than half a century.
But it succeeded.

One of the best I've written lol.
newbsauce11 3 years ago
Did he at least provide an explanation for why he chose that?
OhCurt 3 years ago
His explanation was that there was no point. He seemed to think that the elections were fixed. One of those conspiracy theory guys. It really bugged me.
newbsauce11 3 years ago
I made a video back in October asking for folks to vote. I sent it to you as a response.. hope thats okay.
Jinxie228 3 years ago
It's more than okay.
Thank you, Martha!!

OhCurt 3 years ago
Why should I vote? 96 percent of "We the People" just got done telling our congress, incuding both frontrunning cadidates that we didn't want the bailout. Yet, they said, yeah, we know, but we're doing it anyway.
That proves our "voice" doesn't count, no matter how loudly we protest.

Go VOTE!!
thizizliz 3 years ago
The office of Pres is important; however, if we are electing the right people at home we are far better represented.
karen32862 3 years ago

I bet the same people who complain would wait however if it was a line for Disney *rolling eyes* 4 8 years we've had tape over our mouths, Time to take it off.
akfhome27 3 years ago
It's sad, of course, but I love your 'tape over our mouths' metaphor.
So true!
OhCurt 3 years ago
I guess I'll get back to you tomorrow morning to let you know if we need to put the tape back over our mouths for another 4 yrs. God I'm on edge! FL has their own ver of amdt 2 { If passed it would allow all domestic rights and marriages to only be allowed by men/wom couples }Looks like their isnt enough supporters to say no to it.I'm so disheartened. So here's to hopping for real change! Otherwise I'll pass the tape around :)
akfhome27 3 years ago
If it's any consolation I'm a little worried at this end too. And not just over that, but over our Prop 4, which would help undo the progress made by Roe v. Wade.
I've got my "I Voted" sticker plastered on my shirt, am feeling very relieved that this part is over, but don't know whether to sit or stand right now.

Did it. And I feel great about voting for the first non white President. It could lead to good and bad things. But I hope for the best just like every other time I have voted.
First time for me was 1975.
ydnarOrandy 3 years ago
Is it really just about complaining?? Aren't there other issues involved?
Richmunnich 3 years ago
What I meant was the people who repeatedly voice their disappointment in how one politician or another has performed, but they never used their opportunity to vote them out when they had it. It's difficult to take those people seriously.
As for other issues involved, you're right. It's not black and white. A lot of people are disheartened by how things have played out.
I firmly believe, however, that giving up on the process is a big mistake.
OhCurt 3 years ago
I'm gonna vote but I'll tell you this...
I WON'T WAIT IN LINE LONGER THAN 30 MINUTES

I used to publicly state, and believe, exactly what you just conveyed. "Used to" being the key words. I understand now, that some choose not to vote as a vote of no confidence, in either candidate, the broken 2 party system, or the fact that a viable 3rd party representative will never be a reality again. Then there is that whole inalienable rights thing. That damn pesky Freedom of Speech.
*poorly feigned sigh*
JustA11en 3 years ago
:-)
Well I think what I failed to convey in this one was that I don't wish to deny freedom of speech. It's just a matter of being able to take people seriously when they complain ad nauseum but never get out there to do anything about it. And there are even other ways to participate in addition to or besides voting, yet certain loud mouths never do that either.
Those folks inspire nothing more than eye rolling from me anymore.
OhCurt 3 years ago
I'm only voting for McCain because I want: The war to continue for another hundred years: Radically conservative Supreme Court appointments: A continued decline in the economy: And Palin to become president when the sick old guy kicks the bucket soon after being elected.
Otherwise, I'd vote for Obama.
